The Practical Imperialist : Letters from a Danish Planter in German East Africa 1888-1906 /

: This book provides a rare opportunity to follow the daily life on and around plantations and towns in the first years of the German colonial presence in East Africa, as seen through the eyes of a Danish master farmer working for the German East Africa Company. There are few memoirs and personal letters from these years, and existent letters are primarily by explorers, colonial officials, missionaries or the occasional settler. Lautherborn's material provides one of the very few entry points into the daily business of colonial expansion and consolidation in the early years of German East Africa as seen through the eyes of a practical man trying to do a job in a complex and changing world.

The modern Assyrians of the Middle East : encounters with Western Christian missions, archaeologists, and colonial powers /

: This is a revised edition of the author's The Nestorians and Their Muslim Neighbors (Princeton University Press, 1961). Early in the nineteenth century, the Aramaic-speaking \'Nestorian\' Christians received special attention when American Protestant missions decided to educate and reform them to help meet the challenge that Islam presented to the growing missionary movements. When archaeologist Layard further publicized the historic minority as \'Assyrians\', the name acquired a new connotation when other forces at work in the region - religious, nationalistic, imperialistic - entangled these modern Assyrians in vagaries and manipulations in which they were outnumbered and outclassed. The study examines Western Christendom's current position on Islam, with emphasis on the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches. The revision draws on a wide variety of sources not used in the original.

English Bazar in Colonial Bengal : An Urban History of Malda (1813-1947) /

: India has a long history of urbanization from the time of the Indus Valley civilization to the modern age, and it bears specific characteristics relating to their historical circumstances. The urban centre that developed in Malda district of West Bengal during the period specified is categorically different from urbanization in the pre-colonial period. The urbanization at Lakhnauti in Bengal is archaeologically not very notable. The second urbanization that started there in the thirteenth century was the beginning of the process of urbanization in Malda and was identical to the features of any Muslim capital centric urban centre. The first British urban establishment that took place in the district during the pre-colonial phase originated with the establishment of the commercial factory of the East-India Company at English Bazar in 1680. However, a new type of urbanization took place after the formation of the Malda district in 1813. The nucleus of the administrative headquarters was located in the pre-colonial English settlement area popularly known as English Bazar. The gradual expansion of the city necessitated by administration and the need to accommodate the influx of migrants over the years from different areas of Bengal, led the district to assume a definite shape after establishment of the English Bazar Municipality in 1869. This book is an important contribution to the literature on the urbanization of colonial India at the micro level. It discusses conceptual as well as theoretical issues relating to urbanization, urban experiences of pre-colonial and colonial India, and the origin and growth of the English Bazar town.

Ancient Greeks west and east /

: This volume deals with the concept of 'West' and 'East', as held by the ancient Greeks. Cultural exchange in Archaic and Classical Greece through the establishment of Hellenic colonies around the ancient world was an important development, and always a two-way process. To achieve a proper understanding of it requires study from every angle. All 24 papers in this volume combine different types of evidence, discussing them from every perspective: they are examined not only from the point of view of the Greeks but from that of the locals. The book gives new data, as well as re-examining existing evidence and reinterpreting old theories. The book is richly illustrated.

Religious dynamics under the impact of imperialism and colonialism : a sourcebook /

: This sourcebook offers rare insights into a formative period in the modern history of religions. Throughout the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, when commercial, political and cultural contacts intensified worldwide, politics and religions became ever more entangled. This volume offers a wide range of translated source texts from all over Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, thereby diminishing the difficulty of having to handle the plurality of involved languages and backgrounds. The ways in which the original authors, some prominent and others little known, thought about their own religion, its place in the world and its relation to other religions, allows for much needed insight into the shared and analogous challenges of an age dominated by imperialism and colonialism.

The British and French Mandates in Comparative Perspectives/Les mandats français et anglais dans une perspective comparative /

: This collection represents the first large scale attempt to discuss the Middle Eastern mandates as a totality. It compares the application and effects of this very specific form of late colonialism from a variety of different disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, architecture, archival conservation, economics, history, law and sociology. It contains analyses at both micro and macro levels, including specific instances of revolt or collaboration, studies of particular individuals, of professional groups and their contributions to "nation-building," comparisons between the various political and cultural policies of the mandatory powers, and the formation and practice of "le savoir colonial" by contemporary ethnographers, officials, physicians and teachers. The volume will be of interest to historians of imperialism and of the twentieth century Middle East.

The Near East under Roman rule : selected papers /

: The studies in this collection deal with a variety of subjects. Their focus is the Roman Empire in the East, the Roman army, Judaea in the Roman period, and Jewish history. Inscriptions are published in them and literary sources discussed. First, Judaea in the period before the arrival of the Romans as well as under Roman rule forms the centre of attention. Here, articles on specific documents are presented and historical problems discussed ranging from the Seleucid period to the Later Roman Empire. The second part of the book contains studies of the wider area and the third part is concerned with the Roman army, its organisation and aims in the Frontier areas. Many of these papers are hard to find and it is particularly valuable to have all of them together and logically arranged in one volume. Moreover extensive discussions of recent publications and newly published material have been added here.

Language Contact, Colonial Administration, and the Construction of Identity in Ancient Israel : Constructing the Context for Contact /

: "In Language Contact, Colonial Administration, and the Construction of Identity in Ancient Israel, Boyd addresses a long-standing critical issue in biblical scholarship: how does the production of the Bible relate to its larger historical, linguistic, and cultural settings in the ancient Near East? Using theoretical advances in the study of language contact, he examines in detail the sociolinguistic landscape during the Assyrian, Babylonian, and Achaemenid periods. Boyd then places the language and literature of Ezekiel and Isaiah in this sociolinguistic landscape. Language Contact, Colonial Administration, and the Construction of Identity in Ancient Israel offers the first book-length incorporation of language contact theory with data from the Bible. As a result, it allows for a reexamination of the nature of contact between biblical authors and a series of Mesopotamian empires beginning with Assyria."--

Should Blood Blend with Milk : A History of Incitement to Vengeance in Arabic Poetry from Jahili Voice to Militant Jihadist Verse /

: In Should Blood Blend with Milk , Dena Fakhro offers an account of Middle Eastern conflicts told from the perspective of Arabic poetry and the blood feud. Far from being confined to antiquity, verse promoting bloody retribution continues to be generated by armed groups, whereas among moderates there are lampoons which instead serve as protest and warning. Traditionally, blood vengeance is a requirement for settling scores and restoring honour to injured parties. By making wide use of poems ranging from pre-Islamic Arabia, the medieval caliphates and the modern map of the Middle East, Fakhro proves these texts belong to an epic continuum, employing recurrent language, while contextualising revenge as an aspect of sectarianism, border conflict between empires, anti-colonial resistance, and militant jihadism.
