Hidden intercourse : eros and sexuality in the history of Western esotericism /
:
From rumours about gnostic orgies in antiquity to the explicit erotic symbolism of alchemical texts, from the subtly coded eroticism of medieval kabbalah to the sexual magic practiced by contemporary occultists and countercultural translations of Asian Tantra, the history of Western esotericism is rich in references to the domains of eros and sexuality. This volume, which brings together an impressive array of top-level specialists, is the first to analyze the eroticism of the esoteric without sensationalism or cheap generalizations, but on the basis of expert scholarship and attention to textual and historical detail. While there are few other domains where the imagination may so easily run wild, the various contributions seek to distinguish fact from fiction--only to find that historical realities are sometimes even stranger than the fantasies. In doing so, they reveal the outlines of a largely unknown history spanning more than twenty centuries.

Secrecy and Concealment : Studies in the History of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Religions /
:
This volume deals with secrecy and concealment in the history of mediterranean religions as pattern of social interaction. Secrecy is a powerful means in establishing identity and interaction as G. Simmel has demonstrated. Using his approach the scholars of this volume describe and explain the practical meaning of concealment in two different religious systems: in Egyptian and Greek polytheism and in Jewish, Christian, Gnostic and Shi'i monotheisms. This point of view reveals that all these religions shaped social norms concerning public and private aspects of the human self.

Philosophy of Humour : New Perspectives /
:
This volume aims to reignite interest in a sorely neglected field within philosophy: the philosophy of humour. Indeed, although humour, jokes and laughter make up a quintessentially human domain of extreme universal importance, it has not received the sustained and involved attention and investigation that it merits. This volume draws on theories both distant and more nearby in order to contemporize the discussion into the 21st century, with each of the ten contributions demonstrating just how many perspectives and conversations are to be had, both on theoretical and concrete levels, now and going forward.

The Scholarly Journal in the GDR : Politicizing the Zeitschrift für Anglistik und Amerikanistik (1953-1990) /
:
This volume goes beyond treating periodicals as mere sources of information and explores the forces shaping scholarly journals that typically remain hidden to their readers. It examines the four-decade run of the Zeitschrift für Anglistik und Amerikanistik ( ZAA ) in the German Democratic Republic using numerous, previously unpublished archival sources. It reveals how, beyond economics and academia, politics and ideology can play a decisive role in how a humanities journal is produced and read across borders. The volume thus provides an eye-opening look at the ways journals are shaped by much more than academic trends, not only in the context of the Cold War, but also today, in our increasingly politicized world.

The spectacular return of the repressed is one of the determinants of the particular rhythm of modernity. The machine also plays its part. When the desires and fears linked to the machine, abandoned, silent, hidden behind the veil of progress, emerge, they create a kind of phenomenology of the machine, which for many decades constituted a point of reference for literary and artistic activities. The machine is, so to speak, interiorised; inextricably linked to affects and desires, it becomes what I propose to call an intimate machine. This process is explored here through the works of Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes and others, including Roussel, Artaud and Didi-Huberman, as well as in contemporary erotic literature.

Media and Education : Addressing Racism in Norway /
:
In Media and Education: Addressing Racism in Norway , we explore critical questions about Norway's hidden history of racism and its implications today. Why has Norway largely overlooked its role in the transatlantic slave trade? How do media representations shape public perceptions of race? What can education do to confront and dismantle systemic racism? This book uncovers the complex interplay between historical narratives, media portrayals, and educational practices, offering fresh insights into the ongoing struggle for racial justice in a diversifying society. We present rare archival images and previously unpublished data that challenge conventional understandings of Norwegian identity and history. Through compelling case studies-like the "Human Zoo" exhibition and the tragic death of Eugene Obiora-we engage you with powerful stories that highlight the lived realities of racism in Norway. You will witness how these histories resonate within contemporary antiracist movements and educational discourse. This timely work is essential for educators, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding and addressing racial issues in Norway and beyond. Join us in sparking meaningful conversations and actions towards a more inclusive future.

The shipwreck of Gnalić : a mirror to the Renaissance world /
:
Unlike official history, which takes long and impersonal strides through the past, 'The Shipwreck of Gnalic' describes individual human destinies that convey the story of the late Renaissance period throughout Europe and the Mediterranean as uncovered at the site of the shipwreck. Transiting the permanent route between Venice and Constantinople, the ship Gagliana grossa, formerly known as Lezza, Moceniga e Basadonna, symbolically connected two apparently opposing, yet tightly interwoven worlds. The stunning objects that spent four centuries at the bottom of the sea briefly made the Gnalic shipwreck famous in the 1960s and 1970s, but only in recent years has the scholarly community finally started collecting all the available information hidden in museum collections, at the shipwreck site, and in the archives.
