Nearly all of the previous scholarship on Turkey and U.S. relations cover the Cold War period as well as current affairs with regard to security, strategy, and defense. Hence, the literature abounds with military orientation. This edited volume builds on a historical perspective and focuses on foreign relations, diplomacy, actors, mutual perceptions and reciprocity in diplomatic relations within the framework of the world conjuncture in the 1920s and 1930s. Relations with the U.S.A. have served as a balance in Turkey's Euro-Atlantic policy long before NATO was established. Likewise, re-building relations with the Republic of Turkey served U.S. interests in opening to the Near East and thus breaking away from its much lauded isolationist policy between the two world wars. Thus, the picture that emerges here is just as much a history of U.S. diplomacy as it is of Turkey.

Arabic Historical Literature from Ghadāmis and Mali : a Documents from the 18th to 20th Century /

In this work translations of four texts are provided from Ghadāmis and from Mali. The first is a biography of the Ghadāmisī scholar ʿAbdallāh b. Abī Bakr al-Ghadāmisī (1626-1719 AD), written by the eighteenth-century author Ibn Muhalhil al-Ghadāmisī. A second text is "The History of al-Sūq", concerning al-Sūq, the historic town of Tādmakka and the original home of the Kel-Essouk Tuareg. The third text is "The Precious Jewel in the Saharan histories of the 'People of the Veil'" by Muḥammad Tawjaw al-Sūqī al-Thānī, a contemporary Tuareg author. It pertains to the Kel-Essouk and their historical ties with the Maghreb and West Africa. The final text is a description of the Tuareg from the book "Ghadāmis, its features, its images and its sights" by Bashīr Qāsim Yūshaʿ, published in Arabic in 2001 AD.

Grounds of Pragmatic Realism argues that Hegel's philosophy from the 1807 Phenomenology of Spirit through his last Berlin lectures on philosophical psychology demonstates how Kant's critique of rational judgment across his Critical corpus can be disentangled from Kant's failed Transcendental Idealism and developed into a cogent, pragmatic realism, within which the social and historical aspects of rational inquiry and justification are shown to justify realism about the objects of empirical knowledge. Hegel's demonstration reveals how deeply contemporary epistemology remains beholden to pre-Critical options, none of which are adequate to the natural sciences, nor to commonsense. Hegel recognised and justified (independently) Kant's semantics of singular cognitive reference to particulars within space and time. Hegel's analysis of mutual recognition develops Kant's insights into the self-critical and inter-subjective aspects of rational judgment and justification, to show that none of us can be properly rational judges, nor can we properly justify our judgments rationally, without constructive self-criticism and without acknowledging and benefitting from constructive critical assessment by others.

The prestige of the pagan prophet Balaam in Judaism, early Christianity and Islam /

This volume deals with the pagan prophet Balaam who figures in the book of Numbers. By the very nature of his stature as a non-Israelite, pagan prophet, the figure of Balaam raises important questions with regard to the nature of prophecy and the relation between the Israelite God and the pagan nations. The conflicting stories and potent oracles of Balaam in Numbers 22-24 and other parts of the Jewish Scriptures prompted extensive reflection on this ambiguous figure. Thus the leading perspective developed in this volume is the often simultaneous praise and criticism of Balaam as a prestigious pagan prophet throughout ancient Judaism, early Christianity and the early Koranic commentaries. The papers are clustered in four sections which deal with (1) Balaam in the Old Testament and the Ancient Near East, and comparable figures in Ancient Greece; (2) Balaam in Ancient Judaism; (3) Balaam in the New Testament andamp; Early Christianity; and (4) Balaam in the Koran and early Koranic commentaries. The reception of this enigmatic figure can be characterized as the simultaneous praise and criticism of a pagan prophet. The book is particularly useful as it also contains Émile Puech's newly reconstructed text, translation and commentary of the first combination of the Deir 'Alla inscriptions which contain an excerpt of the book of the historical Balaam. Authority and Control in the Countryside looks at the economic, religious, political and cultural instruments that local and regional powers in the late antique to early medieval Mediterranean and Near East used to manage their rural hinterlands. Measures of direct control - land ownership, judicial systems, garrisons and fortifications, religious and administrative appointments, taxes and regulation - and indirect control - monuments and landmarks, cultural styles and artistic models, intellectual and religious influence, and economic and bureaucratic standard-setting - are examined to reconstruct the various means by which authority was asserted over the countryside. Members of the Center have long since received the announcement of the Annual Meeting to be held in Baltimore on Saturday, November 19, 1966. It is hoped that as many as possible will arrange to be present.
The Walters Art Gallery at Center and Clark Streets, which has generously offered to act as host to the Members of the Center, will open its doors at nine in the morning to give visitors a chance to see the Egyptian and Islamic collections before the sessions of papers open at ten o’clock. The morning will be devoted to the reading of papers in various fields of Egyptian studies. In the afternoon there will be a general session, which will include illustrated reports by Professor Kurt Weitzmann and Professor George Forsyth of the Sinai expedition, by Professor Donald Hanson, Field Director in Charge of the Mendes excavation, by Mr. Nicholas Millet, who has directed the dig at Gebel Adda, and by Dr. James Harris, who has worked on the skeletal material from that site in connection with a study of Nubian craniofacial variation covering the period from 200 A.D. to the present.
Between the two sessions, the Walters Gallery has kindly invited members to a buffet luncheon in the Museum.
