Clément d'Alexandrie (150-215 Ap. J.-C.) est l'un des penseurs les plus brillants des premiers siècles chrétiens. Son enseignement, tout autant pétri de la Bible que de la pensée grecque, nous révèle la nature des débats aux premières heures de l'expansion du christianisme. Ce livre aborde un sujet peu étudié à ce jour, à savoir sa pensée sur l'Église. C'est pourtant un sujet récurent de ses ouvrages, où il réfléchit longuement sur l'Église à partir de l'être et la mission du Logos divin. L'analyse du discours de Clément sur l'Église permet donc de revisiter les intuitions principales de sa christologie tout en apportant un éclairage sur sa perception de l'identité chrétienne à une époque où celle-ci est encore en construction. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement's discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.

Given the concept of salvation through knowledge in Valentinian Gnosis, which is basically anti-materialist, one would not expect concrete physical rituals to play a large role in its practice. The Nag Hammadi Gospel of Philip is widely recognized as a Valentinian text, yet it contains portions of a treatise on the value of baptism, anointing, and the eucharist. The text, which arguably comes from the end of the second century, presents the first developed theory and justification of these sacraments in Early Christianity. The present study reconstructs this theory from the fragmentary text and considers its consequences for the organization of the community. Thus, the book is also an attempt to address the problem of institutionalization in early Christian communities.

Based on the combination of archaeology, iconography, philology and ethnographical comparisons, the analysis of the particular assets of siege-engines or architectural features are developed, along with the best means employed at that time to overcome them. De Backer proposes more than a simple census of all the means known so far, he also develops and enhances our knowledge of siege-warfare in a pragmatic and efficient manner.

Historical Jesus research, Jewish or Christian, is marked by the search for origins and authenticity. The various Quests for the Historical Jesus contributed to a crisis of identity within Western Christianity. The result was a move "back to the Jewish roots!" For Jewish scholars it was a means to position Jewry within a dominantly Christian culture. As a consequence, Jews now feel more at ease to relate to Jesus as a Jew. For Walter Homolka the Christian challenge now is to formulate a new Christology: between a Christian exclusivism that denies the universality of God, and a pluralism that endangers the specificity of the Christian understanding of God and the uniqueness of religious traditions, including that of Christianity.

Dabei wird zunächst die Grundlegung dieses Verhältnisses in der abendländischen Metaphysik und in der Phänomenologie, insbesondere im philosophischen Denken Henrys, in den Blick genommen. Based on the oeuvre of Michel Henry, the contributions collected in the Festschrift "Immanenz und Einheit" examine the relation between immanence and unity under general systematic and practical aspects. First, the foundation of this relation in occidental metaphysics and in phenomenology, especially in the thinking of Michel Henry, is analysed. Then, the view of Michel Henry is compared with those of Meister Eckhard, Fichte, Christian theology and eastern religions in order to develop the perspectives of this relation for the Philosophy of Religion. Furthermore, the consequences of the relation between immanence and unity for ethics and its existential significance are considered. Thus, the Festschrift offers a significant contribution to the understanding of the relationship between immanence and unity which is especially relevant for the thinking of Michel Henry.

Most of them treat details of the history of the Hellenistic Academy and Cicero. Other papers explore the aftermath of Hellenistic thought in Lucilius, Lucretius, and Seneca, the literary form of Roman philosophical treatises, and Cicero's personal interpretation of Academic scepticism. All contributions are based on close reading of the source material. No attempt is made to harmonize conflicting evidence. Instead, different stages of the school discussions and some gradual changes in philosophical doctrine emerge more clearly. Special attention is paid to the conversion of Greek terms into Latin, in some cases implying unexpected consequences in meaning.

Deux contes montrent que la parole vivante est l'espace où se fonde le principe du père en tant que principe de vie pour le sujet. Dès qu'il y accède, cette parole le délie de la mort, particulièrement celle liée au noeud oedipien (inceste-parricide-infanticide). Enfin, accéder à cette parole n'est pas chose aisée. L'échec vient de l'équivocité de la parole laquelle conduit à la perversion. La réussite repose le plus souvent, non sur l'amour, mais sur le savoir, un savoir incomplet.

The exhibition \'Meisterwerke muhammedanischer Kunst\' that took place in Munich in 1910 marked a turning point in the approach to Islamic Art. The show attempted to break free of Orientalism and exotic fantasies and, in doing so, set a new standard for the reception of Islamic art in Europe. Moreover, naming the Islamic artefacts masterpieces, it layed claim to bestow upon Islamic art "a place equal to that of other cultural periods". This book is the first comprehensive study on this path-breaking exhibition.
