In this collected volume fourteen experts in the fields of Classics and Ancient History study the textual strategies used by Herodotus and Livy when recounting the disastrous battles at Thermopylae and Cannae. Literary, linguistic and historical approaches are used (often in combination) in order to enhance and enrich the interpretation of the accounts, which for obvious reasons confronted the authors with a special challenge. Chapters drawing a comparison with other battle narratives and with other genres help to establish genre-specific elements in ancient historiography, and draw attention to the particular techniques employed by Herodotus and Livy in their war narratives.

La critique générale tend à ignorer la production des membres de l'Oulipo en l'enfermant dans le paradigme des jeux et acrobaties de langage. La critique oulipienne, même si elle a déjà effectué des incursions notoires, reste encore assez embryonnaire. L'Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle, dont les activités ne cessent depuis 1960, l'année de sa fondation, constitue un laboratoire unique d'expérimentation en matière de poésie et de prose. Né du mariage des mathématiques et de la littérature, l'Oulipo s'est tôt saisi des ressources de l'informatique, dans le but de rechercher de nouvelles formes et structures à mettre à la disposition des écrivains. La complexité et le caractère parfois abstrus de ses textes-prototypes font que la critique tend à gloser sur la ou les contraintes qui génèrent le texte, au détriment du produit fini.
