The Late Medieval Image Debate in English and French Literature, 1160-1500 : Constructive Iconoclasm /
:
Early modern reformers claimed to reject a superstitious, image-obsessed medieval past-but what if medieval thinkers had already begun to critique sacred images? This book reveals how late medieval literature reimagined breaking images as radical creation, not destruction. Step into the world of Arthurian legends, The Romance of the Rose , and saints' lives, where shattered statues and broken relics generate new meaning. Explore the writings of Chaucer and Julian of Norwich, who grapple with divine truth not by preserving images, but by dismantling and remaking them. This book uncovers a literary self that is dynamic, assertive, and subversive centuries before the Renaissance claims to invent it.

La Ciotat in the Age of Steam (1836-1916) : The Messageries Maritimes and the Making of an Industrial Maritime Society /
:
La Ciotat, a small port-town in the French Mediterranean, underwent a profound metamorphosis during the nineteenth century. Once a small maritime community, it was transformed into the technical base and shipbuilding centre of the Compagnie des Messageries maritimes , France's largest steam navigation company. This book charts the journey of a maritime society through its industrial grown and discovers its economic, demographic, labour, and social changes. Drawing on unpublished archival material, it explores how technological changes and the dominance of a single private shipping company reshaped the town's identity and redefined its relationship with the sea.

The Life Cycles of Counterfactuals in the History of Greek : Aspect, Modality and Typology /
:
We constantly refer to counterfactual events-things that didn't happen but could have-through conditional, wish, and modal constructions. Yet, despite their ubiquity, we still know surprisingly little about how these constructions have evolved across languages and through history. This book breaks new ground by tracing, for the first time, the development of counterfactual systems across different constructions, texts, linguistic registers, and historical stages. Drawing on extensive corpus data from Indo-European languages and nearly three millennia of Greek, it offers the first unified account of counterfactual and avertive constructions as core expressions of non-realization. In doing so, it also proposes a revised model of the counterfactual life cycle-one that integrates semantic, morphosyntactic, and pragmatic dimensions-providing typologists with a powerful framework for exploring how counterfactual expressions evolve across languages.

Tombes d'époque parthe : chantiers de la ville des artisans /
:
Among the hundred or so tombs of post-Alexander date excavated by Roman Ghirshman between 1947 and 1952 on the mound of the "Ville des Artisans" at Susa, six are remarkable for their construction and burial contents. Shortly before his death in 1979, Ghirshman, director of the French "Mission de Suse" from 1946 until 1968, had started to write up his final report. Based on his notes, the authors have engaged to publish these tombs, together with the original plans, drawings and photographs of the burial goods. The grave contents consisted mainly of pottery, but also included glass vessels, figurines, metal objects and other small finds. The study of the material from these large vaulted subterranean structures indicates that they were most likely intended as family tombs, thus remaining in use for several decades and should be dated in the first or second century AD. Similar tombs are known at other sites in the region of Susa, and even in Mesopotamia, e.g. at Seleucia on the Tigris. A synthesis of the evolution in tomb architecture and typology, as well as the burial practices, for the whole site of Susa between the Seleucid and early Sasanian periods (third century BC to third century AD), is also presented, based on the short reports and unpublished excavation notes of Ghirshman, in addition to unpublished reports by his predecessors at the site.

Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement's discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.

Storytelling, Seafaring, and Travel Writing : The Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean /
:
Storytelling, Seafaring, and Travel Writing advances research on Islamic travel writing, with a particular concentration on the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. Ranging from the late antiquity to the present, this collection explores how storytelling, travelogues, and seafaring narratives have contributed to cultural discourses and intellectual traditions. By examining Arab seafaring and travel from new angles and through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary lenses, these essays challenge conventional interpretation. Essential for scholars and researchers in Islamic studies, philosophy, literary analysis, and cultural history, it illustrates how real and imagined narratives have profoundly influenced cross-cultural exchanges and the construction of moral and cultural paradigms over time.

Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights/Annuaire de la convention europeenne des droits de l'homme, Volume 49 A /
:
For victims of human rights violations, human rights defenders are like a beacon of hope shining through the darkness of oppression. Through their work for the protection and realisation of human rights, injustices by authorities are unmasked, public awareness is raised and democratic control is exercised. Their devotion to fighting human rights violations, often at the risk of their own lives, cannot be praised too highly. The colloquy "Protecting and supporting human rights defenders in Europe", held in Strasbourg under the auspices of the Council of Europe, proved an ideal opportunity for frank and constructive exchanges between representatives of civil society and governments from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe on the obstacles encountered by human rights defenders in their work and the responses by the Council of Europe and other international actors to their concerns. This volume contains all the contributions to the plenary session as well as the reports from the three workshops.

Chantiers Régine Robin : Interprétations de l'auteure à l'oeuvre /
:
Régine Robin (1939-2021) was an extraordinary intellectual. A historian and sociologist, philosopher and novelist, linguist and translator of Yiddish, she was the anthropologist of non-places. Continuously, she explored diverse horizons, navigating innovative territories. Enriched by her exiles, from the "lands of death" to Quebec and New York, Robin delved into paths within her personal ruins, laying the foundations for a new writing of the Shoah, without ever yielding to L'Immense Fatigue des pierres . . Her multifaceted work, an unfinished raw project, is imbued with identity issues, on the edge of deconstruction, and in dialogue with the arts and memory practices. A forerunner of the digital age, her "work in progress" continues to inspire her contemporaries.

Domitianè - Kaiè Latomia (Umm Balad) : Le praesidium et les carrières /
:
The excavations carried out at Domitianè/Kainè Latomia (Umm Balad) in 2001‑2003 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs/IFAO have added to our knowledge of the occupation of the Eastern Desert of Egypt in Roman times. This site, located in the Porphyrites massif, has a rock deposit of "granito verde fiorito di bigio" (gray flowered green granite). The attempt to exploit it led to the construction of a small fort by the army under Domitian. It served as a base for the quarry workers. The gate inscription, although very mutilated, indicates a date of construction around 88–92. This early phase does not seem to go beyond the beginning of Trajan’s reign. The praesidium was probably abandoned thereafter, until around 146, when it was reoccupied for only a short period of time, before being abandoned again. The examination of the two quarries provides a lot of information about the organization of the work, but what can be established about their respective histories remains speculative for the most part. The use of Kainè Latomia finally ended in failure, probably due to the poor quality of the stone. However, some blocks were sent to Rome where they were used first of all for the decoration of the Domus Flavia (Flavian Palace) on the Palatine. 4e de couverture .

Language Change in Epic Greek and Other Poetic Traditions /
:
Homeric language fascinates because of its many oddities with respect to other forms of Ancient Greek. From which dialects did this poetic language take shape and develop? In which ways did individual poets alter the language? In this volume you will find twelve cutting-edge studies on linguistic change in oral traditions, with a focus on Early Greek epic but also including Near-Eastern traditions (Biblical Hebrew, Quranic Arabic). Several studies focus on an innovative idea of phonological change occurring within an oral tradition. You will also find studies on the adaptation of linguistic form to meter; formulae and epithets; and contact between different traditions or registers.

Existential Philosophy and Disability : Perspectives /
:
This volume proposes a novel approach to engaging philosophically with disability studies. Taking as a starting point the fact that disability is an integral part of human existence, the chapters in this volume provide insight into situated, lived experiences of disability in articulation with prominent existential philosophers. Historical and theoretical perspectives bring the dominant models of understanding disability today (medical or biomedical and social) into dialogue with existential philosophical perspectives, and thematic contributions provide insight into specific disabled experiences which have historically been underrepresented in philosophy, including mental illness, addiction, severe cognitive/intellectual disability, ADHD, autism, and neurodivergent communication.

New approaches to the study of biblical interpretation in Judaism of the Second Temple period and in early Christianity : proceedings of the Eleventh International Symposium of the...
:
2007 marked the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls. The 11th International Orion Symposium (January, 2007), "New Approaches to the Study of Biblical Interpretation in the Second Temple Period and in Early Christianity," provided a measure of the ways in which the discovery of the scrolls has altered the paradigms for textual and historical studies in the intervening six decades. The papers in this volume address such issues as the connections and distinctions between Jewish interpretation within the Land of Israel and outside of it; between Jewish and Christian exegesis in earlier and later periods; between biblical interpretation in literature and in art; between interpretation and the formation of the biblical canon.

Dar al-Islam -- Dar al-ḥarb : territories, people, identities /
:
This is the first collection of studies entirely devoted to the terminological pair dār al-islām / dar al-ḥarb , "the abode of Islam" and "the abode of war", apparently widely known as representative of "the Islamic vision" of the world, but in fact almost unexplored. A team of specialists in different fields of Islamic studies investigates the issue in its historical and conceptual origins as well as in its reception within the different genres of Muslim written production. In contrast to the fixed and permanent categories they are currently identified with, the multifaceted character of these two notions and their shifting meanings is set out through the analysis of a wide range of contexts and sources, from the middle ages up to modern times. Contributors are Francisco Apellániz, Michel Balivet, Giovanna Calasso, Alessandro Cancian, Éric Chaumont, Roberta Denaro, Maribel Fierro, Chiara Formichi, Yohanan Friedmann, Giuliano Lancioni, Yaacov Lev, Nicola Melis, Luis Molina, Antonino Pellitteri, Camille Rhoné-Quer, Francesca Romana Romani, Biancamaria Scarcia Amoretti, Roberto Tottoli, Raoul Villano, Eleonora Di Vincenzo and Francesco Zappa.

Fascism's Urban Epicenter : Remaking Rome in the Era of Charismatic Politics /
:
This book re-imagines the heart of Rome, animating it with the mass rituals of Mussolini's pioneering regime of twentieth-century totalitarianism. It retrieves from a post-war amnesia the ceremonial events, urban sites, and historic monuments of the Duce's charismatic rulership, demonstrating how architecture and urbanism functioned as instruments of persuasion in fashioning a fevered national identity. Piazza Venezia and its surrounding structures emerge anew as material and spatial exemplars of an illiberal modernity, first as incubator and then as cockpit of a novel form of politics. Here you will experience the frenzied crowd at pavement level as a quintessential phenomenon of Fascist rule.
