The historiography of Ancient Israel is much debated. The various approaches are never void of ideology and some reckon more with the available evidence than others. This volume consists of a set of case-studies that reveal the difficulties that arise when trying to write a history as honestly as possible. This implies that both the archaeology of Ancient Palestine - the finds and their interrogation - as well as the Philosophy of History - their models and their implications - are discussed. The outcome is a variety of approaches that inform the reader of current views on the history of Ancient Israel.

The essays in this volume focus on the interpretation of the Book of Psalms and comparable texts in the Hebrew Bible. A variety of methods is applied to the ancient texts. Some essays concentrate on composition and structure, others on redaction and context. It is of great interest to see that each approach has its strength and its limits: stressing the importance to read the Psalms with a multi-dimensional matrix of methods. By viewing the Psalms as prayers, and thus as expressions of both faith and despair, a perspective on the contents of the ancient hymns and their functions in daily life has been opened. This volume contains various incentives for future research.

The book is remarkable for how Hari Vasudevan combines the skills of a professional historian and the empathy of a son to fashion the story of an era through the personal, modest and smaller scenes of historical change. This book was in manuscript form when Hari passed away, and was finalized for publication by Ravi Vasudevan.

The authors reject the older paradigm which configured the similarities between Qumran and early Christian literature as evidence of "influence" from one upon the other. They raise fresh methodological possibilities by asking how insights from each of these two corpora illuminate the other, and by considering them as parallel evidence for broader currents of Second Temple Judaism. The two authors were jointly responsible for the first version of this Badaga Dictionary (Berlin 1992). It is now extensively revised and expanded to two volumes, and - unique for a Dravidian dictionary - it includes some 2000 local place-names. The vocabulary documented here was partly collected by the two authors during long-term fieldwork, but otherwise came from records of Badaga folk literature. Although there are several dialects of the language, these have not yet been systematically studied; but dialectal variations are nonetheless recorded wherever they are known. An introductory essay examines the status of the language, while another essay outlines the cultural history of the Badaga people. Many entries here include the bibliographic references to the extensive Nilgiri regional literature, and these will prove invaluable to natural scientists, even those not concerned with the Badaga language. Thousands of entries also include notes on religious or cultural beliefs and practices in the Nilgiri Hills.

Many types of tradition and interpretation found in later Jewish and Christian writings trace their origins to the Second Temple period, but their transmission and transformation followed different paths within the two religious communities. For example, while Christians often translated and transmitted discrete Second Temple texts, rabbinic Judaism generally preserved earlier traditions integrated into new literary frameworks. In both cases, ancient traditions were often transformed to serve new purposes but continued to bear witness to their ancient roots. Later compositions may even provide the key to clarifying obscurities in earlier texts. The contributions in this volume explore the dynamics by which earlier texts and traditions were transmitted and transformed in these later bodies of literature and their attendant cultural contexts.
