The wisdom of the wise : the presence and function of Scripture within 1 Cor. 1:18-3:23 /

Paul's Jewish background and his use of Scripture have been enduring interest within New Testament scholarship. This study contributes to this discussion by examing the presence and function of Scripture in I Cor. 1:18-3:23. The author examines the precence and function of Scripture in the form of six citations, two allusions, and seven echoes within I Cor. 1:19-3:23. From the examination of the function of these texts, this work concludes that Paul's use of Scripture agrees with its original context and stands in line with a majority of early Jewish tradition. Moreover, this study suggests that Pavi's use of Scripture also helps to chart a way through a difficult section of his writing.

This catalogue raisonné describes the lamps and statuettes in terracotta of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, to which are added two lamps made of bronze. The collection, small but eclectic, has mostly been assembled in recent years and represents a wide variety of types in these two categories. After an introduction discussing the techniques involved in the production of these objects, the catalogue proper presents 44 lamps, 21 figurines and a single arula with full illustration. This catalogue makes the collection available to a wide readership: students, curators, archaeologists, art historians, collectors and everybody with serious interest in the material culture of the ancient world. This is the second volume of a series intended to make public the different parts of the museum's collection of Mediterranean antiquities. This book brings together studies on the most common designations for God in the New Testament, considering their use in ancient Jewish tradition as well as in Greek religion and Roman imperial cult. The introducing chapter on "the Father" is followed by studies on "the Lord" and different designations expressing sovereignty (pantokrator, basileus, despotes, dynastes et cetera), on "the Creator", "the living God" and "the life giving God" as well as on the genuine Christian designation "God, who has risen Jesus from the dead". The two final chapters are on "the one and only God" and on "the highest God". This compendium is not only a reference work full of interesting philological and religio-historical material, but also lays the foundation for future studies on the way in which the different New Testament- and other early Christian texts express their views on God. Das Werk enthält einen Sprachatlas des Zazaki, einer nordwestiranischen Sprache. Die Arbeit dokumentiert die sprachgeographischen Verhältnisse einer bislang wenig erforschten Region. Grundlage bilden eigene Erhebungen mit einem Fragebuch in 65 Orten über das ganze Gebiet verteilt. Dieses Fragebuch orientiert sich an den vorwiegend bäuerlichen Verhältnissen einer Kultur, die bald verschwunden sein wird. Das Zazaki wird nach dem Vorbild von Sprachatlanten europäischer Sprachen flächendeckend dokumentiert und in 280 Karten dargestellt. Die fassen 850 Einzelkarten zusammen. Die Arbeit besteht aus zwei Teilen: einem Theorieteil mit Einleitung und Kartenkommentaren sowie einem Kartenteil. Die ersten beiden Bände bieten einen Einblick in das Material. Es handelt sich um die erste systematische Grundlagenforschung zur Sprachgeographie des Zazaki. Die Arbeit setzt neue Maßstäbe in der Iranistik. Die ersten beiden Bände behandeln die Phonologie. Weitere sechs Bände werden folgen. This work presents a linguistic atlas of Zazaki, a northwestern Iranian language. It documents the linguistic geography of a region that has so far been little studied. The research is based on original fieldwork conducted with a questionnaire in 65 locations across the entire area. This questionnaire is oriented towards the predominantly rural conditions of a culture that is on the verge of disappearing. Zazaki is comprehensively documented following the model of linguistic atlases of European languages and is presented in 280 maps, which summarize 850 individual maps. The work is divided into two parts: a theoretical section with an introduction and map commentaries, and a map section. The first two volumes provide insight into the material. This is the first systematic foundational research on the linguistic geography of Zazaki. The study sets new standards in Iranian studies. The first two volumes focus on phonology. Six additional volumes will follow.

Khurshīd (Alif Ëditions, 1996). It deals with mystic comments on Qur'anic verses and prophetic translations inspired by Ibn 'Arabi's work. This volume also contains long comments on the Futuḥāt . Chapter 248 deals with the synthesis of Shaykh al-Akbar's view on the world, which helps to get an idea of this rather well organised vision, which is however often hard to understand.

"In the cemetery of the family of King Pepy I of the 6th Dynasty (c. 2330-2280), the French-Swiss archaelogical Mission of Saqqâra (MafS) has uncovered eight pyramidal complexes of queens from the end of the Old Kingdom. This publication presents a study and a catalog of some of the material delivered by these tombs, including stone vessels - usually fragmentary and sometimes inscribed, such as that of the queen mother Ankhnespepy II, series of models - dummy vases with symbolic function, containers for food offerings, as well as other items of funeral equipment. The stones encountered are mainly calcite (or travertine, or Egyptian alabaster), gneiss, greywacke, limestone. A wide variety of shapes appears, including large inscribed jars, refined cups, shapes well attested in the 6th dynasty and vases much older than the 6th dynasty. The models reveal a permanence of the shapes compared to those of the previous periods, and it is in the material of the queens of Pepy I that the cases of food offerings of real size, some in calcite, appear for the first time in a royal equipment"--Page [4] of cover.

Postkolonialismus bezeichnet nicht nur die historische Epoche nach dem Ende der Kolonialzeit, sondern auch ein theoretisches Konzept zur Analyse von Herrschaftsverhältnissen. In der deutschsprachigen Theologie wurde dieses Konzept bisher wenig beachtet. Im zweisprachigen Sammelband Postkolonialismus, Theologie und die Konstruktion des Anderen erkunden Vertreter aller theologischen Disziplinen einschließlich der Religionswissenschaft die heuristischen Möglichkeiten, die der Postkolonialismus für ihr Fach bietet. Es geht dabei insbesondere um die Frage, wie "der Andere" als Gegenüber eines "Wir" konstruiert wird. Gerade in Zeiten globaler Migration und erstarkenden Rechtsextremismus muss Theologie sprachfähig bleiben, um den drängenden Fragen der Gegenwart Antwortangebote bieten zu können. Postcolonialism refers not only to the historical epoch after the end of the colonial era, but also to a theoretical concept for the analysis of power relations. In German-speaking theology, this concept has so far received little attention. In the bilingual volume Postcolonialism, theology and the construction of the other , scholars of all theological disciplines, including religious studies, explore the heuristic possibilities that postcolonialism provides for their subject. In particular, the question is how "the other" is constructed as the counterpart of a "we". Ever since the Middle Ages, theology has held that the Spirit is given through rites celebrated once for all : Baptism, Confirmation, Order. The Church Fathers did not see these rites as transmitting the Spirit and the effects of the Spirit. For them, reception of the Spirit depended on a divine initiative that was direct, free and sovereign. This study is an important contribution to the renewal of pneumatology, pastoral practice and ecumenical relations.

Al-Ḥasan ar-Raṣṣāṣ (d. 1188 C.E.) was one of the most prominent representatives of the emerging reception of Basran Muʿtazilism in 12th century Yemen. He composed highly sophisticated works on ontology, causality and the specific theory of attributes that has become known as the theory of "states" ( aḥwāl ). He is therefore a rare case of a Muʿtazilī thinker who left a comprehensive and systematised account of his natural philosophy. Jan Thiele's study makes extensive use of hitherto unexplored manuscripts, thereby providing new insight into a largely unknown chapter of Zaydī and Muslim doctrinal history. Focusing on the later Muʿtazila, this book conveys a nuanced understanding of diachronic developments in the school's teachings in order to refine a rather static perception that prevails in modern scholarship. Al-Ḥasan ar-Raṣṣāṣ (st. 1188) war einer der einflussreichsten Vertreter der im 12. Jahrhundert einsetzenden Rezeption der Basraer Muʿtazila im Jemen. The investigation of the Roman villa and its economic structures in the western provinces of the Roman Empire has clearly shown that rural settlement developed at different paces and intensities that largely depended on the specific region in which a villa landscape was intended and created. The progress of Romanisation was strongly linked to the existence of pre- Roman infrastructure in a given region. This existing infrastructure was at first acquired and successively intensified by the Romans. In its sum, the Roman villa economy was a complex and dynamic system that in its configuration vastly differed, according to the specific province. Still, the system essentially served clear functional purposes such as self-subsistence and, ideally, surplus production for the supply of the Roman military in newly conquered provinces.

In this book the author attempts to unravel the original narratives which underlie the biblical Book of Esther. She reconstructs the contents of three non-Jewish narratives: A wedding story, in which the foreign beauty (Esther) takes the place of the disobedient queen, and two court narratives, telling the story of the rivalry between two courtiers at the Persian court. In exilic and postexilic times these basic narratives were merged into one topical and literarily well developed narrative, which expressed the problems connected with Jewish life in the diaspora. The author shows that this text has been redactionally revised once more, in an attempt to adjust Palestinian Judaism to the Jewish communities that flourished in the diaspora. This redaction bears the hallmarks of Judaism's clash with Hellenised political forces; Purim emerges as a succesful defense.
