Humanitarian law of armed conflict challenges ahead : essays in honour of Frits Kalshoven /

: The collection of essays is entitled `Challenges Ahead'. An ambitious title, but an appropriate one; for the contributors, as the 21st century draws near, ask themselves a number of basic questions about the future of the law in a world undergoing such profound changes. Their reflections will certainly give both cause for hope and reason to fear. This Liber Amicorum dedicated to Professor Frits Kalshoven, is written by specialists who for many years have given their best to the development and promotion of humanitarian law. It will make a significant contribution to the understanding of international humanitarian law. See Less

Interpolation in Thucydides /

: The scraps of hard evidence are carefully sifted from the putative so as to uncover the probable extent and nature of interpolation in Thucydides. This gives a coarse but firm "typology," which may be of some use in the study of other MS traditions, and clarifies hard passages many of which are discussed in depth, so that the book's Index Locorum can be a tool for students of this author. Separate chapters examine evidence given by MS disagreement, by a long inscription, by papyri, by scholiasts, by Valla's translation and more. A chapter analyzes the types of mechanical "interpolation" another, the hypothesis of Hellenistic "editing." Constant close attention is paid to the stemma codicum (discussed also in an appendix) and to the smallest idiosyncrasies of Thucydides' style.

How EU Member States Represent the Common Purpose of Migration Management /

: Since the 'refugee crisis' in 2015, EU Member States have claimed to represent or act on behalf of the Union when regulating migration. Some measures were outside or at the margins of the EU legal order. How can Member States reconcile their double bind as members of the Union and as sovereign nation states? Enriching legal doctrine with constitutional theories, this book argues that EU law is still able to uphold the rule of law, in line with its foundational promise, while also empowering the Member States to govern migration in the common European interest. Crisis management in late antiquity (410-590 CE) : a survey of the evidence from episcopal letters /

: Pauline Allen and Bronwen Neil investigate crisis management as conducted by the increasingly important episcopal class in the 5th and 6th centuries. Their basic source is the neglected corpus of bishops' letters in Greek and Latin, the letter being the most significant mode of communication and information-transfer in the period from 410 to 590 CE. The volume brings together into a wider setting a wealth of previous international research on episcopal strategies for dealing with crises of various kinds. Six broad categories of crisis are identified and analysed: population displacement, natural disasters, religious disputes and religious violence, social abuses and the breakdown of the structures of dependence. Individual case-studies of episcopal management are provided for each of these categories. This is the first comprehensive treatment of crisis management in the late-antique world, and the first survey of episcopal letter-writing across the later Roman empire.

Johann Jakob Wettstein's Principles for New Testament Textual Criticism : A Fight for Scholarly Freedom /

: In Johann Jakob Wettstein's Principles for New Testament Textual Criticism Silvia Castelli investigates the genesis, development, and legacy of Wettstein's criteria for evaluating New Testament variant readings. Wettstein's guidelines, the Animadversiones et cautiones , are the first well-organized essay on New Testament text-critical methodology, first published in the Prolegomena to his New Testament in 1730 and republished with some changes in 1752. In his essay, Wettstein presents a new text-critical method based on the manuscripts' evidence and on the critic's judgment. Moving away from the authority invested in established printed editions, Wettstein's methodology thus effectively promotes and enhances intellectual freedom. The second part of this volume offers a critical text and an annotated English translation of Wettstein's text-critical principles.
