The founding of the Progressive Republican Party in November 1924 marked the end of a power struggle within the Turkish nationalist movement. This struggle had been going on ever since the start of that movement in 1919 and had become acute after the establishment of the Turkish Republic in October 1923. The suppression of the party in 1925 marked the beginning of the period of one-party dictatorship which lasted until after the Second World War. This book describes the power struggles within the nationalist movement which gave birth to the party, its history, organization, power base, and ideological significance. A large number of important political documents from the period are presented in translation.

A revised Greek Text (the first in a century) and English translation (the first in any modern language) of the Art of Political Speech by a writer known as the Anonymous Seguerianus (ca. A.D. 200) and the Art of Rhetoric of Apsines of Gadara (ca. A.D. 230), with introduction, notes, and indices. These works provide evidence of how rhetoric was taught in Greek in the early centuries of the Roman Empire and show the continued development of an Aristotelian tradition before acceptance of the reorganization of the subject by Hermogenes. They complement each other in that the Anonymous was especially interested in debates about rhetorical theory, while Apsines' primary interest was in analysis of speeches of Demosthenes and other orators and in teaching declamation.

In the present compilation the text of Chuar Rebellion written by J.C. Price has been reproduced from the West Bengal District Census Handbook, Midnapore (1951) and the accompanying contemporary official documents have been collected from the Midnapore District Collectorate. The volume focuses on the beginning of the tribal-led peasant resistance in South-West Bengal. Though the year A.D. 1799 is marked in the annals of Midnapore as the year of the great Chuar Rebellion but their resistance began much earlier, right since the Company's accession in Bengal. The grievances of the Adivasis coincided with the precarious condition of the Zamindars leading to the spark of a popular revolt which is commonly known as Chuar rebellion. This volume illuminates with much vigour one of the earliest known instances of subaltern struggle in colonial South Asia.
