Aëtiana IV : papers of the Melbourne Colloquium on Ancient Doxography /

The articles collected here are based for the most part on papers read at the Colloquium "The Placita of Aëtius: Foundations for the Study of Ancient Philosophy," held in Melbourne in December 2015. The Placita , a first century CE collection of systematically organised tenets in natural philosophy ranging from first principles to human physiology is incompletely extant in several later sources. Its laborious reconstruction and the identity of its author are discussed from various angles. The text of the treatise is further elucidated by a novel statistical exploration of what is extant and what is missing. Its relation to various currents in the history of Greek philosophy and its reliability are also examined in some detail.

Ancient doxography, particularly as distilled in the work on problems of physics by Aëtius, is a vital source for our knowledge of early Greek philosophy up to the first century BCE. But its purpose and method, and also its wider intellectual context, are by no means easy to understand. The present volume contains 19 essays written between 1989 and 2009 in which the authors grapple with various aspects of the doxographical tradition and its main representatives. The essays examine the origins of the doxographical method in the work of Aristotle and Theophrastus and also provide valuable insights into the works of other authors such as Epicurus, Chrysippus, Lucretius, Cicero, Philo of Alexandria and Seneca. The collection can be read as a companion collection to the two earlier volumes of Aëtiana published by the two authors in this series (1997, 2009).

Adab is a concept situated at the heart of Arabic and Islamic civilisation. Adab is etiquette, ethics, and literature. It is also a creative synthesis, a relationship within a configuration. "Lorsque le Directoire décide d'envoyer le général Bonaparte, auréolé de la gloire toute fraîche de la campagne d'Italie, conquérir l'Égypte, ce n'est pas sans arrière-pensée. Vainqueur, il devient plus que jamais le bras armé de la France; vaincu, il est moins dangereux politiquement. Ce calcul, qui se veut doublement gagnant s'avère perdant sur toute la ligne. On ne retient que la bataille des pyramides du haut desquelles "quarante siècles" étaient censés contempler une armée qui ne pouvait pas les voir depuis le champ de bataille et la redécouverte d'un Orient lointain et mystérieux qui n'est pas sans laisser, consciemment ou non, un léger arrière-goût de croisade. Il entreprend un travail de fonds, de façon à doter le pays de structures juridiques, administratives, mais aussi scientifiques directement inspirées du modèle français. Le 26 août 1798, un Institut d'Égypte est créé sur le modèle de l'Institut de France. En quatre sections, l'Institut d'Égypte réunissait les plus brillants membres de la Commission des Sciences et des Arts, les cent cinquante-six savants que le général avait joints à l'expédition, une petite troupe inapte au combat mais aussi précieuse que les ânes, du moins si l'on en croit la légende de la bataille des pyramides!
