This two-volume work is a comprehensive collection of the pictorial sources for sport in Pharaonic Egypt. Adopting a broad definition of sport, its scope embraces relevant cultic scenes as well as archery, charioteering and horsemanship, hunting, wrestling, open-air games and board games, acrobatics, dancing and water sports. Over 2,000 documents are given detailed descriptions, with systematic annotations relating to the place, date and content of the documents, as well as the most important secondary literature. The hieroglyphic captions are given in transcription and translation. A representative selection of the pictorial documents, accounting for approximately half of the total material, is presented in the illustrated volume. Accompanying maps classify the material by subject area with indications of their topographical distribution and chronological proximity. The publication of this corpus of materials makes available for the first time the complete pictorial tradition of a great, ancient sporting culture, the intention being to stimulate and intensify research in these fields by the provision of the basic materials.

This book examines the seemingly universal notion of a grammatical cosmos. Individual essays discuss how many of the great civilizations provide cognitive maps that emerge from a metaphysical linguistics in which sounds, syllables and other signs form the constructive elements of reality. The monograph is the first special study and a complete catalogue of the ancient Egyptian shabti statuettes in the collection of the Odesa Archaeological Museum of the NAS of Ukraine. This group of monuments makes more than a sixth of the total number of Egyptian artifacts in the museum. Shabtis of the Odesa collection date from the 17th Dynasty to the Late Period and are represented by the objects of stone, wood, faience, and clay. Part of the shabtis has preserved inscriptions with the names and titles of their owners, and the text of the Spell 6 of the Book of the Dead is also written on seven shabtis. The monograph includes museum data, parameters, description, photographs, hieroglyphic transcription, transliteration, and annotated translation of the inscriptions available on the objects.

This book publishes a previously unknown collection of hieratic ostraca from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The texts include a broad range of genres, including wisdom literature, religious hymns, magical texts, medical recipes, private letters, administrative notes, scribal exercises ( Kemit ), and copies of tomb inscriptions. Each ostracon is presented with photographs, facsimile drawings and hieroglyphic transcriptions, as well as translations and brief philological commentaries. Many of the texts can be linked to the village of Deir el-Medina on internal evidence, and the book offers new data to scholars working with material from this famous site.

Qubbet el-Hawa, the Rock Tomb of Ishemai /

Tomb no. 98 of Ishemai, the sealer of the king of Lower Egypt, and other usufructuaries located in Qubbet el-Hawa and brought to light by Holled Smith at the end of the nineteenth century, was mentioned in excavation reports by Wilbour, Budge, and Bouriant. Edel, on the contrary, provided a complete analysis, published in 2008, of the tomb. Our work involved the analyzing and proposing a new transliteration and translation of the written texts in Tomb 98 and to explain why they differ from those of Edel. Here follows a transliteration and translation that is faithful to the hieroglyphs in their original state, and respects the dividing lines of the registers.The hieroglyphic text of the third register in the smaller square on the south wall is open to several alternative transliterations and translations, as noted in the comments. With their research, the authors do not intend to challenge Edel’s valuable work so much as enrich it and pay due respect for the eminent Egyptologist. This respect extends to the ancient owner and the eminent Egyptologists who first shed light on these sacred, eternal houses.
