The essays presented variously explore and review interdisciplinary links, innovations and developments between anthropology and biblical studies in reference to interpretation of both the OT and NT and pseudepigraphal works. Explored are methodological issues, the use of anthropological concepts in biblical studies (identity; purity boundaries; virtuoso religion; spiritual experience; sacred space) and more 'field orientated' work of bible translators in different cultures.

Quand les désirs et les peurs liés à la machine, abandonnés, silencieux, cachés derrière le voile du progrès, émergent, ils créent une sorte de phénoménologie de la machine, qui pendant de nombreuses décennies constitue un point de référence pour des activités littéraires et artistiques. La machine s'y trouve, pour ainsi dire, intériorisée ; inextricablement liée aux affects et aux désirs, elle devient ce que je me propose d'appeler machine intime. Ce processus est étudié ici à travers les œuvres de Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes, et quelques autres, dont Roussel, Artaud, Didi-Huberman, ainsi que dans la littérature érotique contemporaine. The spectacular return of the repressed is one of the determinants of the particular rhythm of modernity. The machine also plays its part. When the desires and fears linked to the machine, abandoned, silent, hidden behind the veil of progress, emerge, they create a kind of phenomenology of the machine, which for many decades constituted a point of reference for literary and artistic activities. The machine is, so to speak, interiorised; inextricably linked to affects and desires, it becomes what I propose to call an intimate machine. This process is explored here through the works of Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes and others, including Roussel, Artaud and Didi-Huberman, as well as in contemporary erotic literature.

Khurshīd (Alif Ëditions, 1996). It deals with mystic comments on Qur'anic verses and prophetic translations inspired by Ibn 'Arabi's work. This volume also contains long comments on the Futuḥāt . Chapter 248 deals with the synthesis of Shaykh al-Akbar's view on the world, which helps to get an idea of this rather well organised vision, which is however often hard to understand.

New Testament Manuscripts: Their Texts and Their World comprises twelve essays dealing with manuscripts of the New Testament and/or what we can learn from them today. Starting from different angles the contributors - distinguished scholars of international reputation - focus on the fascinating and thrilling stories manuscripts tell, for instance about the times they were produced in or the people who handled them. The multitude of manuscripts used for establishing the critical text of the New Testament is often only perceived as abbreviations in form of single letters or numerals, and today's biblical scholars may hardly ever take notice of the specific features of an original manuscript, above all those not mentioned in a critical edition. Therefore, three sets of contributions deals with the conditions under which manuscripts from the early days of Christianity were produced and transmitted, specific individual manuscripts, and then special features observed in and with the help of various manuscripts. In a final essay the usual method of how to organize and categorize New Testament manuscripts is challenged and an alternative method proposed. This volume is the part of lectures delivered in 1943 under the Sir William Meyer Lectureship Series (1942-1943) at Madras. This edition is part of three-volume series, dealing with Champa (Annam), Suvarnadvipa (Malaysia), and two volumes dedicated to Cambodian studies. This book traces the history of Kambuja Desa or ancient Cambodia. It covers the influence and expansion of Indian influence, both soft and hard power, in the colonies in the Far East. The most important source that is touched by the author is the ancient inscriptions found in Cambodia. The themes that are covered in this book are the emergence of Indian expansionism into the Cambodian land. The establishment of the Funan Kingdom is also discussed, which was the first Hinduized kingdom in the Indo-China region during the first century ad. Besides that, the expansion of Angkor and a profile of the Kambuja Kingdom are also discussed in greater detail.

William J. Murnane (1945-2000) dedicated his life to the epigraphic recording and historical interpretation of the monuments of pharaonic Egypt. In defense of the Bible : a critical edition and an introduction to al-Biqāʻī's Bible treatise /

The history of the Islamic interaction with the Scriptures of Judaism and Christianity has been studied extensively in academia. The prevailing view is that Muslims had hardly any religious appreciation to the Bible and when used by Muslims it was mainly in apologetic or polemical settings. The document presented here squarely contradicts such a view. The treatise argues for the permissiblity of using the Bible by Muslims for religious purposes. Al-Biqāʿī, the author of this treatise, wrote a huge Qurʾān commentary that used the Hebrew Bible and the Gospels to interpret parts of the Qurʾān. Al-Sakhāwī, a bitter enemy, opposed such a practice. The document preserves for us a fundamental argument inside Islam about the value of the Scriptures of other religions.

The six manuscripts from Ḥirbet Qumran (2Q15, 4Q99, 4Q100, 4Q101, 4Q157, 11Q10) are the oldest textual witnesses of the Hebrew Book of Job, which received its final redaction during the 3rd century BCE. But their different characteristics and fragmentary condition make it hard to draw a picture on what these textual witnesses actually testify to. This study combines Text - and Literarkritik while considering their individual features. The results unveil a history of reception of the image of Job, which goes hand in hand with an ongoing production and reworking of the text. In dieser Studie werden die sechs fragmentarischen Hiobmanuskripte aus Ḥirbet Qumran in text- und literarkritischen Einzelanalysen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse geben Einblick in die früheste Rezeptionsgeschichte und zeigen, welche Themen nach dem Abschluss der Großkomposition im 3. Jh. v. Persons and Immortality /

The religious belief in personal immortality depends on the evidence for the existence of God, an immaterial soul or mind, and human nature. We also need to support the view that God will always want to maintain relationships with us in the afterlife. So, immortality is a hard sell. The suffering of innocent victims suggests that the existence of a loving God is not self-evident. Furthermore, the soul's separation from the body at death raises the troublesome problem of personal identity. How can that be me in the afterlife without my body? The tradition from Plato to Descartes plants the seed of personal immortality in our rational nature. But the deconstruction of human nature suggests that our species is not special. Yet, the belief in immortality lingers. The first step in the reconstruction of personal immortality is found in systems theory, or belief that the whole individuates the part. This view suggests that we are the outcome of relationships rather than eternal natures entering into relationships. We are the product of relationships taking place at three basic levels. 1. In psyche where being human is the result of a tendency toward good and evil. 2. As social entities where the existence of other human beings individuates us. 3. In being's unconcealment where the intelligibility of things provides a foundation for epistemic life. Heidegger's view of the nothing or horizon surrounding being allows us to identify God as creator entering into personal relationships with us - a view supported by contemporary science. That will be me in the afterlife, if the relationships that individuate me in my pre-mortem state continue into my post-mortem existence. The reversal in being's unconcealment suggests that human death continues the cycle of personal existence.

Until recently the Philippines were hardly known in the Netherlands. In academic circles the focus was on Indonesia, and publications on the Philippine part of the Malay archipelago tended to be inspired by matters of economy and state in the former Netherlands East Indies. The 1970s and 1980s showed a substantial broadening of scope and increase in research as well as popular interest in the Philippines, as is evidenced by the large majority of the 349 titles mentioned and annotated in this publication. Many early publications contain interesting information and views as well, however. Pre-war authors who are mainly known for their work on Indonesia, such as Valentijn, Van Hoëvell, Kern, Abendanon, E.F.E. Douwes Dekker, Van Vollenhoven, Van Mook, and Holleman, at one or more stages of their careers also devoted attention to the Philippines. The primary aim of this bibliography is to offer the international and Filipino scholarly public access to articles and books written by Dutch authors on the history, sociology, anthropology and to a lesser extent the geography, languages, economy, and culture of the Philippines. About two hundred of them appeared in the Dutch language. The bibliography proper is preceded by an introduction on the history of relation between the Philippines and the Netherlands and the Netherlands Indies and on shifts in the subjects of Dutch scholarly research as well as popular interest. Access to the titles is facilitated by a geographical and a subject index.
