Creating resistances: pastoral care in a postcolonial world /
:
Multiple forms of oppression, injustice, and violence today have roots in histories of colonialism. This connection to the past feels familiar for some and less relevant for others. Understanding and responding to these connections is more crucial than ever, yet some resist rather than face this task directly. Others resist oppressive postcolonial conditions. Using intercultural stories and pastoral care scholarship, this book charts pathways through five resistances (not me, not here, not now, not relevant, not possible) to awaken creative pastoral care in a postcolonial world. McGarrah Sharp recommends practices that everyone can do: believing in each other, revisiting how histories are taught, imagining more passable futures, heeding prophetic poets, and crossing borders with healthy boundaries.

Incubation as a type-scene in the Aqhatu, Kirta, and Hannah storie s a form-critical...
:
Prior studies of incubation have approached it from a history of religions perspective, with a view to historically reconstruct the actual practice of incubation in ancient Near East. However, this approach has proven unfruitful, not due to the dearth of relevant data, but because of the confusion with regard to the definition of the term incubation. Suggesting a way out of this impasse in previous scholarship, this book proposes to read the so-called "incubation" texts from the perspective of incubation as a literary device, namely, as a type-scene. It applies Nagler's definition of a type-scene to a literary analysis of two Ugaritic mythical texts, the Aqhatu and Kirta stories, and one biblical story, the Hannah story.

The Pneumatological Imagination : A Theological Concert in Honor of Amos Yong /
:
This collection is one of the most comprehensive elaborations of "the pneumatological imagination"-a disposition to God and the world shaped by the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Scholars in theology, biblical studies, history, and theological education interact with, build on, and critically evaluate this highly important hermeneutical principal in conversation with the theology of Amos Yong and in its own right. The contributors represent several different cultural and ethnic contexts, Church traditions, and kinds of institutions of higher education. They will guide you from beginning understandings of the pneumatological imagination to sophisticated deployments of it through a concert in honor of their colleague and friend.

Solon of Athens : new historical and philological approaches /
:
This volume offers a range of innovative approaches to Solon of Athens, legendary law-giver, statesman, and poet of the early sixth century B.C. In the first part, Solon's poetry is reconsidered against the background of oral poetics and other early Greek poetry. The connection between Solon's alleged roles as poet and as politician is fundamentally questioned. Part two offers a reassessment of Solon's laws based on a revision of the textual tradition and recent views on early Greek lawgiving. In part three, fresh scrutiny of the archeological and written evidence of archaic Greece results in new perspectives on the agricultural crisis and Solon's role in the social and political developments of sixth-century Athens. The theology of Amos Yong and the new face of Pentecostal scholarship : passion for the spirit /
:
In The Theology of Amos Yong and the New Face of Pentecostal Scholarship , Wolfgang Vondey and Martin William Mittelstadt gather a table of experts on one of the most influential voices in current Pentecostal theology. The authors provide an introduction and critical assessment of Yong's biblical foundations, hermeneutics, epistemology, philosophical presuppositions, trinitarian theology, theology of religions, ecumenical and interfaith relations, theology of disability, engagement with contemporary culture, and participation in the theology and science conversation. These diverse topics are pursued through the complementary perspectives that together shape Yong's methodology: pneumatology, pentecostalism, and the possibility of renewal. The contributors invite a more thorough reading of Yong's work and propose a more substantial engagement with the new face of Pentecostal scholarship. Contributors include Andrew Carver, Jacob D. Dodson, Jeff Hittenberger, Mark Mann, Martin William Mittelstadt, L. William Oliverio, Jr., David A. Reed, Tony Richie, Christopher A. Stephenson, Steven M. Studebaker, Paraskevè (Eve) Tibbs, and Wolfgang Vondey.

Faith Lost: Faith Regained : Rediscovering a Transforming Christian Belief /
:
A holistic, positive answer to modernist and post-modernist challenges to Christian faith. Recent trends in theology have adapted to what has been assumed to be universally valid scientific thinking, thereby contributing to the erosion of traditional protestant belief. Pointing to parable as a tool of understanding and appealing to aesthetic appreciation as an analogy, the author makes an impassioned call for a return to an assured biblical faith. The answer lies in a fuller epistemology and a profounder ontology to explain the universe and man's place in it.

Handbook of global contemporary Christianity : movements, institutions, and allegiance /
:
The Handbook of Contemporary Christianity: Movements, Institutions andamp; Allegiance traces how the largest religion in the world continues to be expressed in energetic global dynamic forms. In contemporary times Christianity is increasingly exposed to divisions, not only through its traditional channels - Roman Catholic, Protestant and the Orthodoxy - nor conservative and liberal streams, but numerous nuanced articulations. This is reflected in the roles of clergy and lay people, in organisational dynamics, sources of allegiance and articulations of the faith, movements of renewal and revivalism, syncretic modes, and broader relationships with wider cultural trajectories and changing social circumstances. Collectively the contributors to this volume offer a comprehensive exploration of these themes. The volume is a companion to the Handbook of Global Contemporary Christianity.

Limits of Freedom of Public Authorities with Respect to Obtaining Evidence at the Stage of Investigation : A Comparative Legal Study /
:
Any democratic legal system recognizes that the pursuit of the truth about a crime must have impassable limits, and that in contemporary legal systems the public authorities' principle of freedom to obtain evidence in criminal proceedings is not absolute. Drawing these boundaries is a permanent process, which produces universal legal problems of fundamental practical importance. This book addresses the fundamental importance of the protection of the individual from potential actions of state bodies that violate legally marked boundaries. Contributors synthesize knowledge about the admissibility of evidence in criminal procedure, evidence that must not be used or should not be used under certain circumstances, and the conditions for the admissibility of unlawfully obtained evidence. This comparative analysis of national evidentiary procedures is an essential showcase of certain legislative patterns and similarities between individual legal systems. See Less

The Political Economy of South Africa's Post-apartheid Transition : The Rejection of Alternatives to Neoliberalism Critical Reconstructions of Political Economy, Volume 7 /
:
South Africa's post-apartheid transition has proven disastrous. It is marked by the emergence of a black elite of enriched capitalists out of the globalisation, neoliberalisation and financialisation of the economy in general and of its Minerals-Energy and Financial Complex in particular. By contrast, inequalities, poverty and failing social provision have persisted. Recent attention has shifted to how this disastrous trajectory was initiated, some suggesting a lack of available alternative policy options at the time of transition. This is shown to be false with a full range of progressive alternatives being rejected with corresponding consequences, from "state capture" to electoral defeat.

David Jones : a Christian modernist? : new approaches to his art, poetry and cultural theory /
:
David Jones: A Christian Modernist? is a major reassessment of the work of the poet, artist and essayist David Jones (1895-1974) in light of the complex, ambiguous idea of a 'Christian modernism'. His richly experimental and palimpsestic poetry, art and thought drew extensively on Christian tradition and symbolism as a key to the future: rejecting a technocratic and utilitarian modernity in favour of a revitalised culture of sign and sacrament. This volume examines historical influences on Jones's development, his impassioned engagement with the idea of modernity and with modernist literature and art, the theological sources and resonances of his work, and contemporary or late-modern perspectives on his achievement.

New perspectives on healing, restoration, and reconciliation in John's gospel /
:
In New Perspectives on Healing, Restoration and Reconciliation in John , Jacobus (Kobus) Kok investigates the depth and applicability of Jesus' healing narratives in John's gospel. Against the background of an ancient group-oriented worldview, it goes beyond the impasse of most Western approaches to interpreting the Biblical healing narratives to date. He argues that the concept of healing was understood in antiquity (as in some parts of Africa) in a much broader way than we tend to understand it today. He shows inter alia why the interaction between Jesus and the Samaritan woman could be interpreted as a healing narrative, illustrating the ancient interrelationship between healing, restoration and reconciliation.

Gnostic Revisions of Genesis Stories and Early Jesus Traditions /
:
This book argues that the intellectuals behind early Gnostic revisions of Genesis stories were second-century Christians with an ideological background in Greek-Hellenistic philosophy, who adopted and reinterpreted biblical narrative materials with a view to exposing the inferiority of the creator-God of Genesis and the ignorance of those Christians who continued to worship this God. It also discusses controversies between Gnostic and early orthodox Christians about the person and the mission of Jesus Christ. The first part examines the possible polemical function, the philosophical thought structure, and the narrative scheme of the Genesis rewritings, and continues with studies of individual episodes of the Gnostic myth, from the creation of Adam up to the story of Noah and the Flood. The second part focuses on Gnostic reinterpretations of the teaching and the passion of Jesus. The book includes essays about Gnostic theology, ancient and modern readings of Gnostic texts, and an appendix dealing with the ancient baptist community in which Mani was reared.

Ecclesial recognition with Hegelian philosophy, social psychology and continental political theory : an interdisciplinary proposal /
:
Ecclesial Recognition proffers a framework for churches to accept the legitimacy and authenticity of each other as the Church in the dialogical process towards fuller communion. Typically, 'recognition' and its reception investigate theologically the sufficiency of creeds as ecumenical statements of unity, the agreeability of essential sacramentality of the church, and the recognition of its ministries as the churches' witness of the gospel. This monograph conceives ecclesial recognition as an intersubjective dynamics of inclusion and exclusion amid identity formation and consensus development, with insights from Hegelian philosophy, group social psychology, and the Frankfurt School Axel Honneth's political theory. The viability of this interdisciplinary approach is demonstrated from the French Dominican Yves Congar's oeuvre, with implications for intra-Communion and inter-Church relations. \'Dr Lim examines philosophical recognition theory, group social psychology and political recognition theory to analyse the non-theological impasses confronting the whole ecumenical movement.\' - Rev Dr Trevor Hoggard, Director English-speaking Ministries, Methodist Church of New Zealand. \'Lim masterfully argues for the viability of an interdisciplinary approach to ecumenical recognition within communities, among churches, and in their common pastoral mission." - Fr. and Professor Radu Bordeianu, Duquesne University , and Orthodox theologian, Representative of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh, and Assistant Priest of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh. "This book makes an important contribution to ecumenical ecclesiology." - Rev. Dr and Professor Sandra Beardsall, St Andrew's College , Canada and United Church of Canada Ordained Minister. "I find Dr. Lim's work a solid and necessary contribution to ecumenical work around the world." - Rev. Dr. and Professor Dominick D. Hanckle, Regent University , and priest of the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches. "With penetrating analysis and creative suggestions, this monograph takes the talk about ecumenical recognition in a new level." - Professor Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, University of Helsinki .

Tušpa : The Capital of Urartians /
:
Tušpa (Tushpa), the capital of the Urartians who established their state on the Eastern Anatolian High Plateau in the 9th century BC, provides invaluable material remains-monuments and inscriptions-that help us understand this ancient civilization. This book presents the results of new research conducted between 2010 and 2019, building on nearly 170 years of ongoing studies in this ancient city. Tushpa, the earliest example of a new settlement model developed by Assyria's perennial enemy, occupies a strategic position on the high plateau north of the Taurus Mountains. Through this book, you will gain insight into the settlement policies of the Urartians, who built their cities in plains surrounded by impassable mountains. These policies are reflected in their inscriptions, architectural styles, and the intricate weaving of stone walls.
