The furniture from Tumulus MM /

: The Furniture from Tumulus MM , The Gordion Wooden Objects, volume 1, is a study of the furniture from the largest tomb at Gordion, Turkey, excavated in 1957 by the University of Pennsylvania Museum. The tomb dates to the eighth century BC and is thought to be the burial of the great Phrygian king Midas or his father. The objects, initially misunderstood, are now identified as nine tables, two serving stands, two stools, a chair, and an open log coffin. Three pieces are ornately carved and inlaid with religious symbols and complex geometric motifs. The wooden objects from Gordion are now recognized as the most important collection of well preserved wooden artifacts excavated from the Near East. Included in this volume are new photographs, reconstruction drawings, and eight scientific/technical appendices. Contributors include: Harry Alden, Burhan Aytuğ, Mary W. Ballard, Robert A. Blanchette, Roland Cunningham, Laure Dussubieux, Patrick E. McGovern, Benjamin Held, Walter Hopwood, Joseph Koles, Lynn E. Roller, Krysia Spirydowicz. \'...this work goes well beyond a typical site-specific object catalogue and makes important contributions to a wide range of scholarly fields, both technical and conceptual, from textile and wood analysis to anthropological and religious studies.\' Elizabeth P. Baughan, University of Richmond "The book succeeds in its main aims of making available every scrap of information about the finds, and it illuminates form, techniques, and function in a most convincing and stimulating manner." The Revolutionary Organisation : Armed Struggle from the Late 18th Century to the Present /

: This is the first comprehensive study of the phenomenon of the armed-struggle revolutionary organisation. The Revolutionary Organisation covers the period from the late 18th century to the present, is global in scope, and discusses organisations inspired by all main ideological traditions: communist, anti-colonialist, nationalist, democratic, Islamist, fascist, and white supremacist. The condition of life-and-death struggle with the state imposes similar patterns of operation upon these organisations, irrespective of their ideological inclinations. This work interprets armed-struggle revolutionary organisations as hybrids of three orientations: an apparatus of professional revolutionaries; an emotional community sustained by ideology, battle comradeship, and ritual; and an instrument of physical force nurturing an heroic organisational ethos.

Debating Economic Policy for South Africa's Post-apartheid Transition: From Scholarship...

: The reasons for South Africa's full and rapid post-apartheid embrace of neoliberal economic policy remain controversial. Drawing on the author's own participation in policy debates, this volume establishes there were alternatives available that were either dismissed or not even considered. Explanations for policy failings have to be sought in determinants such as globalisation, financialisation, capital flight, corporate restructuring and Black Economic Empowerment. The text offers extensive surveys of relevant literature including the developmental state, industrial and social policy, privatisation, trade policy, the Harvard School, comparative experience and the deficiencies in the country's National Development Plan and New Growth Path.

The Winter Missal of Arnold of Rummen : Huis van het boek, Ms. 10 A 14 /

: The Hundred Years' War, the Plague, the van Artevelde uprising, conflict between a count and an aspiring count, Corpus Christi and the Eucharist--these are the context for the enigmatic manuscript studied in this book. Above all, this missal from Ghent is outstanding for its rich and inventive penwork flourishing, given life by the prayer-pulses of the text and enriched by cycles of development. The lowly two-line initial emerges as the primary locus of creative interaction between painting and flourishing. Illumination, produced by a priest and a layman, is notable for its theological richness and is enlivened by distinctive gorgons.

The Nuṣayrī-ʻAlawīs : an introduction to the religion, history, and identity of the leading minority in Syria /

: Friedman offers new and updated research on the Nusayrī-'Alawī sect, today a leading group in Syria, covering a variety of aspects and focusing on the Middle Ages. A century after Dussaud's Histoire et religion des Nosairîs (1900), he reviews the history and religion of the sect in the light of old documents used by orientalists in the nineteenth century, documents that became available in the twentieth century, and later sources of the Nuṣayrī-'Alawī sect published most recently in Lebanon. Also studied in depth for the first time is the question of the identity of the sect through the 'Alawī-Sunnī-Shī'ī triangle.

Instructions for the netherworld : the Orphic gold tablets /

: Orphic gold tables are key documents for the knowledge of rites and beliefs of Orphics, an atypical group that configured a highly original creed and that influenced powerfully over other Greek writers and thinkers. The recent discovery of some tablets has forced a noteworthy modification of some points of view and a review ofthe different hypothesis proposed about them. The book presents a complete edition of the texts, their translation and some fundamental keys for their interpretation, in an attempt at updating our current knowledge on Orphic ideas about the soul and the Afterlife stated in those texts. The work is improved with an appendix of iconographic annotations in which some plastic representations in drawings are reproduced related to the universe of tablets, selected and commented on by Ricardo Olmos.

Between grammar and rhetoric : Dionysius of Halicarnassus on language, linguistics and literature /

: The Greek rhetorician Dionysius of Halicarnassus was active in Augustan Rome. For a long time, modern scholars have regarded him as a rather mediocre critic, whose works were only interesting because of the references to earlier scholars and the citations of literary fragments. By interpreting Dionysius' views within the context of his rhetorical programme, this book shows that Dionysius was in fact an intelligent scholar, who combined theories and methods from various language disciplines and used them for his own practical purposes. His rhetorical writings not only inform us about the linguistic knowledge of intellectuals at the end of the first century BC, but also demonstrate the close connections between philology, technical grammar, philosophy, music studies and rhetoric.

Elitism and the Approach to God /

: Elitism and the Approach to God investigates a historical and cultural dichotomy in European history which has not hitherto been satisfactorily explained Why did so many of the most influential "authorities" of the age insist that the nature and mystery of the divine and of God should not be shared with "the vulgar crowd", that is with the ordinary people, although this appears to be the principal purpose of all other religious teaching throughout the period? Robin Raybould gives examples from the works of more than sixty "authorities" who insisted that the mysteries of the divine should remain secret. He then surveys the attempts of other religious and civic leaders, both pagan and Christian, to investigate, understand and by contrast to share their findings on the nature of God. In a final section he attempts to reconcile these opposing views.

Roman Constantinople in Byzantine Perspective /

: This book studies the research perspective in which the literary inhabitants of Late Antique and medieval Constantinople remembered its past and conceptualised its existence as a Greek city that was the political capital of a Christian Roman state. Initial reactions to Constantine's foundation noted its novel Christian orientation, but the memorial mode of writing about the city that developed from the sixth century recollected the traditional civic cultural heritage that Constantinople claimed both as the New Rome, and as the continuation of ancient Byzantion. This research culture increasingly became the preserve of the imperial bureaucracy, and focused on the city's sculptured monuments as bearers of eschatological meaning. Yet from the tenth century, writers progressively preferred to define the wonder and spectacle of Constantinople in the aesthetic mode of urban praise inherited from late antiquity, developing the notion of the city as a cosmic theatre of excellence.

Anglicanism, Missions and Empire : The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries /

: In Anglicanism, Empire and Missions Rowan Strong offers fresh insights into Christian missions, illuminating both large-scale movements and smaller, local initiatives. Tracing the origins of Anglican missions back to the foundation of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in 1701, the work explores their evolution-from a transatlantic context in the eighteenth century to a truly global presence within the expanding British Empire of the nineteenth century. Contemporary Anglophone mission historiography has often overlooked Anglican missionary endeavours during this period, instead privileging the activism of Evangelical missions. This volume redresses the balance, revealing the far-reaching influence of Anglican mission leaders and societies and restoring their rightful place in the broader history of Christian missions.

America's Great Age of Rhetoric, 1770-1860 : Advocacy, Conceptualization, Institutionalization /

: This book analyzes the advocacy, conceptualization, and institutionalization of rhetoric from 1770 to 1860. Among the forces promoting advocacy was the need for oratory calling for independence, the belief that using rhetoric was the way to succeed in biblical interpretation and preaching, and the desire for rhetoric as entertainment. Conceptually, leaders followed classical and German rhetoricians in viewing rhetoric as an art of ethical choice. Institutionally, a rhetorician such as Ebenezer Porter called for the development of organizations at all levels, a "sociology of rhetoric." Orville Dewey highlighted the passion for rhetoric, calling his times "the age of eloquence."

Fascism's Urban Epicenter : Remaking Rome in the Era of Charismatic Politics /

: This book re-imagines the heart of Rome, animating it with the mass rituals of Mussolini's pioneering regime of twentieth-century totalitarianism. It retrieves from a post-war amnesia the ceremonial events, urban sites, and historic monuments of the Duce's charismatic rulership, demonstrating how architecture and urbanism functioned as instruments of persuasion in fashioning a fevered national identity. Piazza Venezia and its surrounding structures emerge anew as material and spatial exemplars of an illiberal modernity, first as incubator and then as cockpit of a novel form of politics. Here you will experience the frenzied crowd at pavement level as a quintessential phenomenon of Fascist rule.

The Myth of Lycurgus in Aeschylus, Naevius, and beyond /

: Lycurgus, the king of the Thracian tribe of the Edonians, is the hero of the first attested Greek myth about the resistance against the god Dionysus. According to many scholars, Lycurgus was worshipped as a god among the Thracians, Phrygians, and Syrians. His myth might have been used as a hieros logos in the initiations into the 'Bacchic' and 'Orphic' mysteries in Greece and Rome. This book focuses on Aeschylus' tragic tetralogy Lycurgeia and Naevius' tragedy Lycurgus , the two most important texts that shaped the tradition of the Lycurgus myth, and offers a new and, at times, radically different interpretation of these fragmentary plays and related cultural texts.

Preferential Rules of Origin in the Law of the WTO and PTAs : The Challenge of 3D Printing /

: Where does a 3D printed good come from? This book examines preferential rules of origin within the context of advanced manufacturing, focusing on 3D printing. From a foundation in the legal and technical aspects of rules of origin, it explores why 3D printing implies reconsidering how materials, labour, and technology factor into the determination of the origin of a good and the risks and opportunities this brings to producers and traders. The book suggests revisiting rules of origin in PTAs and encourages the WTO to promote incorporating rules or origin and new production methods into a balanced trade framework that supports producers, traders, and consumers globally.

The Political Economy of South Africa's Post-apartheid Transition : The Rejection of Alternatives to Neoliberalism Critical Reconstructions of Political Economy, Volume 7 /

: South Africa's post-apartheid transition has proven disastrous. It is marked by the emergence of a black elite of enriched capitalists out of the globalisation, neoliberalisation and financialisation of the economy in general and of its Minerals-Energy and Financial Complex in particular. By contrast, inequalities, poverty and failing social provision have persisted. Recent attention has shifted to how this disastrous trajectory was initiated, some suggesting a lack of available alternative policy options at the time of transition. This is shown to be false with a full range of progressive alternatives being rejected with corresponding consequences, from "state capture" to electoral defeat.

Evil, spirits and possession : an emergentist theology of the demonic /

: In Evil, Spirits, and Possession: An Emergentist Theology of the Demonic David Bradnick develops a multidisciplinary view of the demonic, using biblical-theological, social-scientific, and philosophical-scientific perspectives. Building upon the work of Pentecostal theologian Amos Yong, this book argues for a theology informed by emergence theory, whereby the demonic arises from evolutionary processes and exerts downward causal influence upon its constituent substrates. Consequently, evil does not result from conscious diabolic beings; rather it manifests as non-personal emergent forces that influence humans to initiate and execute nefarious activities. Emergentism provides an alternative to contemporary views, which tend to minimize or reject the reality of the demonic, and it retains the demonic as a viable theological category in the twenty-first century.

Regulating Migrant Integration in Europe : The Case of Skills /

: Migrants coming to and moving within Europe typically experience inadequate recognition of their professional qualifications and wrongful discrimination. This book describes and critically assesses international, European and EU laws and policies governing migrant integration in Europe, with a particular focus on those concerning the recognition of migrants' skills. It argues that at least certain parts of EU law require clarification, restatement and even reform. The book formulates practical proposals to improve the governance of migrant integration in Europe, making it more coherent, effective and fair.

Pre-Nicene christology in paschal contexts : the case of the divine Noetic anthropos /

: In Pre-Nicene Christology in Paschal Contexts Dragoş A. Giulea re-examines the earliest texts related to the festival of Easter in light of Second Temple traditions. Commonly portrayed as sacrificial lamb, the key actor of the paschal narrative is here designated as heavenly Kabod , Divine Image, King of the Powers, celestial Anthropos, Demiurge, Son of Man, each of these divine names implying a corresponding soteriological function. Dragoş A. Giulea indicates as well that the Greek philosophical vocabulary and certain idioms of the mystery religions inspired new categories which reshaped the traditional way of describing the nature of celestial entities and the epistemological capacities able to access these realities. Thus, the King of the Powers, or the Son of Man, is several times described as a noetic Anthropos, while initiation and noetic perception become the appropriate methods of accessing the divine.

Italian Witchcraft and Shamanism : The Tradition of Segnature, Indigenous and Trans-cultural Shamanic Traditions in Italy /

: Shamanism is thriving as an exotic import and a hidden native tradition in Italy today. This ethnographical work uncovers two faces of Italian shamanism. The first is trans-cultural shamans who creatively adapt rituals and beliefs from indigenous cultures worldwide. Second, extensive fieldwork shows how regional folk magic practices of segnatori and segnatrici constitute a little-known but enduring form of native Italian shamanism. By documenting these parallel worlds, contemporary magic workers appear to be the heirs of ancient local healing traditions. Offering rare insights into vernacular religion, this book vividly portrays shamans' past and present on the Italian peninsula.

Communist Politics in Ireland 1916-1945 : Volume 1: Pursuit of the Workers' Republic in the Post-Connolly and Larkin Era, 1916-1928 /

: Mike Milotte's clear and meticulous reconstruction of Irish communism in the 1920s leaves no stone unturned. He reassesses the communist movement and its key figures in light of previously overlooked or misinterpreted material from the Comintern archives. During the revolutionary era, Roddy Connolly's Communist Party robbed banks to fund its activities, and 20-year-old Connolly engaged in gun-running for the IRA while struggling to maintain control of his fractious party. In a later period of retreat, James Larkin refused to submit to the 'imperialistic' British Communist Party or follow the dictates of Moscow's Stalinist bureaucracy, resisting its policies and practices on instinct.
