This volume is part of the Project of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) on documents pertaining to the economic history of British rule in India from 1858 to 1947. The present volume (divided into two parts A and B) on Southern India in the late nineteenth century roughly covers the broad economic history of Southern India during the 1880s and 1890s. It dwells on documents collected from a wide spectrum of human activity in Southern India. They included materials from diverse fields such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, education and sanitation, in each of which the British Raj was involved in collecting information and directing the courses of development in more than one sense. A large part of Southern India was under raiyatwari settlement and an enormous number of documents were available touching on agricultural operations, agricultural appliances, material conditions of agricultural classes, population change, health and mortality, literacy and primary education, values of livestock and cattle diseases, production and export of cash crops, production and supply of food grains, distribution of waste lands, forests and reclamation of jungle lands, and scarcity and famines. These twenty years in the Madras Presidency immediately followed three developments earlier in the century. First, this is the period of the last stage of survey and settlement for what has been called the new ryotwari system. Second, the region experienced different measures of the government for the 'improvement' of the conditions of the people for which Raghavaiyanger spoke so eloquently. Finally, this was also a period of social conflict between the depressed classes like the Paraiyans and landowners of various categories. This volume touches on these crucial developments, and is thus expected to be a valuable source for students of the history of economic and human development of India.

In Transnational Religious Organization and Practice Stanley John provides the first in-depth analysis of a migrant Christian community in the Arabian Gulf. The book explores how Kerala (South India) Pentecostal churches in Kuwait organize and practice their Christian faith, given the status of their congregants as temporary economic migrants and noting that the transient status heightens their transnational orientation toward their homeland in India. The research follows a twofold agenda: first, examining the unique sociopolitical and migrational context within which the KPCs function, and second, analyzing the transnational character and structural patterns that have emerged in this context. The present volume, in two parts, completes the documentation of the first year of South Asian independence as seen from British official records. This traumatic year had been marked by horrendous communal violence; mass movement of refugees; war in Kashmir; the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi (and death of Mohammed Ali Jinnah a little after its end); as well as huge economic and political problems in both India and Pakistan. The Acting British High Commissioner in India summed up the first year of India's independence graphically in September 1948 when he wrote: 'The most remarkable perhaps of the achievements of Pandit Nehru's Government is that they survived at all in face of the quite overwhelming difficulties.' The work covers a wide range of developments but two issues are at its centre - Kashmir and Hyderabad. As regards Kashmir, hopes of a settlement were raised by the arrival of the U.N. Kashmir Commission in South Asia in July 1948. However, by September it was clear that the Commission had not been immediately successful in its endeavours. Information received from Richard Symonds, an official on the Commission's staff, is included. On Hyderabad the record is one of economic warfare, frequent rumours of an Indian invasion to unite the State with India and attempts by Mountbatten, Mirza Ismail and Roy Bucher (the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army) to bring about a peaceful settlement. Eventually Indian forces entered the State on 13 September and the volume ends with the Nizam's capitulation on 17 September. Included as appendices are important surveys of the Hyderabad situation.

The Portuguese Presence in India : Malabar and Goa /

The Portuguese mariners under Vasco da Gama in search of spices landed on the Malabar Coast at the fag end of the fifteenth century. Slowly they established factories, fortresses and other commercial establishments in places allotted to them by the local rulers, while their missionary zeal brought them in contact with people of the Malabar Coast, both non-Christians as well as St. Thomas Christians. The economic, social and cultural legacy of the Portuguese interaction with the Malabar Coast is clearly discernible in the geographic segment now known as Kerala. Once the Portuguese obtained territorial possessions outside the Malabar Coast, they commenced to establish political control and introduced European administrative apparatus in Asia. However, these colonies could not be kept under the Portuguese sway forever. They made attempts to liberate themselves from the colonial authority of the Portuguese finally leading to their liberation. During the Portuguese presence in India for over 450 years, innumerable social transformations took place. This book is an attempt to explore the themes related to economy, trade, commercial ventures, urbanization, socio-cultural interactions as well as the various stages of movements connected with the liberation of Portuguese settlements in India.

A class of child artists in Mexico, a ship full of child refugees from Spain, classrooms of child pageant actors, and a pair of boy ambassadors revealed facets of hemispheric politics in the Good Neighbor era. Culture-makers in the Americas tuned into to children as producers of cultural capital to advance their transnational projects. In many instances, prevailing conceptions of children as innocent, primitive, dependent, and underdeveloped informed perceptions of Latin America as an infantilized region, a lesser "Other Americas" on the continent. In other cases, children's interventions in the cultural politics, economic projects, and diplomatic endeavors of the interwar period revealed that Latin American children saw themselves as modern, professional, participants in forging inter-American relationships.
