Curés de campagne, les prêtres coptes-catholiques arbitrent les conflits, arrangent les mariages et luttent contre le sous-développement chronique de la Haute-Égypte délaissée par un État à la fois omniprésent et déficient. Ils défendent la cause des femmes dans une société patriarcale, représentent leurs paroissiens au milieu de tensions confessionnelles croissantes et face aux autorités administratives et politiques.
