Holocene prehistory in the Télidjène Basin, Eastern Algeria : Capsian occupations at Kef Zoura D and Aïn Misteheyia /

: Kef Zoura D and Aïn Misteheyia are stratified Capsian escargotières (one openair, the other a rockshelter) in the Télidjène Basin, Eastern Algeria. They were excavated in the 1970s but have remained incompletely published. The sites are the only modern excavations of a Capsien Typique/Capsien Supérieur sequence, demonstrating that this is indeed a chronological progression related to the 8200 cal BP climate event. The technological (introduction of pressure flaking), palaeoeconomic and palaeoecological changes related to this event are examined in these contributions.

Taming the great desert : Adam in the prehistory of Oman /

: Located at the margins of the Rub Al-Khali desert, a place of interactions between settled & nomadic populations, the Adam oasis occupies a pivotal role in the history of Oman. However, almost nothing was known about its foundation & early developments. In 2006, the French Archaeological Mission in Central Oman began the exploration of the area. After 10 years of field research using innovative methods & technologies, much is revealed about the importance of Adam in the prehistory & early history of Oman. This is a monograph about the research carried out at Adam & it includes chapters written by specialists directly involved in the field activities. Each major period is described, including evidence of Palaeolithic occupation, Neolithic settlements, Early & Middle Bronze Age necropolises, Iron Age ritual sites & also an ethnographic study of the traditional water sharing within the oasis.

A Comprehensive History of India : Prehistory of India (Vol. I, Part 1) /

: The prehistoric phase forms the longest period in human history covering a few millennia whereas the knowledge of writing which could be used for the reconstruction of history, was acquired by man only five thousand years ago. The development of human culture can be properly understood only by studying the prehistoric past. The antiquity of man now goes back to 3.6 million years, and since then man has been progressing in the face of all odds. Man the hunted became man the hunter, later acquired the technique of food production which further led to sedentary existence, fashioned artefacts to cope with environment, learnt the use of metals and established trading contacts, finally leading to urbanization. In India the first Stone Age tools were discovered in Tamil Nadu which have recently been dated to 1.5 million years (but could not be included in the present volume as it was too late). The proper study of prehistory received a boost in the post-Independence period. Hundreds of prehistoric sites have since been discovered almost all over the country, even in the north-east which was archaeologically a terra incognita till now. Systematic excavations have been carried out and the data scientifically analysed, stages of evolution of culture from food gathering to food producing have been traced and the further development into the glorious Indus - Harappan - civilization has also been critically reviewed. The volume includes contributions from acknowledged experts in the field. Greater emphasis has been laid on scientific evidence which brings out the role of environment in the evolution of cultures. The study ends with the advent of Aryans which is one of the knottiest of issues in human history.

The rock-art landscapes of Rombalds Moor, West Yorkshire : standing on holy ground /

: This landscape study of the rock-art of Rombalds Moor, West Yorkshire, considers views of and from the sites. In an attempt to understand the rock-art landscapes of prehistory the study considered the environment of the moor and its archaeology along with the ethnography from the whole circumpolar region. All the rock-art sites were visited, and the sites, motifs and views recorded. The data was analysed at four spatial scales, from the whole moor down to the individual rock. Several large prominent and impressive carved rocks, interpreted as natural monuments, were found to feature in the views from many much smaller rock-art sites. Several clusters of rock-art sites were identified. An alignment was also identified, composed of carved stones perhaps moved into position. Other perhaps-moved carved stones were also identified.

Archaeological research at Caution Bay, Papua New Guinea : cultural, linguistic and environmental setting /

: In 2008 intensive archaeological surveys began at Caution Bay, located 20km to the northwest of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. This was followed by the excavation of 122 stratified sites in 2009-2010, and detailed analysis of the well preserved and abundant faunal, ceramic and lithic finds has continued ever since. The Caution Bay Archaeology Project is providing new and exciting contributions to western Pacific prehistory. It has radically expanded the known geographic distribution of the Lapita Cultural Complex to include, for the first time, the southern coast of Papua New Guinea; it has established the relationship of Lapita to later cultural expressions in this area; it has pinpointed the time of arrival of domesticated animals along the southern coast of Papua New Guinea and, by inference, on the larger island of New Guinea.
