Die Eroberung von Damaskus : Quellenkritische Untersuchung zur Historiographie in klassisch-islamischer Zeit /

The conquest of Damascus is one of the main events of the Islamic conquests in bilād al-Shām. Consequently, it appears with approximately 1000 narratives in the Islamic literature. This book shows the dependencies of these narratives. It therefore exemplifies the historiography from 700-1300 CE using one single event. Using the method of isnād-cum-matn-analysis the oldest forms of Islamic historiography are reconstructed. Among them are not only the version by Ibn Ishāq, but also the narratives in the futūh-work ascribed to al-Waqidī and in al-Azdī's Futūh al-Sham. Finally, the course of the events is described on the basis of the oldest reconstructed versions. Die Eroberung von Damaskus gehört zu den bedeutendsten Ereignissen der futūh im historischen Syrien. Folglich ist sie mit circa 1000 Einzelüberlieferungen ein häufig vorkommendes Element in der islamischen Literatur. Die Zusammenhänge und Abhängigkeiten der Überlieferungen zu analysieren, ist das Hauptanliegen dieser Studie. So können Aussagen über die Historiography von 700-1300 n. Chr. an Hand eines historischen Beispiels getroffen werden. Mit Hilfe der isnād-cum-matn-Analyse gelingt es zudem die frühesten Formen muslimischer Geschichtsschreibung zu rekonstruieren. Zu diesen gehören neben der Version Ibn Ishāqs auch die Erzählungen, die sich in dem Futūḥ-Werk, das al-Waqidī zugeschrieben wird, und dem Futūḥ al-Šhām al-Azdīs finden. Auf Grundlage dieser ältesten rekonstruierten Fassungen zeichnet diese Untersuchung abschließend die Eroberung von Damaskus nach.

In Das theologische Profil des Julian von Toledo analysiert Stefan Pabst das Leben und Wirken des westgotischen Bischofs Julian von Toledo (ca. 642-690). Im Anschluss an eine Hinführung zum historischem Umfeld und zur Biographie des Julian werden sämtliche erhaltene Schriften untersucht. Dies betrifft sowohl die die nicht-theologischen als auch die theologischen Werke. Im Zentrum der Analyse steht einerseits die Frage nach der Originalität des Autors. Julian zitiert nämlich intensiv aus den Schriften der Kirchenväter, insbesondere des Augustinus. Andererseits werden die Zielgruppe und die Intention jeder einzelnen Schrift eingehend betrachtet. Abschließend wird so ein theologisches Profil des Julian von Toledo entwickelt, das ihn als einen patristischen, einen pädagogisch-pastoralen und damit als einen spezifisch westgotischen Theologen präsentiert. In Das theologische Profil des Julian von Toledo Stefan Pabst analyses the life and work of the Visigothic bishop Julian of Toledo (ca. 642-690). After a presentation of Julian's historical environment and biography, all preserved writings are analysed in detail. This includes his non-theological as well as his theological works. While, on the one hand, the analysis focusses on the question of the author's originality, for Julian quotes extensively from the works of the Church Fathers, Augustine in particular, on the other hand, the author's addressed audience and the intention of each individual writing are considered in detail as well. As conclusion, Julian's profile as Theologian is presented: He is a patristic and pedagogical-pastoral theologian and thus a specifically Visigothic theologian.

This volume discusses the authenticity of the seven letters, handed down under the name of Ignatius of Antioch, and explores the wider theological context at the time of their composition. The author first examines the chronological foundations of current scholarly consensus, which on the whole favours an early second-century date for the composition of these letters, during the reign of the emperor Trajan (98-117). On the basis of his findings the author next addresses the question raised by the title of the volume: do some of the polemic passages in these letters specifically attack Valentinian gnosis? After a detailed discussion of chapters 16-20 of the Letter to the Ephesians it is shown that the Ignatian Star Hymn (Eph. 19) should be seen as a parody of Valentinian myth. The volume concludes with a study of the Regula fidei (Eph. 18,2).

The work concerns 15 epigraphic and/or verse inscriptions, handed down from the writers of the 5th and 4th centuries BC. These inscriptions were probably commissioned from Simonides of Keos. The commentaries on the individual verse inscriptions form the centre of the investigation. Each commentary is introduced by a text for the sake of orientation concerning the epigram in question, by a brief apparatus criticus, and by a review of the relevant secondary literature. The historic, literary, and, when possible, architectural contexts are taken into consideration in the interpretations. The first part of the book includes studies on the archaic and classical epigram in the public space, on the sources and transmissions of the oldest Simonidean verse inscriptions, and on the status quaestionis regarding the authenticity of the claims of authorship. The concluding observations deal with epigrammatic competitions and with the historical reception of the verse inscriptions in the public space. Die Arbeit widmet sich 15 epigraphisch und/oder bei Autoren des 5. und 4. Jhs. volume Chr. überlieferten Versinschriften, die vermutlich bei Simonides von Keos in Auftrag gegeben wurden. Den Kern der Untersuchung bilden die Kommentare zu einzelnen Versinschriften. Ein zur Orientierung gedachter Text des jeweiligen Epigramms, ein knapper kritischer Apparat und ein Überblick über die Sekundärliteratur leiten die einzelnen Kommentare ein. In der Deutung werden die historischen, literarischen und, wenn möglich, architektonischen Kontexte berücksichtigt. Der erste Teil des Buches umfasst Studien zum archaischen und klassischen Epigramm im öffentlichen Raum, zu den Quellen und zur Überlieferung der ältesten simonideischen Versinschriften und zum status quaestionis bezüglich der Zuschreibungen. Der abschließende Ausblick gilt epigrammatischen Wettbewerben und der historischen Rezeption der Versinschriften im öffentlichen Raum.

Buch 1 und 2 bilden innerhalb der disparaten Sammlung der antiken Sibyllinischen Orakel ein zusammenhängendes Werk: eine historische Apokalypse, die den Bogen von der Schöpfung bis in die eschatologische Goldene Zeit spannt und dabei biblische und heidnische Mythologie harmonisiert. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert das in seiner jetzigen Gestalt klar christliche Doppelbuch. Sie rekonstruiert daraus eine vorchristliche Grundschrift, die als literarisches Zeugnis der jüdisch-heidnischen Symbiose im kaiserzeitlichen Kleinasien gelesen werden kann. In seiner bearbeiteten Form ist das Doppelbuch die vermutlich älteste Sibyllenschrift aus christlicher Hand. Die Studie bietet einen detaillierten Kommentar zu der gesamten Schrift. Dabei untersucht sie auch das umfangreiche Pseudo-Phokylides-Zitat in Buch 2 sowie die Beziehungen der eschatologischen Abschnitte zur Petrusapokalypse. Within the disparate collection of ancient Sibylline Oracles book 1 and 2 form a historical apocalypse reaching from the creation to the eschatological Golden Age. It is unique in integrating biblical and classical mythology. Although Christian in its present form, its origins have been debated for a long time. This study examines its different parts and tries to reconstruct a pre-Christian document. It interprets the original work as a literary evidence of the Jewish-pagan symbiosis in Asia Minor in the imperial period. Its adaption is probably the earliest Sibylline writing produced by Christians. The study provides a line-by-line commentary. It contains a close examination of the tradition of Pseudo-Phocylides included in the Christian document as well as a comparison with the Apocalypse of Peter.

This volume deals with the correspondence between Augustine and Jerome, discussing the way the letters were handed down to posterity, as well as their contents. In the first part it is shown that Jerome and Augustine both published a collection of the correspondence. In addition a list of manuscripts is given. The second part deals with the conflict between Augustine and Jerome. Not only their discussion whether the Hebrew Bible or the Septuagint should be considered canonically authoritative for the Church, but also their argument on the right exegesis of the quarrel between Peter and Paul in Antioch, whether Christians should observe the Jewish Ceremonial Laws (Gal. 2,11-14). The book is of particular interest for scholars in Patristic and Jewish Studies, giving a fresh approach to this important correspondence.

Demokrit, lachender Philosoph und sanguinischer Melancholiker : eine pseudohippokratische Geschichte /

The theme of the book is the Hellenistic epistolary novel which describes a fictional meeting between Democritus and Hippocrates. The author traces the later history of this story as part of the legend of the laughing philosopher on the one hand and of the history of melancholy on the other and demonstrates the interdependence of all three traditions in text editions, translations, paraphrases, commentaries, verse and painting from ancient times through to the Renaissance. He shows how the Stoic-Cynical tradition of 'Philosophus ridens' and the medical concept of 'Typus melancholicus sanguinicus' come to amalgamate into the early modern Humanist literary and iconographical tradition of 'Democritus ridens melancholicus'. In so doing the author also shows the importance of this tradition to the subsequent interpretation of the epistolary novel and its influence on modern research into the Hippocratic corpus and melancholy. The work links important themes in the fields of ancient philosophy, ancient medicine, art history and Renaissance studies and will offer thought-provoking material to many of those working in these areas.

Durch die jahrzehntelange Editionsarbeit der Fichte-Gesamtausgabe der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften ist nun das gesamte Oeuvre Fichtes der Forschung zugänglich. Von besonderem Interesse sind dabei die Jahre 1810-1814, die nicht zuletzt aufgrund der lückenhaften Quellenlage bisher kaum als eigenständige Periode untersucht worden sind. Dabei verdienen sie größte Beachtung, nicht bloß weil sie Fichtes letzte Untersuchungen zur Transzendentalphilosophie beinhalten, sondern weil Fichte hier erstmals wieder seit Jena dauerhaft akademisch tätig ist - als Professor an der neu gegründeten Berliner Universität. Dieser Umstand führt zu einer ungeheuren Fülle an ausgearbeiteten Texten, die das hochspekulative Anliegen neu auf eine akademische Hörerschaft ausrichten und uns heute ermöglichen, intensiv und umfassend den letzten Stand Fichtescher Transzendentalphilosophie aus erster Hand zu studieren. Bewegt von der Lebensfrage Fichtes nach dem Wesen endlicher Freiheit, will die vorliegende Untersuchung erstmalig eine diesbezügliche Gesamtauswertung dieser Spättexte liefern. There can be no doubt that there is a link between early Christian statements on human dignity and the corresponding modern concept, as it appears ever more frequently in current bioethical debates. This study attempts to throw light on the surprisingly complex process of the emergence of such a Christian concept of human dignity in antiquity and portrays it as a process governed by contradictions and antagonisms: between biblical and platonic anthropology; between a platonic and a stoic perception of humanity; between gnostic and antignostic cosmology; between biblically based criticism of human culture on the one hand and heilsgeschichtlichem cultural optimism on the other hand; between Greek and Roman thinking. This history of the idea of the "dignity of man" is being recounted taking into consideration the complex matrix of Christian theory and practice (including issues such as worship, contraception and abortion), piety and theological reflection, ethics, liturgy and theological as well as cutural anthropology. *** Bei dieser Studie handelt es sich um den Versuch einer zusammenfassenden Darstellung der christlich-antiken Auseinandersetzung mit der Würde des menschlichen Lebens Diese wird nicht nur gegenwärtig etwa in der Bioethik wieder kontrovers diskutiert, sondern ist auch in der Antike ein Feld philosophischer und theologischer Überlegungen gewesen. Volp fragt, inwieweit sich in den Schriften der antiken christlichen Denker die Vorstellung einer mit einer besonderen Würde ausgestatteten gemein-menschlichen Natur findet, die Menschen von Tieren und von belebter und unbelebter Materie unterscheidet, und wie diese Natur gefaßt und begründet wird. Ausgehend von der These, daß diese Überlegungen nicht nur Auswirkungen auf die ethische und religiöse Praxis der Alten Kirche hatten, sondern umgekehrt auch entscheidend von ihr geprägt wurden, konzentriert sich die Arbeit nicht nur auf die theoretischen Äußerungen der Kirchenväter, sondern bezieht ethische Konkretionen (Schwangerschaftsabbruch, Umgang mit Menschen mit Behinderungen, Krieg) und den christlichen Kult mit in die Untersuchung ein. Zum Vorschein kommt ein überraschend komplexes Bild einer alles andere als selbstverständlichen geistesgeschichtlichen Entwicklung, deren Folgen bis in die heutige Zeit nachwirken.

Egyptian historiography is determined by the fact that transmission of the historical record is left to chance. Ludwig Morenz therefore develops a method of "fragmentarily thick description," borrowing terminology from anthropologist Clifford Geertz, as a way of addressing the holes left in the record while still arriving at as complete a picture of the third century BCE Gebelein society as possible. From this localized perspective, a new understanding of the region's culture, including conceptualizations of the landscape, the socio-economic situation, the mentality of the people and their methods of discourse, arises. Even with this new method the private realities of the men, women, and children can remain in shadows. However, it is possible, as a result of the descriptive model, to better understand the sources at hand and to draw connections among intellectual-, economic-, and social-historical frameworks. Utilizing Morenz's method widens our understanding of the traditionally undervalued "dark" times of the third century BCE Gebelein region. Upon closer examination of the socio-economic and mentalities history, the transformation of Egyptian society emerges as colorful and contradictory.

The author presents a comprehensive historical examination of the early Christian graeco-latin translations of the biblical 'apocrypha' and 'pseudepigrapha'. The analysis of the translation techniques employed yields a distinction between 'literal' and 'adaptive' translations on the hand and translations associated with the textual tradition of the bible and those not associated with it. Whereas the former can be distinguished by the respective handling of textual macrostructures, the latter 'biblical' translations were subject to constant revision according to their original and thus always display a number of different versions. Als erster Schritt hin zu einer Geschichte der christlichen Übersetzungsliteratur werden hier die lateinischen Übersetzungen griechisch erhaltener "Apokryphen" und "Pseudepigraphen" erstmals umfassend historisch einzuordnen versucht und einer übersetzungstechnischen Analyse unterzogen. Obwohl keine dieser Übersetzungen wirklich sklavisch wörtlich vorgeht, ergibt sich dabei doch ein relativ deutlicher Unterschied zwischen ,wörtlichen' und ,literarischen' Übersetzungen einerseits und mit der biblischen Überlieferung assoziierten und nicht damit assoziierten andererseits: Lassen sich die ersteren beiden primär anhand ihres Umgangs mit textlichen Makrostrukturen auseinanderhalten, zeichnet sich die biblische Überlieferung durch ständig neue Rückbindung einer Übersetzung an ihr Original in Form unterschiedlicher Revisionen aus.
