Imperial Ideology and Architecture /
:
The goals and tactics of a state's ruling elite influence its artistic and architectural output, shaping the overall characteristics, orientation, and themes of its creations. Architecture reflects political ideology and historical events, showcasing the power and cultural values of the state, with implications for politics and authority. This book presents a comprehensive and nuanced exploration of the intricate interplay between art, politics, and religion within the architectural legacy of Mamluk Damascus. It sheds light on how these dynamics enrich our comprehension of the past and contribute to contemporary dialogues concerning the preservation of cultural heritage.

Moving in the Margins: Desert Travel and Power in Medieval Central Asia /
:
Central Asia has been perceived as a landscape of connections, of Silk Roads; an endless plain across which waves of conquerors swiftly rode on horseback. In reality the region is highly fragmented and difficult to traverse, and overcoming these obstacles led to routes becoming associated with epic travel and high-value trade. Put simply, the inhabitants of these lands became experts in the art of travelling the margins. This volume seeks to unravel some of the myths of long-distance roads in Central Asia, using a desert case-study to put forward a new hypothesis for how medieval landscapes were controlled and manipulated.

The Rise of the Avant-Gardes 1848-1918 : A Transnational History /
:
Why did modern painting flourish in Paris, Vienna, or Brussels but stall in London or Madrid? What propelled some avant-gardes to global fame while others vanished? This book takes you inside modern art's explosive rise between 1848 and 1918, revealing how artists navigated nationalism, markets, elite networks, and public demands to invent new ways of making-and living-art. Forget the myth of isolated geniuses. Here, avant-gardes cross borders via dealers, journals, exhibitions, and exiles. Follow their journey from Paris to Moscow, Barcelona, and New York through alliances, rivalries, and migrations. Richly illustrated with artworks, maps, and charts, this is art history reimagined-transnational, social, and vividly alive.

Art and Politics between the Arab World and Latin America /
:
Intertwined with the histories of Arab migration to the Americas from the nineteenth century until now, the emergence of competing nationalist narratives within Arab communities in Latin America, and the birth of anti-imperialist and anticolonial struggles, the history of cultural entanglements between the Arab world and Latin America spans over a hundred years--and reveals the vital role of art in creating bridges between the two regions. This book, the first of its kind, gathers interventions that showcase the twentieth century as a period of intense redefinitions and cultural effervescence across the whole of Latin America and the Arab world. The result is a polished image of the twentieth century as a period whose shifting categories of affiliation were tied to events and movements that connected the two regions in ever deepening ways, and to forms of artful experimentation through which political ideologies, alternative collective identities, and aesthetic movements could be contested or embraced. Contributors are Diogo Bercito, Kevin Funk, Silvina Schammah Gesser, Laure Guirguis, Olivier Hadouchi, Julia Solana Jáuregui, John Tofik Karam, Edgardo Manero, Mariano Mestman, Gabriella Nugent, Maru Pabón, Laura Reali and Juan José Vagni.

Love, Honour and God : Pashto Writings of Early Modern Times /
:
Love, Honour and God tells about the talented and determined people who challenged the dominance of the Persophone written culture and created literature in their mother tongue, Pashto. Offering insights into the lives and literary accomplishments of many acclaimed and less known Pashtun authors of the early modern period, this book traces the development of Pashto writings from around 1530 to 1830 as a considered pursuit of an educational mission and a verbal affirmation of ethnic identity. Based primarily on original texts in Pashto verse and prose, the book explores social views, aesthetic preferences and spiritual values that underlie modern ideologies and cultural awareness of Pashto-speaking communities in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

La Cachette de karnak : nouvelles perspectives sur les découvertes de Georges Legrain /
:
The Karnak Cachette, excavated by Georges Legrain between 1903 and 1907, is one of the most fascinating discoveries of Egyptian archaeology. The first reason lies in the very high number of objects found in it (statues, stelae, furniture of various kinds), some of them still unpublished, all of which are documents of major importance for the religious life of Karnak, but also more generally for the history and art of Pharaonic Egypt between the Middle Kingdom and the Ptolemaic period. The second reason is that the raison d'être of this cache and the historical circumstances surrounding its creation remain mysterious. Even if some comparisons can be made with other caches found in Egypt and the Sudan, its magnitude and wealth are exceptional. Building on a research program launched by the Ifao and the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities to improve our knowledge of the Karnak Cachette and its content, this book comprises twenty-four contributions by international scholars studying objects found in this deposit, analyzing the Cachette itself, or investigating other Egyptian caches from an ideological or archaeological point of view."--Back cover. |u www.ifao.egnet.net/publications/catalogue/978-2-7247-0657-4
