Trade, Transport and Tanda : Shifting Identities of the Banjaras /

The Banjaras were primarily a nomadic group. During the reign of Alauddin Khalji they were organized to collect grains from the country-side for smooth running of the market reforms. Later, they became an indispensable part of the Mughal economy and acquired a very important role as transporters for the empire and even continued with the same status under the East India Company. Banjaras were not only the suppliers, traders or transporters they also served as the commissariat for the Mughals and John Company. The main items they transported were non perishable goods mainly; grains and salt. Based on Chittiyat, Arzdasht and Arshatta documents archived at Rajasthan State Archives, Bikaner and travelogues, this volume focuses not only on the role and organization of Banjaras and Tanda but also on the shifting identity of Banjaras from nomadic to criminal over a period of time. The introduction of railways in India drastically changed the fate of these born transporters of the empire. The change of regime and the introduction of a new mode of transport led to the marginalization of the Banjaras and their practical elimination from the economic activities of the subcontinent.

Nirguna Bhakti in Eastern India : Ideology, Identity and Resistance /

Like in other parts of India, the Bhakti movement also spread into the eastern regions in the early sixteenth century, and had brought a large section of the people under its banner stretching from Koch Behar in the west in North Bengal to the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern frontier. The present work is a comprehensive, but a critical history of the growth and development of the mystical movement in this part of India from the early sixteenth to seventeenth century with special reference to the Māyāmarā sect, which claims to be nirguna in its essence, teachings, social ideology, and political influence. While doing this, the book has re-examined the theory that bhakti movement ultimately failed to usher in a democratic outlook and egalitarian aspects as it had originally proposed, and that it had ultimately submitted to the strong and dominant conservative forces. With a detailed and sceptical examination of the ideological and philosophical aspects of Sankaradeva, the founder of Bhakti movement in the eastern part of India, the work proceeds on to examine the historical situation behind the emergence of the radical branch of the movement, and its social and political implications. It shows how within every conservative structure, there remains a radical force which always carries on the forces of reform, resistance, and protest against the dominant ideology, if necessary even by adoption of militant methods. The emergence of the Māyāmarā sect from within the bhakti ideology, its role in the making of the society, and a militant resistant movement against the dominant class form the crux of the present work. While doing this, it has questioned many of the existing ideas and concepts about the movement, particularly, in this part of India.

The Dvādas Bhāv, A Mughal version of a Sanskrit story /

The Mughal emperor Akbar had a Sanskrit book called the Dvādas Bhāv translated to Farsi. Dismembered pages or painted folios from this manuscript were dispersed in auctions. This is the first time this book has been put back together and translated into English. The study reveals how the thirtheen paintings that interspersed this text were intrinsic to communicating its meaning. This was not the first or last Sanskrit work to be translated to Farsi or be illustrated for a Muslim monarch in Hindustan. The Mughals (and some of the Sultans before them) recognized the significance of Indian knowledge traditions. This book however, provides insight into what went into such translations. Who decided which text should be translated and what governed the decisions?

Egyptianizing figurines from Delos : a study in Hellenistic religion /

This book investigates Hellenistic popular religion through an interdisciplinary study of terracotta figurines of Egyptian deities, mostly from domestic contexts, from the trading port of Delos. A comparison of the figurines' iconography to parallels in Egyptian religious texts, temple reliefs, and ritual objects suggests that many figurines depict deities or rituals associated with Egyptian festivals. An analysis of the objects' clay fabrics and manufacturing techniques indicates that most were made on Delos. Additionally, archival research on unpublished notes from early excavations reveals new data on many figurines' archaeological contexts, illuminating their roles in both domestic and temple cults. The results offer a new perspective on Hellenistic reinterpretations of Egyptian religion, as well as the relationship between "popular" and "official" cults.

Central Asia in the Sixteenth Century /

The book relates to the Uzbegs and provides an account of their origin, antecedents, early exploits, conquests and finally the occupation of Central Asia in the sixteenth century. Since three kingdoms namely the Mughals of India, the Safavids of Persia and the Uzbegs of Turan had been established simultaneously, their mutual relations are a natural part of the study in this book. The tripartite relations among these powers indicate how the medieval diplomacy rehearsed what was to follow in the shape of a Big Game in the later centuries. Due to the lack of adequate material on the Uzbeg history and its culture, even their cultural heritage and contribution to the fine arts had been passed off as being a Persian legacy. The present work presents this warrior group with all their mundane aspirations and medieval imperialist achievements along with a depiction of their keen interest in the sphere of culture. The ruling dynasty of the Uzbegs produced men of talent who possessed command over the sword and the pen alike. Even well-known warriors from amongst them had excelled in mastering and patronizing various fine arts. The florescence of art, learning and culture as ensured by the Uzbegs in the best traditions of Central Asia has also been described in this work alongside their battles and annexations. It is the first work on the history and culture of the Uzbegs in English language published in this country.
