Do All Roads Lead to Jerusalem? : The Making of Indian Religion /

: Do All Roads Lead to Jerusalem? traces the history of western encounters with other cultures on two occasions - the 'pagans' of Greece and Rome and the 'heathens' in India. The West has produced many descriptions of other cultures. A close examination of these descriptions reveals that they tell us more about western culture than about the cultures the West has attempted to describe. This overarching theme is developed by examining one element in western culture, viz. religion. This book argues that religion is not a cultural universal and the belief that all cultures have religion is an assumption on the part of all scholars of religion. The reason for this is that western culture has been shaped by religion so that members of this culture are conceptually compelled to describe other cultures from within the framework of religion. From Biblical scholarship to the Enlightenment, from the Reformation to the Romantics, from believers to atheists, the cognitive scheme is the same - one that has been set in place by the experiential framework of Christianity. Is it any wonder that members of such a culture saw religion wherever they went? By means of methodical arguments and lucid explanations this book demonstrates that religion is not a cultural universal and explains why it is believed to be so. Scholars in the field of religious and cultural studies will find this work illuminating, original, and deeply compelling.

The quest for a common humanity human dignity and otherness in the religious traditions of the Mediterranean /

: The worldview that all human beings belong to one big family has, in the history of religions, never been taken for granted. Moreover, human rights are a modern notion that should not be projected back onto the sacred texts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. However, from the Hellenistic period onwards one encounters the idea of human duties towards not only parents, neighbours and fellow citizens but to all human beings. This volume explores the development of this idea from Antiquity to the present time focussing on the \'other\' as \'neighbour, enemy, and infidel\', on the interpretation of the Biblical story of Abraham´s sacrifice and on ancient and modern ethical and legal implications of the concept of human dignity.

Enforcing International Judgments Domestically : The Case of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights /

: This book broaches a hitherto unexplored subject. It is a systematic overview of the domestic implementation or enforcement of Inter-American Court of Human Rights Judgments across all the countries that accept its jurisdiction. This book urges (and allows) us to move beyond the discourse of "influence" of international courts, a discourse that, while helpful in some respects, also has limited usefulness for the victims of human rights violations in judgments. Comprehensive and theoretically sophisticated, this book sheds new light into how human rights law, international courts, and even international law more broadly can in fact be transformative on the ground.

Religion as a Human Capacity, A Festschrift in Honor of E. Thomas Lawson.

: Prepared in honor of E. Thomas Lawson, the essays in Religion as a Human Capacity represent diverse points of view in the study of religion today. Part I, "Theoretical Studies," offers a broad range of cognitivist theoretical explorations, while Part II, "Studies in Religious Behavior," presents cutting-edge applications of cognitive and other contemporary theories to religious data. This volume celebrates Lawson's critical contributions to cognitive studies of religion and the degree to which his ultimate goal of scholarship as a search for truth is matched by those who have been his colleagues and been influenced by him. Religion as a Human Capacity will be of interest to all those concerned with theory and method in the academic study of religion

Towards a revival of analytical philosophy of history : around Paul A. Roth's vision of historical sciences /

: Towards a Revival of Analytical Philosophy of History: Around Paul A. Roth's Vision of Historical Sciences presents the state of the art in the philosophy of history. The purpose of this book is to discuss the revival of analytical philosophy of history proposed by Paul A. Roth, a world-known analytical philosopher of the social sciences and the humanities. The first four papers outline the reasons for the decline of philosophy of history, its present phase of development, and its possible future. The other authors discuss important questions of this field of research including: the ontological status of the past, the epistemological assumptions of historical research, the explanatory dimensions of the narrative. In the last group of papers, the authors apply some of Roth's theoretical ideas within their own fields of research. Contributors are: Krzysztof Brzechczyn, Nancy D. Campbell, Serge Grigoriev, Géza Kállay, Piotr Kowalewski, Jouni-Matti Kuukkanen, Chris Lorenz, Herman Paul, Dawid Rogacz, Paul A. Roth, Laura Stark, Stephen Turner, Rafał Paweł Wierzchosławski, and Eugen Zeleňák.

Dissent with modification : human origins, palaeolithic archaeology and evolutionary anthropology in Britain 1859-1901 /

: The author's original aim in writing this work was to chronicle the story of a very specific debate in human evolutionary studies that took place between the late 1880s and the 1930s - the 'eolith' debate that had to do with small, natural stones whose shape and edges suggested to our earliest ancestors their use as tools. These were the most primitive of tools, thought to date to the very beginning of human cultural evolution, and therefore suited to our very earliest ancestors. The more the author researched this topic the more he realised that its explanation was rooted in a number of research questions which today are considered separate subjects, and, gradually, a book that was to be about a forgotten Palaeolithic debate became a book that was just as much about 'Morlocks', stone tools, racial difference, and the Anthropological Society of London.

Religion and State in Israel : Past and Future Challenges /

: In this book, Prof. Gideon Sapir concisely reviews the history of the relationship between religion and state in Israel. He discusses, among other things, the rise and fall of the famous "status quo" in this field, and examines key issues from social, political, and legal perspectives. Sapir points out that the map of challenges in the field of religion-state relations has changed its face over the past two decades and argues that the main challenge in Israel in this field today is finding a way to integrate the ultra-Orthodox public into the country's various circles of life.

Hidden intercourse : eros and sexuality in the history of Western esotericism /

: From rumours about gnostic orgies in antiquity to the explicit erotic symbolism of alchemical texts, from the subtly coded eroticism of medieval kabbalah to the sexual magic practiced by contemporary occultists and countercultural translations of Asian Tantra, the history of Western esotericism is rich in references to the domains of eros and sexuality. This volume, which brings together an impressive array of top-level specialists, is the first to analyze the eroticism of the esoteric without sensationalism or cheap generalizations, but on the basis of expert scholarship and attention to textual and historical detail. While there are few other domains where the imagination may so easily run wild, the various contributions seek to distinguish fact from fiction--only to find that historical realities are sometimes even stranger than the fantasies. In doing so, they reveal the outlines of a largely unknown history spanning more than twenty centuries.

Ethics of Alaska Travel Writing since 1959 : An Ecocritical Study /

: This book digs into environmental themes in Alaska travel writing since U.S. statehood in 1959, drawing on the works of six authors including Barry Lopez, Jonathan Raban, Tom Lowenstein and others. Each work, though disparate in style, advocates for the empowerment of the Alaska Native people by connecting not only with diverse perspectives but with the lived realities in the geographical spaces that have formed them. In analyzing how these authors have succeeded in depicting the realities of alterities, and where they have perhaps fallen short by more recent standards, we may begin to carve out a system of ethics. This is important as fresh waves of travel writers search for their own place in the environmental conversations surrounding the ever-evolving, 21st century Arctic and its place on the front lines of a changing climate.

A Meaningful Life amidst a Pluralism of Cultures and Values : John Lachs's Stoic Pragmatism as a Philosophical and Cultural Project /

: There is a growing concern about living a meaningful life among those living in different contexts of cultural diversity, be it the American melting pot, the union of European nations, the multiculturally globalized, the multiformity of tribalism of various stripes, and the fashionable cyber bubbles of opinion and commentary that drive the outlooks of millions of uninformed consumers. This book argues for a wisdom that incorporates a reference for both knowledge and self-knowledge, as well as life experience and cultural traditions that have stood the test of time, all contributing to a framework in which we can navigate our lives.

Divining Disaster. Signs of Catastrophe in Ancient Greek Culture /

: In a world riddled with earthquakes and plagued by epidemics, how did the ancient Greeks cope with, and make sense of, disaster? As our present-day environment is perceived to be increasingly perilous, this book includes the ancient Greek world in the longue durée of disaster discourse. Drawing on anthropological disaster studies, ecocriticism, and cognitive studies, this study considers disaster as a semiotic phenomenon marked by uncertainty. Divining disaster, then, functions as a hermeneutic form of disaster management that alleviates uncertainty and assigns agency, not only in religious practices such as oracle consultation but also in historical and mythological narratives.

Philosophical Approaches to Politics and Ethics : Reflecting on Chinese and Western Traditions /

: In Philosophical Approaches to Politics and Ethics , Yang Guorong investigates influential political and ethical topics in Chinese and Western philosophies. This is the first and only English-language translation of the text, originally authored by one of the most influential living philosophers in China. Yang looks general issues such as moral behaviour, humanism, wisdom, or "how to do philosophy," as well as at broad topics from various discourses, such as the relationship between rights and duties, or humaneness and propriety, and more concentrated discussions, such as the Gettier Problem or Zhang Zai's thought. Throughout, Yang draws on resources from Chinese and Western traditions to develop post-comparative philosophical reflections on these issues-in this way Yang engages in what he calls "world philosophy."

Collecting the North /

: Collecting the North examines natural and human-made objects from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, exploring their relationship to the Nordic countries and the European Arctic. Through in-depth analyses, the contributors analyse how these objects inform narratives, imaginings and interpretations of the North across time. This volume argues that objects, collections and collecting practices have shaped political and cultural knowledge of the North in multiple ways, and continue to do so. It provides novel insights into the significance of objects in understanding the North, utilising innovative methodological and theoretical approaches from both the humanities and the natural sciences.

Epistemology and the social /

: Epistemology had to come to terms with "the social" on two different occasions. The first was represented by the dispute about the epistemological status of the "social" sciences, and in this case the already well established epistemology of the natural sciences seemed to have the right to dictate the conditions for a discipline to be a science. But the social sciences could successfully vindicate the legitimacy of their specific criteria for scientificity. More recently, the impact of social factors on the construction of our knowledge (including scientific knowledge) has reversed, in a certain sense, the old position and promoted social inquiry to the role of a criterion for evaluating the purport of cognitive (including scientific) statements. But this has undermined the traditional characteristics of objectivity and rigor that seem constitutive of science. Moreover, in order to establish the real extent to which social conditionings have an impact on scientific knowledge one must credit sociology with a sound ground of reliability, and this is not possible without a preliminary "epistemological" assessment. These are some of the topics discussed in this book, both theoretically and with reference to concrete cases.

Values of literature /

: Why we read literature and why we should read literature are age-old questions that have, in recent years, gained unprecedented scope and intensity, against the backdrop of what has been perceived as a world-wide crisis in the humanities. While scholars frequently discuss different types of value separately, in this volume values of literature are approached in the plural: we argue that the ethical, aesthetic, cognitive, affective, social, historical, and existential values of literature should be explored in connection with each other. The three parts of the book explore the relationship between ethics and aesthetics; the cognitive, affective, and social values of literature; and the construction and questioning of literary values in society. Throughout the book, we discuss the different things literature can do - ranging from affirmation of social dogmas to its capacities for self-questioning and challenging of moral certainties - through the dynamic interplay of its ethical and aesthetic, cognitive and affective aspects. Literature not only reflects and draws on the values of the historical world from which it stems; it also actively addresses, challenges, and transforms those values and explores new ways to understand value. Through these complementary processes, literature engages in its own distinctively literary forms of value inquiry.

The Horizons of Medieval French and Occitan : New Approaches to Manuscripts and Texts /

: This volume celebrates Simon Gaunt's scholarship by exploring the current boundaries and future directions of medieval French and Occitan literary criticism. The essays address questions of vital importance to these disciplines, including: What are the literary cultures and identities associated with supralocal vernacular languages? How do medieval manuscripts construct authorship, gendered identity, and voice in ways that range across genres and expressive registers? How do such codices mediate sensory experience and connect the textual, the visual, and the aural? How do French and Occitan texts negotiate the agencies of human and nonhuman bodies, and theorize emotions, sacrifice, and affect? Contributors are William Burgwinkle, Philippe Frieden, Jane Gilbert, Miranda Griffin, Alice Hazard, Thomas Hinton, Melek Karataş, Sarah Kay, Matthew Siôn Lampitt, Catherine Léglu, Peggy McCracken, Robert Mills, David Murray, Linda Paterson, Karen Pratt, Henry Ravenhall, and Simone Ventura.

Critiques : In Defence of Development /

: Critiques presented here in defence of development range across a number of issues, all of which are central to discussions about the desirability or undesirability of this historical process. These include one particular aspect - labour market competition - of the debate about racism, why the reproduction of this ideology is more acute at some historical conjunctures but not others, the same question that can also be asked of the industrial reserve. Equally contentious is the current dominance of populist and postmodern interpretations of rural development, in the misleading guise of new paradigms, the object of which is to exorcise two ghosts: not just development itself, but also Marxist theory about development.
