The spirit is moving : new pathways in pneumatology : studies presented to Professor Cornelis van der Kooi on the occasion of his retirement /

: The work of the Spirit of God is a vibrant and much discussed topic in many contemporary Christian communities worldwide. Apparently, the Spirit is moving. Theological reflection on this phenomenon has even given rise to what is often called a 'pneumatological renaissance'. This volume not only takes stock of these remarkable developments, but also probes some of their hidden aspects and highlights avenues for future exploration. It contains a wide-ranging but coherent assortment of essays, covering the five relations of the Holy Ghost distinguished already in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed: how does the Spirit of God relate to the Bible, to the Christ, to the human person, to the church and to the world? These essays are written as a tribute to the many inspiring theological contributions of prof. Cornelis van der Kooi on the occasion of his retirement as Professor of Systematic Theology at the Faculty of Religion and Theology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where he taught from 1992 until 2018. Contributors are: Henk A. Bakker, Abraham van de Beek, Erik A. de Boer, Carl J. Bosma, Gijsbert van den Brink, Martien E. Brinkman, Gerard C. den Hertog, Arnold Huijgen, Gerrit C. van de Kamp, Miranda Klaver, Akke van der Kooi, Margriet van der Kooi-Dijkstra, Bruce L. McCormack, Richard J. Community building in the Shepherd of Hermas : a critical study of some key aspects /

: In Community Building in the Shepherd of Hermas , Mark Grundeken investigates key aspects of Christian community life as reflected upon in the early Christian writing the Shepherd of Hermas (2nd century C.E.). Grundeken's thematic study deals with various topics: the community's identity, including its (alleged) 'Jewish Christianness', (lack of) resurrection belief, sectarian tendencies and its relation to the authorities and to the emperor cult; social features, encompassing gender roles and charity; and rituals such as baptism, metanoia , Eucharistic meals, the Sunday collection, dancing (and singing), the 'holy kiss' and reading of Scripture. The many fruitful entries prove Hermas to be one of the main texts for studying the development of community building in the early church.

1 Clement as an Argumentative Text /

: This volume explores the significance of 1 Clement as an argumentative text - a text that substantiates and offers reasons for a specific course of action which readers of the work should take. The contributions to this volume analyze the various argumentative strategies the author of 1 Clement employs in service of the letter's overall aims. Some essays focus on the cultural knowledge underlying the argumentation, while others on the function and use of Scripture. Several essays offer insights from other disciplines - theories of argumentation, metaphor, and (literary and cultural) space, as well as historical anthropology - to facilitate the analysis of 1 Clement's argument. The final two essays investigate the way the argumentative structure of 1 Clement was interpreted and used in two very different contexts of reception.
