Christian-Muslim Relations, a Bibliographical History 10 (CMR 10), covering the Ottoman and Safavid Empires in the period 1600-1700, is a further volume in a general history of relations between the two faiths from the seventh century to the early 20th century. It comprises a series of introductory essays and also the main body of detailed entries which treat all the works, surviving or lost, that have been recorded. These entries provide biographical details of the authors, descriptions and assessments of the works themselves, and complete accounts of manuscripts, editions, translations and studies. In The Wahhabis seen through European Eyes (1772-1830) Giovanni Bonacina offers an account of the early reactions in Europe to the rise of the Wahhabi movement in Arabia. Commonly pictured nowadays as a form of Muslim fundamentalism, the Wahhabis appeared to many European witnesses as the creators of a deistic revolution with serious political consequences for the Ottoman ancien regime. They were seen either in the light of contemporary events in France, or as Islamic theological reformers in the mould of Calvin, opposing an established church and devotional traditions. These audacious but fascinating attempts to interpret the unknown by way of the better known are illustrated in Bonacina's book.

Decayed gods : origin and development of Georges Dumézil's "idéologie tripartie" /

In 1930 Dumézil wrote an article in which he defended the Indo-European character of the Indian varnas . In 1986 he was completing his final 25 Esquisses , research proposals the aim of which was to allow his model of the 'idéologie tripartie' of Indo-European traditions to be applied to his 'disciples'. According to this model Indo-European traditions were typified by a threefold division into functions of society, the world of the gods, and the heroic traditions. These were the functions of sovereignty, power and 'fertility'. This theoretical model was elaborated by Dumézil in a large number of books and articles. Between 1930 and 1986 he broadened enormously the amount of data on which his model was based. To do so he had regularly to adapt and reformulate his model. This was not without consequences for the material which he had interpreted earlier on. In this study a detailed description is given of this process of reformulation and reinterpretation and the conclusion is that the totality of the various models does not, despite its aesthetic attraction, satisfy the criteria which should be set for scientific models.

In order to further scientific knowledge of human rights, the Council of Europe holds high-level meetings, such as colloquies, round tables and seminars. Every five years an important Colloquy on the European Convention on Human Rights takes place in a town of a member State. The Eighth International Colloquy on the European Convention on Human Rights, organised by the Secretariat General of the Council of Europe in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of Hungary and the Hungarian Institute for Legal and Administrative Sciences, was held in Budapest from 20 to 23 September 1995. This volume contains the Proceedings of the Budapest Colloquy, which covered the following themes: The European Convention on Human Rights and cultural rights 1st session: Cultural rights: universal, indivisible, and legally enforceable rights; 2nd session: Cultural rights and the management of particular situations to ensure democratic security in Europe; The European Convention on Human Rights in the new architecture of Europe 3rd session: Effects on the European Convention on Human Rights of the enlargement of the number of Contracting Parties; 4th session: Implementation of the reform of the European Convention on Human Rights control machinery.
