This sourcebook serves both as an introduction and a wide-ranging reference work for human attitudes to nonhuman animals in Latin Europe during the Middle Ages. Under twelve headings, it includes numerous translated passages from Latin and vernacular texts that reflect human conceptions and uses of other animals during the period 300-1520. Theologians, philosophers, encyclopaedists, bestiarists, hagiographers, chroniclers, huntsmen and writers of agricultural manuals, cookbooks and plague treatises all had something to say about the place of nonhuman animals in their world and their interaction with humans, or simply recorded incidentally what they did in their writings. All are represented here.

The second volume of Osmund Bopearachchi has articles and monographs on Central Asian and Indian art, South Indian and Sri Lankan art and finally maritime trade in the Indian Ocean. While documenting thousands of coins in the Pakistani markets from 1992 onwards, Bopearachchi realised that one has to go beyond the traditional approach of simply cataloguing coins, and as a result he has made an attempt to link numismatics with sculptural and pictorial iconography. His studies on Utpalavarnā, the courtesan who later became a bhiksunī (Buddhist nun) and on the earliest iconography of Hindu gods like Śiva, Brahmā, Vi]s]nu and Varāha have revolutionised our knowledge of these domains. His writings giving the results of the archaeological excavations and explorations carried out by the Department of Archaeology and the French Archaeological Mission in Sri Lanka along the estuaries and rivers provide substantial evidence to indicate that in ancient times large ships could cast anchor in the sea close to river mouths and commodities were taken to inland markets using the rivers and waterways. His work also shows how the movements caused by these human activities have amalgamated local traditions with foreign identities and created new forms of art and belief. His research on sculptures imported to the island from Amarāvatī-Nāgārjunakonda deals with the inspiration of these schools of art over the early forms of Buddhist sculpture in Sri Lanka. The different architectural aspects of the royal palace complex of Sigiriya, built by King Kassapa (477-95 CE) clearly demonstrate that various external ideas and concepts were used to convert this huge lofty rock into a more elaborate harmonious whole, in another words, a paradise or an Alakmanda.

The Partition of India in 1947 was a horrendous human tragedy on a gargantuan scale not seen before or since. The communal violence of serious magnitude was rearing its ugly head and creating havoc in various parts of the country like in Calcutta, Noakhali, Tippera and Bihar at least a year before the departure of the British. Unprecedented communal riots in Rawalpindi, Multan, Lahore, Amritsar and Gurgaon in the undivided Punjab, or Haripur in NWFP caused deep wounds on the collective psyche of both Hindus and Muslims and led to an all-out bloodletting following their departure. What should have been a moment of crowning triumph was marred by unimaginable violence, bloodshed and the largest migration and dislocation in human history. This book is an outcome of the author's six years of research and describes this inhuman fratricidal war whose severe aftershocks are felt even to this day. This third volume in a series devoted to the excavations of the Louvre Museum in Saqqara studies the tombs of the Old Kingdom discovered under the direction of Christiane Ziegler. Around the mastaba of Akhethetep, now kept in the Louvre and published in volume I, unfolds a necropolis hitherto unknown with the exception of the small decorated chapel E17 excavated by Mariette. It is a series of stone and brick mastabas whose excavation has revealed the topography and the history of this northern zone of the Unas causeway at the time of the pyramids. The sector has delivered burials as well as numerous objects from the same period: fragments of bas-reliefs, stelae, offering tables, items of funerary furniture, ceramics. The scientific presentation of the results is accompanied by a series of multidisciplinary studies on geophysical prospecting, hieratic inscriptions and graffiti, human remains, ceramics, mud bricks and their modules, preventive conservation and restoration. The carbon 14 analysis carried out on the samples taken during the excavations provide details on the chronology of the Old Kingdom.
