In Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis Valentino Gasparini and Richard Veymiers present a collection of reflections on the individuals and groups which animated one of Antiquity's most dynamic, significant and popular religious phenomena: the reception of the cults of Isis and other Egyptian gods throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. These communities, whose members seem to share the same religious identity, for a long time have been studied in a monolithic way through the prism of the Cumontian category of the "Oriental religions". The 26 contributions of this book, divided into three sections devoted to the "agents", their "images" and their "practices", shed new light on this religious movement that appears much more heterogeneous and colorful than previously recognized.

"Die Einheit von Bild und Text wird in der neueren Forschung als "Grosshieroglyphe" bezeichnet, um diese Einheit von der modernen Vorstellung des "Bildes" abzugrenzen. Der Begriff impliziert, dass man die agyptischen Ritualszenen lesen und deuten kann, sobald man ihnen mit dem notwendigen Wissen begegnet. Bild und Text sind auf den Wanden agyptischer Tempel, und nicht nur dort, inhaltlich eng miteinander verbunden. Sie nehmen Rucksicht auf die Architektur, auf Rituale, auf die Topographie u.a.m. Diese Wechselbeziehung war Thema der 12. Agyptischen Tempeltagung, die der Corona-Pandemie wegen abgesagt werden musste, deren geplante Vortrage jedoch nun in diesem Band publiziert werden. In den zwolf Beitragen (deutsch, englisch, franzosisch) wird untersucht, inwieweit Bild und Text in agyptischen Tempeln aufeinander Rucksicht nahmen, welche Fehler beim Anbringen an Tempelwanden entstanden und wie man sie ggf. korrigierte. Wie wurde in den Darstellungen reagiert, wenn man Besonderheiten in den Texten beachten musste und umgekehrt? Solche Besonderheiten ergaben sich aus der Rucksichtnahme auf die Architektur, auf Neuentwicklungen und Traditionen. Angesprochen werden Beziehungen zwischen den Tempeln gemeinsamer Rituale, die Ubernahme von Texten und Bildern und von Neuerungen bei der Darstellung des Kultgeschehens. Die Beitrage werfen teils alte Fragen neu auf, etwa die Frage nach der Darstellung des realen, also dreidimensionalen Raums im Flachbild oder nach der beabsichtigten Vieldeutigkeit der Bilder, nach Konnotationen in Texten durch Auswahlen oder Anpassen von Hieroglyphen an die Darstellungen. Es wird auch thematisiert, wer die Texte und Darstellungen in den Raumlichkeiten der Tempel sehen und lesen konnte und wie z.B. Texte und Darstellungen der Ritualszenen auf die architektonischen Gegebenheiten eines Tempels, etwa Platzmangel durch Treppen und Turen, reagierten"--

The relationships between Pauline literature and the Dead Sea scrolls have fascinated specialists ever since the latter were first discovered. Now that all the Qumran scrolls have been published, it is possible to see more clearly the amplitude and impact of this corpus on first century Judaism. This book offers some syntheses of the results obtained in the last decades, and also opens up new perspectives, by highlighting similarities and indicating possible relationships between these various writings within Mediterranean Judaism. The Umayyads, the first dynasty of Islam, ruled over a vast empire from their central province of Syria, providing a line of caliphs from 661 to 750. Another branch later ruled in al-Andalus - Islamic Spain - from 756 to 1031, ruling first as emirs and then as caliphs themselves. This book is the first to bring together studies of this far-flung family and treat it not as two unrelated caliphates but as a single enterprise. Yet for all that historians have made note of Umayyad accomplishments in the Near East and al-Andalus, Umayyad legacies - what later generations made of these caliphs and their achievements - are poorly understood. The present volume offers twelve studies dealing with feminine figures in Gnosticism and Manichaeism. In Part One ("Images et symboles"), the Author unveils the hidden meaning of some feminine figures having played a role on the mythical scene of those trends. Some of these figures, borrowed from other traditions, have been deeply reworked by Gnostics or Manichees assuming thereby a new significance. An intermezzo ("Passages") investigates the presence of women names in titles preserved in the Nag Hammadi Library and the relationship between a female protagonist and a specific literary genre. Part Two ("Histoire et réalité") reconstructs the portraits of some women, especially Manichaean, to whom the historical inquiry gives life again, thanks to a fresh reading of first hand sources, as well of heresiological or archeological testimonies. Some of these studies have been previously published and have now been significantly updated and expanded. Some others are lectures on Feminine in Gnosticism and Manichaeism given by the Author in Sorbonne, Paris, since 1994. *** Les douze études que rassemble ce volume abordent sous différentes facettes le personnage de la femme dans la gnose et dans le manichéisme. Dans la première partie (« Images et symboles »), l'Auteur dévoile la signification cachée de quelques figures féminines qui ont joué un rôle sur la scène du mythe. Si les auteurs gnostiques et manichéens ont emprunté certaines d'entre elles à d'autres traditions, ils ont toutefois remodelé ces figures en profondeur en les chargeant d'une nouvelle signification. La deuxième partie (« Passages ») s'interroge sur la présence de noms féminins dans les titres conservés de la bibliothèque de Nag Hammadi et sur la relation éventuelle entre une protagoniste féminine et le choix d'un genre littéraire. Dans Le Coran par lui-même , Anne-Sylvie Boisliveau livre une analyse passionnante de la manière dont le Coran est l'architecte de sa propre image. Loin d'être un texte sans relief, celui-ci utilise un vocabulaire, des procédés rhétoriques et une argumentation soigneusement choisis pour orienter l'image qu'auditeurs ou lecteurs se feront de lui. Une analyse serrée du vocabulaire autoréférentiel montre que le Coran se décrit lui-même comme Ecriture « façon judéo-chrétienne » représentant un enjeu de communication. Mais surtout, par un triple discours - sur les actions divines, sur les Ecritures révélées antérieurement, telles la Bible, et sur la fonction prophétique -, le Coran se confère à lui-même le monopole de l'autorité issue de la révélation divine et pousse l'auditeur/lecteur à s'y soumettre. In Le Coran par lui-même , Anne-Sylvie Boisliveau provides a ground-breaking analysis of the way the Qurʾān is the architect of its own image. Far from being a flat text, the Qurʾān uses carefully chosen vocabulary, rhetorical tools and argumentation to direct the image that listeners or readers will then have in mind. A close analysis of its self-referential vocabulary shows that the Qurʾān describes itself as a Scripture "in a Judeo-Christian style" which communicative function is stressed. By a triple discourse (on divine actions, on previous Scriptures such as the Bible and on prophethood), the Qurʾān grants itself the monopoly of divine authority through revelation and pushes the listener/reader into a decisive submission.
