Aurora (Morgen Röte im auffgang, 1612) and Ein gründlicher Bericht or A fundamental report (Mysterium Pansophicum, 1620) /
:
Jacob Boehme's Aurora (Morgen Röte im auffgang, 1612) exercised a vast open or underground influence on popular and mystical religion, poetry, and philosophy from Germany to England to Russia. This beautiful and highly original work containing elements of alchemical, esoteric, and anticlerical thought is a portal to the cultural, scientific, and theological currents on the eve of the Thirty Years' War. Its author heralded the new heliocentrism, opposed intolerance and religious conflict, and entertained an ecstatic vision of order reconciled with freedom. This first modern English translation places the translated text opposite an edition of the German manuscript from the author's own hand. Also included is the brief, influential Fundamental Report (Gründlicher Bericht, 1620) in a critical edition and translation. An extensive commentary that cites documents of the time offers access to the sources of Boehme's themes and concepts.

Takfīr im militanten Salafismus : a Der Staat als Feind /
:
With this work, Justyna Nedza presents the first comprehensive analysis of the theologically charged legal practice of "declaring someone an unbeliever" ( takfir ) in militant Salafist thought. Her investigation zooms in on the role of takfir in the formal legitimization of militant jihad against government institutions. Investigating both the Egyptian and Saudi Arabian case, Nedza demonstrates the importance of the regional context in shaping consistent legal arguments for the legitimacy of takfir of collectives. The careful analysis of the arguments of four selected militant Salafist authors brings out that this contextuality plays also a decisive role for the respective textual references, as well as shaping the conclusions drawn by the Egyptian and Saudi Arabian authors, respectively.

:
The epoch from the eighth century B.C.E. up to the exile is marked by a great transformation in the society of ancient Judah, as reflected especially in the texts of the pre-exilic prophets. A relatively egalitarian society transforms into a class society, wherein a class of wealthy landowners is opposed to a growing class of impoverished farmers. The main factor in this development is the indebtedness of the farmers. All the forces of society and state are afflicted by this transformation. This book endeavours to describe this transformation as precisely as possible, by examining the prophetical texts , and other biblical and epigraphical materials. Unlike the theories of \'annuity capitalism\' or \'antique development\' the work especially stresses the role of the state and its organs in this transformation.

This is the first book-length study about the usage of the form of literary dialogue in Arabic literature. Regula Forster studies an extensive corpus of Classical Arabic didactic dialogues on very different subjects (religion, jurisprudence, alchemy, history, et cetera) from the 8th to the mid-11th centuries. She shows that Arabic dialogues are by no means dialogised treatises. Rather, they create a literary universe of their own. In this universe, figures are shown to be acting and speaking in time and space. Therefore, the dialogues use specific forms of argumentation and structuring. Through the use of the literary form of dialogue the content of these texts is shaped and the knowledge presented channelled.

Nacktheit im Alten Ägypten : Episteme, Lexeme und (Re-)Konstruktionen /
:
There is an overwhelming wealth of material on nudity and nakedness which has come down to us from Ancient Egypt. As a socio-cultural construct found in images and texts, the naked/nude body can be associated with negative, positive, and neutral connotations. Ancient Egyptian image-text-compositions can be used to study what was perceived as "naked" or "nude" and how the body was emically evaluated in certain situational contexts. Of special interest are also the epistemes surrounding the naked/nude body and how it was perceived and interpreted by researchers, whose conceptualizations of corporealities are sometimes biased. This monograph offers a comprehensive analysis of the representations and meanings of the naked/nude body in Pharaonic Egypt between the 5th and 30th Dynasties (c. 2300-350 BC). The focus is on a lexicological and lexicographical analysis of the conceptual field [nudity/nakedness]: Seven lexemes are analyzed in detail in order to grasp the semantic nuances and situational use of terms in the context of Ancient Egyptian texts. Taking into account a broad spectrum of text types, a solid foundation is laid for comparing statements about the naked/nude body found in texts with visual culture consisting of two- and three-dimensional pictorial representations. Alongside insights into the Ancient Egyptian lexicon, this study contributes to the cultural and social anthropology of Ancient Egypt, showing how nakedness/nudity was contextually and discursively constructed. The result is a nuanced view of nakedness/nudity as a culturally shaped concept, providing fresh insights into clothing and gender roles in Ancient Egypt.

Erzählte Welten im Richterbuch : narratologische Aspekte eines polyfonen Diskurses /
:
The Book of Judges presents a (re)construction of Israel's history that recalls a splendid past but simultaneously offers a very critical view. This study focuses on the narrated worlds of the stories and the way they contribute to the central theme: the search for obligatory and beneficial guidelines for the people. A detailed narratological analysis of the narrated worlds shows how the different perspectives presented in the texts engage in a controversial dialogue. Although the composition of the stories indicates a systematisation, these attempts are repeatedly deconstructed. Thus the Book of Judges eludes any one-sided interpretation and remains a retrospection between admiration and disconcertment.

Jesu Lehren im Thomasevangelium /
:
In this book, Thomas Zöckler treats the Gospel of Thomas as a witness to a distinctive early branch of the tradition of Jesus' teachings which shows a variety of theological notions and ideas. The author first considers Thomas' position within the early sayings tradition, summarizing the main arguments for this gospel's independence from the Synoptic Gospels, and comparing in detail the versions of the four wisdom sayings in Thomas and Q. In a second part, Zöckler identifies three theological motifs that dominate Thomas' sayings collection (Searching and Finding, Life and Death, Twoness and Oneness) and interprets the selected sayings which substantiate the relevance and significance of these motifs. This detailed exegetical investigation contributes to the growing recognition that teachings which the Gospel of Thomas ascribes to Jesus, many of which do not fit the Synoptic Gospel's theology and picture of Jesus, clearly belonged nevertheless to an early stage of the sayings tradition. At the same time, Zöckler's work adds to our growing understanding of the meaning of these teachings.

:
The last unexcavated stone sanctuary from the Greco-Roman period, the Temple of Athribis near Sohag in Middle Egypt, remained partially buried until the beginning of this century. The focus of the Athribis (Atripe) conference in context, held from June 7th to 9th, 2022 in Tubingen, was the large number of research results already achieved from different disciplines as well as future research strands. The associated conference proceedings, edited by Marcus Muller and Carolina Teotino-Tattko, are dedicated to these results and cover a wide range of topics in 19 contributions based on archaeological, philological, technical and religious-historical approaches. The investigations deal with the excavated temple rooms, inscriptions and the recovered individual finds and place them in the regional and supra-regional context. Studies of architecture, art history and various groups of materials from the material remains provide a great variety of insights into the construction of the temple, its chronology and ultimately the everyday lives of the residents at the time. The sanctuary in Athribis is a veritable witness to its multi-faceted fate, which can be felt not only in its rooms, walls and ceilings, but also in the archaeological findings and findings.

In this volume, Christian Hornung examines the abandonment of faith in the Christianity of Late Antiquity. After an extensive introduction dealing with apostasy in the non-Christian world he approaches the subject from three perspectives: theology, church discipline and pastoral care. Hornung analyses the theological explanatory models of different ecclesiastical writers concerning apostasy, early (Canon) Law and concrete examples of apostates in urban parishes. In contrast with prior classical and patristic scholarship, he points out that apostasy remains a fundamental problem for Christianity in the time after Constantine the Great. Furthermore, the special composition of Hornung's work delivers new insights into the relationship between early Canon Law and pastoral care.

(Im)politeness in Ancient Egypt : Norms, Wit, and Rudeness in Texts from Pharaonic Times through Late Antiquity /
:
(Im)politeness in Ancient Egypt is the first book-length study of (im)politeness in ancient Egyptian texts. Leading experts in their respective corpora examine a range of textual sources spanning approximately 2,000 years, using the latest frameworks for analyzing language in usage. This edited volume asks how ancient Egyptians adapted and modified their language to persuade, complain, or mock, and how they assessed the risks and benefits of communicating with those above or below them in the social hierarchy. The papers explore whether ancient Egyptians used politeness freely and strategically, or were constrained by mandatory social rules. The documents presented, translated, and analyzed in this book include personal letters, ritual utterances, fictional stories, dialogue captions in tomb scenes, and messages to dead relatives.
