This is the second publication in Brill's handbook series The Classical Tradition . The subject of this volume is that group of works of extended prose narrative fiction which bears many similarities to the modern novel and which appeared in the later classical periods in Greece and Rome. The ancient novel has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years not only among students of literature, but also among those looking for new sources on the popular culture of antiquity and among scholars of religion. The volume surveys the new insights and approaches to the ancient novel which have emerged form the application of a variety of disciplines in the recent years. The 25 senior scholars contributing to the volume are drawn from a broad range of European and North American traditions of scholarship. Chapters cover the important issues dealing with the novel, novelists, novel-like works of fiction, their development, transformation, Christianisation and Nachleben, as well as a broad range of matters, from literary/philological to cultural/historical and religious, which concerns modern scholars in the field. Documentary texts are vital to our understanding of many aspects of the ancient world, such as its administration, education, and economy. The value of these texts goes even further however: being autographs, they directly testify to ancient communication practices, a field of study which so far has remained underexplored. In this volume, specialists in the field engage with a broad range of documentary sources. They discuss not only how various modes of communication, such as language, handwriting, and lay-out, are employed in specific contexts of writing, but also how these different modes are interrelated. Building on insights from contemporary social-semiotic theory, the volume makes a case for the establishment of historical social semiotics as a discipline.

200 years ago, on September 8, 1814, in the northern French city of Bourbourg, a boy was born into a family of local entrepreneurs connected to the local political or judicial elite. The young Charles-Etienne Brasseur was lucky to spend days and days in the impressive library of Alexandre Nicolas Muchembled, the son of his godmother. The reading of exciting travel books there mapped out the course of his truly adventurous life to come. Although a rebellious schoolboy, he acquired a huge knowledge in many fields by his omnivorous reading of books and journals. He was also a very curious young man, delving into the private libraries of the local grand families, resulting in him contributing many historical articles to newspapers and learned societies. At the age of 24, while still in high school, he published his first novel. This text tells his story.

"La peinture de l'Égypte ancienne est essentiellement une peinture murale funéraire. C'est à Thèbes, l'actuelle Louqsor, qu'elle connut son plus grand développement, vers 1539-1077 av. J.-C. (Nouvel Empire) et c'est uniquement de cette peinture-là, plus exactement celle qui orne les tombeaux de particuliers, non les hypogées de la Vallée des Rois et de la Vallée des Reines, qu'il est question ici. L'objectif principal de Nadine Cherpion est l'étude du style dans les tombes thébaines. Par style, on entend aussi bien la dominante de couleurs d'un monument que la courbure d'une perruque ou la longueur d'une chute de reins. C'est ce qui fait 'l'esprit' d'une époque, voire d'un règne. Les études sur le style dans la peinture égyptienne sont peu nombreuses et souvent épuisées ou partielles (Wegner 1933, Mekhitarian 1954, Hofmann 2004). D'autre part, un sujet aussi subtil que le style peut sans difficulté être repris à intervalles réguliers avec un regard neuf. Quittant volontiers les frontières de l'égyptologie, l'auteur replace la peinture thébaine dans le cadre de l'histoire universelle de la peinture, ce qui constitue l'un des aspects novateurs de son propos, tout comme la remise à plat de la datation. Bien plus qu'une compilation, ce livre est un travail de synthèse original, réalisé en grande partie sur le terrain. Il est illustré de nombreuses photographies prises, pour la plupart, par J.-Fr. Gout à la demande de l'auteur et souvent inédites. L'histoire du style proprement dite est précédée de quelques pistes de réflexion sur le sens et la lecture des images égyptiennes. The articles collected here are based for the most part on papers read at the Colloquium "The Placita of Aëtius: Foundations for the Study of Ancient Philosophy," held in Melbourne in December 2015.
