The Function and Structure of the dm?(y)t “Myth” /
:
The title dm?(y)t refers to one of the dramatis personae in the early funerary cult drama, who helps with the transfiguration of the deceased in terms of the collecting and reassembling of the deceased’s bones or limbs. This term can be used in the singular and the plural and is derived from the root dm? “to collect or gather.” The title dm?(y)t may be translated as “bone or limb collector.” By the Fifth Dynasty there is evidence that the root dm? was directly associated with the reconstruction of Osiris’ body, yet the dm?(y)t is not part of the Osirian cult drama. Her presence may predate the superimposition of the Osirian characters, but there appears to be a clear association between the function of the dm?(y)t and the function of the goddess Isis in the Osirian myth. Did the canonization of this myth lead to Isis taking over the dm?(y)t’s function in the transfiguration of the deceased? Following the myth-ritual school, is the Osirian myth attempting to explain the role of the dm?(y)t in the funerary service by superimposing Isis? In light of more recent research on myth structure and development, following the work of Dr. Katja Goebs, this work attempts to contextualize the use of the dm?(y)t-character in ritual texts and illustrations. In an effort to pinpoint the mythical relationship and the structural relationship of the actors/objects, I endeavor to understand what makes the use of the dm?(y)t “myth” efficacious for the user.

Kaṭṭaikūttu : The Flexibility of a South Indian Theatre Tradition /

This book gives an insight into Kaṭṭaikkūttu, a living Tamil theatre tradition. Taking the perspective of performers as a starting point, it analyses how this theatre tradition has been able to adjust itself to changing conditions and challenges because of its inherent flexibility. The phenomenon of flexibility pervades both the formation and internal arrangements of theatre companies and the actual performances themselves. The first part of the book focuses on Kaṭṭaikkūttu in its historical and social context. It traces the theatre's disengagement from its organic embedding in the social and ritual village organization and its transition towards a more autonomous and more professional regional theatre form during the last fifty to hundred years. This transformation was accompanied by processes of professionalization and commercialization, which had their impact on the practitioners and the performances. The second part of the book provides a detailed analysis of the working of oral Kaṭṭaikkūttu texts in performance. Through a flexible handling of the oral - verbal and musical - material within the boundaries of a relatively fixed framework underlying these texts, Kaṭṭaikkūttu performers try to fulfill to the best of their abilities the demands of sponsors, audiences and occasions.

This urban and architectural study of Aleppo, a center of early modern global trade, draws upon archival and narrative texts, architectural evidence, and contemporary theoretical discussions of the relation between imperial ideology, urban patterns and rituals, and architectural form. The first two centuries of Ottoman rule fostered tremendous urban development and reorientation through judiciously sited acts of patronage. Monumental structures endowed by Ottoman officials both introduced a new imperial architecture from Istanbul and incorporated formal elements from the local urban visual language. In Ethics in the Gospel of John Sookgoo Shin seeks to challenge the dominant scholarly view of John's ethics as an ineffective and unhelpful companion for moral formation. In order to demonstrate the relevance of John's ethics, Shin argues that the development of discipleship in John's Gospel should be understood as moral progress, which was a well-known moral concept in the ancient Mediterranean world.
