Paul's gospel in Romans : a discourse analysis of Rom. 1:16-8:39 /

: This book offers a fresh approach to Paul's gospel. Applying linguistic discourse analysis to Romans 1:16-8:39, it helps the reader to gain a comprehensive understanding of the argumentative structure and contents of the gospel of Paul. As well as revealing the two underlying descriptive frameworks that Paul uses to explain his gospel about God's salvation - the interactive framework between God and humans, and the 'two-realm' framework - this book demonstrates that Paul's gospel consists of one 'peak point' that shows the central role of Jesus, and two 'sub-peaks' elucidating salvation.

Beguiling Guidance : Zechariah Alḍāhirī's Sefer Hamusar, a Hebrew Maqāma from 16th-Century Yemen /

: The only Hebrew picaresque maqāma from Yemen, Sefer hamusar captivates its readers with trickster tales of wandering and adventure while offering moral guidance and a spiritual ascent via kabbalistic study. In Beguiling Guidance , Adena Tanenbaum explores these tensions, along with the literary, social-historical, philosophical, and kabbalistic aspects of Sefer hamusar , and situates the work in its broader 16th-century framework. Applying a fresh reading, she analyzes Alḍāhirī's maqāma as a rich repository of intellectual history; treats his travel narratives as composites of fiction and fact; and uncovers the cultural assumptions and self-definitions underlying his representations of Muslims, which she shows to be far more variegated and nuanced than previously acknowledged. Beguiling Guidance should appeal to readers interested in transregional cultural exchange and the diffusion of texts; pre-modern fiction and travel writing; and Muslim-Jewish power relations in the late medieval/early modern Middle East. It also serves as an introduction to the vibrant culture of a Jewish community that traced its presence in South Arabia back to antiquity.

Relational Iconography, Representational Culture at the Qaraquyunlu and Aqquyunlu Courts (853 / 1449 CE to 907 / 1501 CE) /

: In Relational Iconography: Representational Culture at the Qaraquyunlu and Aqquyunlu Courts (853 / 1449 CE to 907 / 1501 CE) , Georg Leube engages with courtly representation from an iconographical perspective, tracing the intersecting agencies of courtly actors negotiating multiple normativities and traditions. While the courtly culture of the Qaraquyunlu and Aqquyunlu dynasties (15th century C.E.) is commonly interpreted as an intermezzo in Persianate and Islamicate cultural history, it is here framed as an ideal field to explore a relational approach that challenges established dichotomies and ideal types. By reading multiple mediums and discourses into each other, Georg Leube shows how courtly performance is rooted in iconographical repertoires that resonated with different networks and groups inside the 'Turkmen' realms. .

The Intellectual Climate of Cassius Dio : Greek and Roman Pasts /

: Cassius Dio (c. 160-c. 230) is a familiar name to Roman historians, but still an enigmatic one. His text has shaped our understanding of his own period and earlier eras, but basic questions remain about his Greek and Roman cultural identities and his literary and intellectual influences. Contributors to this volume read Dio against different backgrounds including the politics of the Severan court, the cultural milieu of the Second Sophistic and Roman traditions of historiography and political theory. Dio emerges as not just a recounter of events, but a representative of his times in all their complexity.

Early Christianity and classical culture : comparative studies in honor of Abraham J. Malherbe /

: This volume contains 28 essays in honor of Abraham J. Malherbe, whose work has been especially influential in exploring modes of cultural interaction between early Jews and Christians and their Graeco-Roman neighbours. Following an introductory essay on the problems inherent to such comparative studies in the history of New Testament scholarship, the essays are grouped into five topic areas: Graphos - semantics and writing, Ethos - ethics and moral characterization, Logos - rhetoric and literary expression, Ethnos - self-definition and acculturation, and Nomos - law and normative values. Some key examples are studies dealing with The Greek Idea of "Divine Nature" and its relation to the "Divine Man" tradition; Compilation of Letters in Cicero's collection; Radical Altruism in Paul; Greek Ideas of Concord and Cosmic Harmony in 1 Clement; The Rhetorical Use of Friendship Motifs in Galatians in comparison with Second Sophistic Orators; Wills and Testaments in Graeco-Roman perspective.

The Formosan Primary Anthropogenic Myths, Genesis, and the Creation of Man /

: In this book, Valdis Gauss anthologizes the Formosan anthropogenic myths from all of Taiwan's Austronesian tribes. Over 250 origin texts, sourced from dozens of linguistic, anthropological, historical, and mythological corpora as well as other publications have been collated and analysed rendering the present literary survey far more comprehensive than any prior study on this subject. Over 100 Formosan myths, many of which were never previously available in English have been translated here for the first time. In the absence of longstanding traditional orthographical records, the Austronesian tribes that inhabit the island of Taiwan have relied on the transmission of oral literatures for the preservation of historical events since the dawn of time. The earliest historical events that are still recited by tribal elders relate to the origins of the gods and first ancestors of mankind. This anthology continues the tradition of collecting and transcribing these myths for everyone interested in the corpus of literature from Taiwan's aboriginal peoples.

Making Copies in Early Modern Times : Models and Copies in an Interdisciplinary Context /

: This book explores new approaches to the study of the complex relation between models and copies. Excellent studies dedicated to copies continue to be published, focusing mainly on works of art and techniques, but the research should be extended in directions that have remained virtually unexplored until now, considering new perspectives and contexts. This volume intends to push the boundaries of current research on copies, proposing new points of view and considering new relations between models and their reproductions. Contributors include: R. Arnheim, E. Vandeweghe, F. Gallaire, B. Leshem, C. Naya, P. Alvarez, S. Suykens, S. Rose, D. Boerio, M. Rijks, M. Bellavitis, B. Anderson, Guthrie, E. Giffin, and S. Abplanalp.

A Discourse Analysis of First and Second Thessalonians : The Relationship between Two Authentic Pauline Letters /

: Applying discourse analysis within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this study offers a fresh reexamination of the textual and contextual relationship between First and Second Thessalonians. Through register analysis, it uncovers a unified linguistic profile across both letters-marked by pastoral consistency, relational coherence, and structural clarity. Challenging traditional assumptions of textual and situational divergence, it provides a linguistically grounded reassessment of Pauline authorship. With a methodologically rigorous yet accessible approach, this study invites readers in New Testament studies, biblical linguistics, and early Christian discourse to revisit these foundational letters-textually, contextually, and with renewed insight.

Flavius Josephus' Self-Characterisation in First-Century Rome /

: The Jewish War describes the history of the First Jewish Revolt against Rome (66-70 CE). This study deals with one of this work's most intriguing features: why and how Flavius Josephus, its author, describes his own actions in the context of this conflict in such detail. Glas traces the thematic and rhetorical aspects of autobiographical discourse in War and uses contextual evidence to situate Josephus' self-characterisation in a Flavian Roman setting. In doing so, he sheds new light on this Jewish writer's historiographical methods and his deep knowledge and creative use of Graeco-Roman culture.

Further studies in the making of the early Hebrew book /

: Further Studies in the Making of the Early Hebrew Book contains essays on aspects of the early Hebrew book most often treated in a cursory manner if addressed at all. The largest section of the volume is concerned with the makers and places of Hebrew books, mainly addressing book-makers poorly remembered or controversial and print-shops that issued a small number of books in a brief period of time. The section on varia addresses aspects of the book trade such as small books, incomplete books published as a prospectus, competing simultaneous editions, and errors and variations in books. Two smaller sections deal with book arts such as incunabula frames and pressmarks; variations between medieval and current Sephardic Haggadot.

Cornelius Castoriadis and radical democracy /

: Cornelius Castoriadis and the Project of Radical Autonomy analyses the philosophy of Greek-born French philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis. A leading member of the influential revolutionary group, Socialism or Barbarism in France, Castoriadis analysed contemporary political subjectivity and culture in terms of the collective and individual attempt to gain autonomy. His philosophy frames a multi-dimensional analysis of modern capitalist societies, based on a systematic critique of orthodox Marxism, Heideggerian ontology and Lacanian psychology. The present volume consists of two parts. In the first part, his most significant essays written before his departure to France in 1945 are translated and present young Castoriadis' interpretation of Max Weber's theory of bureaucratic societies. The second part consists of a series of essays by various scholars on aspects of Castoriadis' mature philosophy in relation to other thinkers, and against the background of Europe's political and social history.

The Medieval Mediterranean between Islam and Christianity : cross-pollinations in art, architecture, and material culture /

: "This volume offers an exploration of the Christian-Islamic encounter in a pan-Mediterranean context, through an array of new research papers based on micro-historical case studies of the religious arts, architecture, and material culture. The new Mediterraneanism forged during the last decades has opened the door to approaches that reveal Christian-Islamic interchange in its full complexity, as well as diversity. Within this frame, one of the most relevant, yet underexplored lines of investigation is that of the "aesthetic space": the notion that aesthetic pleasure transcends boundaries, paving the way to a cross-religious experience and appreciation. "Indeed, God is beautiful, and He loves beauty", as mentioned in a Hadith narration, a universal cry of visual beauty that resonates with all cultures and civilizations. This concept finds perfect application in the case of textiles, ceramics, metalware, and other artifacts that traveled across the medieval Mediterranean. Commodities such as the balsam oil further expand this shared space, to also encompass the sensory aspect in its broadest sense. What is more, the appropriation of spolia and symbols bring visual appeal through the meaning they produce and convey, opening up the conceptualization of this space even more"--
