Opium, Bilsenkraut und Haschisch: Was berichten die vormodernen, arabisch-islamischen Quellen darüber? In diesem Buch werden sämtlich Aspekte von Gebrach und Missbrauch untersucht: Die Verwendung in der klassisch-arabischen Medizin, die Verwendung als Gifte, der juristische Diskurs um ihren Gebrauch und ihr Missbrauch als Rauschmittel. Außerdem werden die ab dem 13. Jh. entstehenden Monografien über Betäubungsmittel betrachtet und es wird der Frage nach einem vormodernen Verständnis von Abhängigkeit nachgegangen. Durch den Betrachtungszeitraum von 1100 bis 1800 werden Trends im Rauschmittelkonsum erkennbar, zahlreiche, sich verändernde juristische Positionen können nebeneinander gestellt werden und es entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild der Rauschmittelkonsumenten in ihren jeweiligen Lebensumfeldern. Opium, Henbane and Hashish: What do the pre-modern Arabic-Islamic sources say about them? This book examines all aspects of use and abuse: Use in classical Arabic medicine, use as poisons, the juridical discourse on their use and their abuse as intoxicants. Furthermore, the monographs on narcotics that were written from the 13th century onwards are examined and the question of a premodern understanding of addiction is pursued. The period from 1100 to 1800 reveals trends in drug consumption, numerous, changing legal positions can be placed side by side and a multifaceted picture of drug users in their living environments emerges.

Sanctifying Texts, Transforming Rituals: Encounters in Liturgical Studies explores the dynamics of Christian ritual practices in their relation to a broader cultural framework. The nineteen essays, written in honour of the liturgist Gerard A.M. Rouwhorst (Tilburg University), study liturgical developments in times of transition, in which religious and cultural changes set the development of worship practices in motion. The chapters in the first part (Texts) concentrate on the close connection between narrative texts and liturgical practice. In part two (Rituals), the focus shifts to the significance of liturgy as it expresses itself in rituals, and to the understanding of ritual acting. This volume focuses on the theological views of the Imāmī Shī'ite theologian Muḥammad b. 'Alī b. Ibrāhīm b. Abī Jumhūr al-Aḥsā'ī (d. after 906/1501), who combined traditional thought of the Mu'tazilites with the philosophical tradition of Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037), with the Illuminationist ( Ishrāqī ) tradition of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī (executed in 587/1191 and his followers, and with the speculative mysticism of Ibn al-'Arabī (d. 638/1204). Ibn Abī Jumhūr moreover attempted to harmonize traditional Shī'ite views which were deeply influenced by the Mu'tazilite traditional with typical Ash'arite notions. The book sets out to investigate thoroughly the impact of the various traditions on the theological views of Ibn Abī Jumhūr. It further investigates the place of this theologian within the development of Shī'ite theological thought. The volume also includes a comprehensive study of Ibn Abī Jumhūr as well as a detailed bibliographical examination of his writings.

Arab Islamic Banking and the Renewal of Islamic Law /

Over the last several decades the Islamic religious movement has steadily gained importance in the Muslim world, manifesting the desire to modify existing institutions so that they conform to the values of traditional Islamic culture. This new book examines the application of such values to modern finance: Islamic banking. It also attempts to address the surprising lack of familiarity with Islamic banking among Western bankers and lawyers. The Author provides a thorough overview of Islamic banking, its devlopmenty, participants, structure, and aims, goes on to study the Islamic legal contracts undelying it, and finally, by way of a cae study of the Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt, assesses the financial viability of Islamic banks. He asserts that Arab Islamic banking is a financial system fundamentally different from the system currently dominant throughout the world, and further, is a viable financial phenomenon. The establishment of Islamic banking, which can be seen as a bold new development model for the Muslim world, has necessitated immense intellectual and financial commitments, as well as an empirical approach emphasizing teh adaptation of both modern finance and medieval Islamic law.
