Mapping South-South Connections during the Decolonization Process and Cold War (1810-1990) : The Islamicate and Ibero-American Worlds /

: Mapping South-South Connections during the Decolonization Process and Cold War (1810-1990): The Islamicate and Ibero-American Worlds offers a groundbreaking exploration of the period's historical, political, and cultural networks. Through interdisciplinary approaches-from diplomacy and visual culture to women's studies and political science-this volume highlights state and non-state actors who shaped international relations beyond Euro-American paradigms. Rooted in a research project and major international conference, and enriched by additional contributions, it introduces original studies on underexplored connections between Ibero-America and the Islamicate world, often drawing on primary sources difficult to access due to geographic, linguistic, or political barriers. Contributors are Martín Bergel, Fernando Camacho Padilla, Eudald Cortina Orero, Fernando Escribano Martín, Alberto García Molinero, Mario Matus González, Raffaele Mauriello, Reinaldo M. Sánchez Porro, Juan José Vagni, and Barış Ahmet Yörümez.

Studies in Atatürk's Turkey : the American dimension /

: Nearly all of the previous scholarship on Turkey and U.S. relations cover the Cold War period as well as current affairs with regard to security, strategy, and defense. Hence, the literature abounds with military orientation. This edited volume builds on a historical perspective and focuses on foreign relations, diplomacy, actors, mutual perceptions and reciprocity in diplomatic relations within the framework of the world conjuncture in the 1920s and 1930s. Relations with the U.S.A. have served as a balance in Turkey's Euro-Atlantic policy long before NATO was established. Likewise, re-building relations with the Republic of Turkey served U.S. interests in opening to the Near East and thus breaking away from its much lauded isolationist policy between the two world wars. Thus, the picture that emerges here is just as much a history of U.S. diplomacy as it is of Turkey.

A History of the Arab Component in Ibero-American Architecture /

: This book examines five centuries of Ibero-American architectural history through the lens of its Arabic architectural component. It seeks to illuminate an integral part of Ibero-American culture-one that is frequently ignored and undervalued as merely an exotic influence. Fernando Martínez Nespral's A History of the Arab Component in Ibero-American Architecture stands as a landmark contribution to our understanding of the region's architectural heritage, inviting us to see the world through new eyes and to embrace the rich tapestry of cultures that have shaped our shared landscape. It is a book that will resonate with scholars and enthusiasts alike, inspiring us to explore the hidden corners of history and celebrate the diversity that lies at the heart of Ibero-America's architectural identity. Honour Consciousness, Religion and Gender : Brazilian and Pakistani Lived Experiences in Australia /

: The book explains how honour consciousness shapes the lives of Brazilian and Pakistani women in their countries of origin, and the relationship between honour, religion and gender highlighting the question: is honour consciousness experienced differently by men and women? In this book, I explore how lived experiences of honour consciousness and religion in Brazil and Pakistan are hybridised and operate on a spectrum and are manifested through gender power relations and demonstrated through "moderate" and "extreme" notions of honour consciousness, and how these are transmitted to Australia. These concepts give a new epistemological perspective to the use of Hegel and Foucault within gender studies. See Less

In-Between Identities: Signs of Islam in Contemporary American Writing.

: For the writers and artists in In-Between Identities: Signs of Islam in Contemporary American Writing , contemporary Muslim American identity is neither singular nor fixed. Rather than dismiss the tradition in favor of more secular approaches, however, all of the figures here discover in Muhammad's revelation resources for affirming such uncertainty. For them, the Qur'anic notion of a divine "sign" validates creation, even that creativity born of contrasting if not competing assumptions about identity. To develop this claim, individual chapters in the book discuss Muslim faith in the work of poets Naomi Shihab Nye, Kazim Ali, Tyson Amir and Amir Sulaiman; novelists Mohja Kahf, Rabih Alameddine, and Willow Wilson; illustrator Sandow Birk; playwright Ayad Akhtar; and the online record of the 30 Mosques in 30 Days project.

A history of conversion to Islam in the United States.

: A History of Conversion to Islam in the United States, Volume 1: White American Muslims before 1975 is the first in-depth study of the thousands of white Americans who embraced Islam between 1800 and 1975. Drawing from little-known archives, interviews, and rare books and periodicals, Patrick D. Bowen unravels the complex social and religious factors that led to the emergence of a wide variety of American Muslim and Sufi conversion movements. While some of the more prominent Muslim and Sufi converts-including Alexander Webb, Maryam Jameelah, and Samuel Lewis-have received attention in previous studies, White American Muslims before 1975 is the first book to highlight previously unknown but important figures, including Thomas M. Johnson, Louis Glick, Nadirah Osman, and T.B. Irving.

Bowen disentangles the myriad social and religious factors that produced this unprecedented period of religious transformation.

Women's Rights Under International, American, Islamic, and Egyptian Law: An Irresolvable Conflict : A Cross-cultural Examination of Gender Equality /

: This book presents a comprehensive analysis of women's rights pertaining to abortion, employment equality, and the choice to wear a hijab under international, American, Islamic, and Egyptian law. It challenges the notion that Islamic Shari'a inherently discriminates against women and attributes these perceptions to cultural stereotypes and social norms. Essential reading for anyone interested in gender equality, it offers a fresh perspective on the intersections between law, culture, and women's rights.

Art and Material Culture in the Byzantine and Islamic Worlds : Studies in Honour of Erica Cruikshank Dodd /

: "Dedicated to Erica Cruikshank Dodd, Art and Material Culture in the Byzantine and Islamic Worlds offers new perspectives on the Christian and Muslim communities of the east Mediterranean from medieval to contemporary times. The contributors examine how people from diverse religious backgrounds adapted to their changing political landscapes and show that artistic patronage, consumption, and practices are interwoven with constructed narratives. The essays consider material and textual evidence for painted media, architecture, and the creative process in Byzantium, Crusader-era polities, the Ottoman empire, and the modern Middle East, thus demonstrating the importance of the past in understanding the present"--

Enigmatic charms : medieval Arabic block printed amulets in American and European libraries and museums /

: This is the first comprehensive examination of block printing in the medieval Islamic world. Examples of Arabic block prints have been preserved in various collections across the globe, but they have long been treated as curiosities and oddities. Here, for the first time, a large representative corpus of block prints is examined and illustrated. The first section of the book places Arabic block printing in historical perspective and recounts their rediscovery by modern day scholars. The second section illustrates fifty-five examples of medieval Arabic block printed amulets, provides detailed techical descriptions of each, presents transcriptions of their texts into legible Arabic and offers translations of those texts into English.

Research in the social scientific study of religion.

: Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion publishes empirical and theoretical studies of religion from a wide range of disciplines and from all parts of the globe. This volume has a special section on Islam and Mental Health, an important and neglected area of study. The section draws on work, from six countries, that have applied different theoretical frameworks and empirical methods to examine the link between religion, psychology, and health in very diverse Muslim communities. Other articles examine topics as diverse as spirituality, psychological health, conversion, and the cultural psychology of religion. Disciplines represented include those that draw on qualitative, quantitative, and theoretical methods of study which together represent an important contribution to the contemporary study of religion.
