This volume provides a review of recent research in Philippi related to archaeology, demography, religion, the New Testament and early Christianity. Careful reading of texts, inscriptions, coins and other archaeological materials allow the reader to examine how religious practice in Philippi changed as the city moved from being a Hellenistic polis to a Roman colony to a center for Christian worship and pilgrimage. The essays raise questions about traditional understandings of material culture in Philippi, and come to conclusions that reflect more complicated and diverse views of the city and its inhabitants.

The aim of this monograph is to understand the extent to which the landscape of Roman Berytus and the Bekaa valley is a product of colonial transformation following the foundation of Colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Berytus in 15 BCE. The book explores the changes observed in the cities of Berytus and Heliopolis, as well as the sites at Deir el-Qalaa, Niha, and Hosn Niha. The work fundamentally challenges the traditional paradigm, where Baalbek-Heliopolis is seen as a religious site dating from as early as the Bronze Age and associated with the worship of a Semitic or Phoenician deity triad and replaces it with a new perspective where religious activity is largely a product of colonial change.

Der vorliegende Band richtet diese Frage an Überlieferungen aus dem Alten und Neuen Testament und ihren Umwelten. Die exegetischen, religionsgeschichtlichen, historischen und archäologischen Beiträge suchen nicht nur politische Handlungsweisen zu rekonstruieren, sondern darüber hinaus deren Konzeption und theoretische Reflexion. Diese Frage versteht sich keineswegs von selbst, sondern impliziert für den hier hauptsächlich in den Blick gefassten Bereich der Levante - anders als für Griechenland, wo das Politische und mithin auch politische Theorie nach herkömmlicher Überzeugung entstanden sind - eine zu bewährende Arbeitshypothese.
