Childhood in ancient Egypt /

: "There could be no society, no family, and no social recognition without children. The way in which children were perceived, integrated, and raised within the family and the community established the very foundations of Egyptian society. Childhood in Ancient Egypt is the most comprehensive attempt yet published to reconstruct the everyday life of children from the Predynastic period to the end of the New Kingdom. Drawing on a vast wealth of textual, iconographic, and archaeological sources stretching over a period of 3,500 years, Amandine Marshall pieces together the portrait of a society in which children were ever-present in a multiplicity of situations. The ancient sources are primarily the expressions of male adults, who were little inclined to take an interest in the condition of the child, and the feelings of young Egyptians and all that touches on their emotional state can never be deduced from the sources. Nevertheless, by cross-referencing and comparing thousands of documents, Marshall has been able to explore how ancient Egyptians perceived children and childhood, and whether children had a particular status in the eyes of the law, society, and the Egyptian state. She examines the maintenance of the child and the care expended on its being, and discusses the kinds of clothing, jewelry, and hairstyles children wore, the activities that punctuated their daily lives, the kinds of games and toys they enjoyed, and what means were employed to protect them from illness, evil spirits, or ghosts. Accessibly written and copiously illustrated with 160 drawings and photographs, this book sheds unprecedented light upon the experience of childhood in ancient Egypt and represents a major contribution to the growing field of ancient-world childhood studies."--

The representations of women in the Middle Kingdom tombs of officials : studies in iconography /

: In The Representations of Women in the Middle Kingdom Tombs of Officials Ľubica Hudáková offers an in-depth analysis of female iconography in the decorative programme of Middle Kingdom non-royal tombs, highlighting changes and innovations in comparison to the Old Kingdom. Previously considered too uniform, the study represents the first systematic investigation of two-dimensional images of women and reveals their variability in space and time. Hudáková examines the roles appointed to women by analyzing how they are depicted in a variety of contexts. Taking into account their postures, gestures, garments, hairstyles, size of the body, age as well as attributes and tools used by them, along with the scene orientation, she traces diachronic and diatopic developments and regional traditions in the Middle Kingdom tomb decoration.

The Iconography of Family Members in Egypt's Elite Tombs of the Old Kingdom /

: In The Iconography of Family Members in Egypt's Elite Tombs of the Old Kingdom, , Jing Wen offers a comprehensive survey of how ancient Egyptians portrayed their family members in the reliefs of an elite tomb. Through the analysis of the depiction of family members, this book investigates familial relations, the funerary cult of the dead, ancestor worship, and relevant texts. It provides a new hypothesis and perspective that would update our understanding of the Egyptian funerary practice and familial ideology. The scenes of family members are not a record of family history but language games of the tomb owner that convey specific meaning to those who enter the chapel despite time and space.

Pêche et chasse au lac Manzala : delta du Nil /

: "Lake Manzala and its many islands has long been known as Lake Tennis. The largest of the four Egyptian lakes which border the Nile delta has had a long and complex history. Always a source of wealth for the fishermen and hunters, its surface has been shrinking all through the 20th century while the pollution affecting it has grown irreversibly. Little by little the migrating birds have changed their routes and the fish supplies have diminished. Nessim Henein describes in faithful detail the techniques that he carefully observed during the long hours that he spent in the fishermen's company. The last chapter is given to recipes on how to prepare fish and game birds. Throughout the pages of this book, the author also gives an ethnographical picture of the daily life of the people of Manzala, with their difficulties, their hopes and their constant struggle to survive."--Back cover. : viii, 486 pages : illustrations, maps ; 28 cm. : 9782724705140 : 0259-3823 ;
