Aristotle argued that scientific investigation depends on well-established genera, from which are revealed fundamental properties. However, the core elements of his philosophy are based on non-generic unities. Being is not a genus; it is divided into ten categories or supreme genera. Being serves as the primary concept in metaphysics, also known as first philosophy. Motion, on the other hand, is categorized into four types and is the central concept in physics, or second philosophy. Similarly, the concept of the good can be understood in multiple categories, just like being, and it forms the central idea of practical philosophy. Aristotle must confront the issue of homonymy at the very foundation of his philosophy. The stakes are high, as he believes that it is things, not words, that are homonymous. This study explores the intriguing route Aristotle takes to justify attributing homonymy to things.

This volume takes a new look at one of the greatest works of Hellenistic mathematics, Apollonius of Perga's Conica . It provides a long overdue alternative to H.G. Zeuthen's Die Lehre von den Kegelschnitten im Altertum . The central part of the volume contains a historically sensitive analysis and interpretation of the entire Conica , both from the standpoint of its individual books and of the text as a whole. Particular attention is given to Books V-VII, which have had scant treatment until now. Two chapters in the volume concern histioriographic issues connected with the Conica in paricular and Greek mathematics in general. Although the volume is intended primarily for historians of ancient mathematics, its approach is fresh and engaging enough to be of interest also to historians, philosophers, linguists, and open-minded mathematicians.

Izydora Dąmbska (1904-1982) was a Polish philosopher; a student of Kazimierz Twardowski, and his last assistant. Her output consists of almost 300 publications. The main domains of her research were semiotics, epistemology and broadly understood methodology as well as axiology and history of philosophy. Dąmbska's approach to philosophical problems reflected tendencies that were characteristic of the Lvov-Warsaw School. She applied high methodological standards but has never limited the domain of analyzed problems in advance. The present volume includes twenty-eight translations of her representative papers. As one of her pupils rightly wrote: "Dąmbska's works may help everyone [...] to think clearly. Her attitude of an unshaken philosopher may help anyone to hold oneself straight, and, if necessary, to get up after a fall".

To Paul the traditions from and about Jesus had authority similar to that of the Scriptures: a logion or story served as text for paraphrastic expositions. Such expositions are also seen in John's Gospel. - It is insufficient to discuss 'John and the Synoptics'. A better scope is 'John within early gospel traditions'.- Paul and Philo maintain a cosmic understanding of Jesus and the Jewish people, respectively. Correspondingly, Jesus is seen in cosmological perspective in John's Prologue. Philo illuminates the role of God's logos relative to creation and revelation. - Archaeology testifies to the reliability of John's topographical references. Both John and Philo can combine theological and ideological elaborations with specific geographical references, historical events and religious feasts. The study has brought in material and perspectives which strengthen the view that the Gospel of John was independent of the other three written gospels.

The tractate later received Christian additions. The last of these may refer to the career of Julian the Apostate. This is a fresh approach to the interpretation of this puzzling tractate.

We constantly refer to counterfactual events-things that didn't happen but could have-through conditional, wish, and modal constructions. Yet, despite their ubiquity, we still know surprisingly little about how these constructions have evolved across languages and through history. This book breaks new ground by tracing, for the first time, the development of counterfactual systems across different constructions, texts, linguistic registers, and historical stages. Drawing on extensive corpus data from Indo-European languages and nearly three millennia of Greek, it offers the first unified account of counterfactual and avertive constructions as core expressions of non-realization. In doing so, it also proposes a revised model of the counterfactual life cycle-one that integrates semantic, morphosyntactic, and pragmatic dimensions-providing typologists with a powerful framework for exploring how counterfactual expressions evolve across languages.

Languages do not see barriers, and they adopt certain words while traversing to distant lands. Indian lexicons in English came to prominence, when the Portuguese, Dutch, and other colonial nations before the British Raj learned about specific Indian vocabularies and adopted them into their dictionaries. Many itinerary literature in the form of travelogues, botanical, medical, and miscellaneous works coming from the said countries had left their account and they have written certain terms and terminologies, which did not have an equivalent in European languages. Also, with the establishment of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and the reports, diaries, and accounts written by the British orientalists, government officials, and linguists, many Indian lexicons came into being from their compositions. This eventually led to the formation of Anglo-Indian words. Hobson Jobson is the corruption of the slogan Shia Muslim British-Indian soldiers during the Muharram, which is 'Ya Hasan Ya Hussain!'. This dictionary contains more than a thousand Anglo-Indian terms and was written by Henry Yule and A.C. Burnell, with additions made by William Crooke in 1903.
