Southern India in the Late Nineteenth Century : Volume l, Part ll-A and B: 1880s-1890s (Documents on Economic History of British Rule in India 1858-1947) /

: This volume is part of the Project of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) on documents pertaining to the economic history of British rule in India from 1858 to 1947. The present volume (divided into two parts A and B) on Southern India in the late nineteenth century roughly covers the broad economic history of Southern India during the 1880s and 1890s. It dwells on documents collected from a wide spectrum of human activity in Southern India. They included materials from diverse fields such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, education and sanitation, in each of which the British Raj was involved in collecting information and directing the courses of development in more than one sense. A large part of Southern India was under raiyatwari settlement and an enormous number of documents were available touching on agricultural operations, agricultural appliances, material conditions of agricultural classes, population change, health and mortality, literacy and primary education, values of livestock and cattle diseases, production and export of cash crops, production and supply of food grains, distribution of waste lands, forests and reclamation of jungle lands, and scarcity and famines. These twenty years in the Madras Presidency immediately followed three developments earlier in the century. First, this is the period of the last stage of survey and settlement for what has been called the new ryotwari system. Second, the region experienced different measures of the government for the 'improvement' of the conditions of the people for which Raghavaiyanger spoke so eloquently. Finally, this was also a period of social conflict between the depressed classes like the Paraiyans and landowners of various categories. This volume touches on these crucial developments, and is thus expected to be a valuable source for students of the history of economic and human development of India.

The Upper Cloth Revolt in South Travancore : Theological Interpretation of a Subaltern Movement /

: In nineteenth century Travancore (Kerala), the lower caste women were not allowed to cover their upper body in public. This book is a study of the Nadars who protested and their movement which came to be known as the Upper Cloth Revolt, lasted from 1822 to 1859. It stands as a model movement for the subaltern communities in India. The exceptional stories of resistance and defiance against the dominant ruling class and castes, assertion of rights and liberative ventures opens up new horizons of hope for the communities who are still in the journey of their struggle and tells the subalterns to speak out against subjugation or they will remain powerless. In this revolt, religious faith worked as a source of liberation rather than a source of bondage. Recollecting and interpreting the subaltern history open new pathways of liberation and provide energy to claim new space in societal life.

The Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99) : Supra-cultural Diplomatic Norms and Practices of Peacemaking at the End of the Seventeenth Century /

: This book delivers the first comprehensive analysis of the Peace Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99), challenging traditional Eurocentric views on early modern diplomacy. It demonstrates that peacemaking norms and practices were largely 'supra-cultural'-transcending cultural and religious divides across Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Carlowitz emerges as a significant multi-religious congress that introduced pioneering practices, particularly in ceremonial regulations. By confronting cultural essentialism, provincialising the Westphalian congress-model paradigm, and demythologising Carlowitz as a decisive political turning point-notably marking the adoption of a Western European-style diplomacy by cultural 'outliers' such as the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy-this study offers fresh insights into the complexity and polycentric nature of early modern multilateral diplomacy.

Bose and his Movement : From Nazi Germany to French Indochina /

: The work is based on original sources in the archives and libraries of France, England, India and Vietnam. It recounts the activities of Subhas Chandra Bose and his freedom movement in Germany and brings out certain hidden features of his life as found in the records, with adequate supporting evidence. The study also elaborates on Bose's activities in Southeast Asia, with a special focus on French Indochina. Incidentally it was from Saigon that he disappears from the face of the world. After rejecting the air crash theory in which Bose was supposed to have died as well as the Russian escape theory as untenable for want of factual evidence, the study concludes that Bose never left Saigon or Indochina after 17 August 1945, where he died in mysterious circumstances, before the arrival of the Cabinet Mission to India. The war treasures of Bose were confiscated by the Allied troops in Saigon during a search operation.

Trajectories of religion in Africa : essays in honour of John S. Pobee /

: The book, in the main, discusses issues relating to mission, ecumenism, and theological education and is presented in four sections. The first segment discusses works on ecumenical and theological education and assesses the relevance of the World Council of Churches. Other issues discussed in this segment relate to the interrelationships that exist between academic theology, ecumenism, and Christianity. The World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in 1910, which set the agenda for world-wide mission in a promising manner in the 1920s, is also assessed in this section of the work. The second segment, which covers Religion and Public Space, discusses works that examine the relationships between religion and power, religion and development, religion and traditional religious beliefs, and religion and practices in Africa. The third segment of the book treats Religion and Cultural Practices in African and how all these work out in couching out an African theology and African Christianity. Some of the issues discussed in this section related to African traditional philosophy, spiritism, and the interrelationships that exist between African Christianity and African Traditional Religion. The last segment of the book discusses the issue of African biblical hermeneutics and specifically looks at contemporary hermeneutical approaches to biblical interpretations in Africa.

Critiques : In Defence of Development /

: Critiques presented here in defence of development range across a number of issues, all of which are central to discussions about the desirability or undesirability of this historical process. These include one particular aspect - labour market competition - of the debate about racism, why the reproduction of this ideology is more acute at some historical conjunctures but not others, the same question that can also be asked of the industrial reserve. Equally contentious is the current dominance of populist and postmodern interpretations of rural development, in the misleading guise of new paradigms, the object of which is to exorcise two ghosts: not just development itself, but also Marxist theory about development. : In 2009 the Seventh International Conference of Manichaean Studies was held at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. The 22 selected papers of this volume offer a deep insight into the faith of Manichaean communities ranging from the very beginning of the Third century up to the last traces of worship today. Among others the authors deal with sources from Augustin, John the Grammarian, Ephrem the Syrian and further sources written in Coptic, Sogdian, Middle Persian, Parthian and Chinese. Several studies about Manichaean art and iconography offer a visual impression, which gives a new opportunity for understanding the religion of Light.

: Visions, Prophecies and Divinations is an introduction to the vast and complex phenomena of prophecy and vision in the Spanish and Portuguese Empires. This book is dedicated to the study of the millenarian and messianic movements in the early modern Iberian world, and it is one of the first collections of essays on the subject to be published in English. The ten chapters range from the analysis of Mesoamerican and South American indigenous prophetical beliefs to the intellectual history of the Luso-Brazilian Jesuit Antônio Vieira and his project of a Fifth Empire, passing through new approaches to the long-lasting Sebastianist belief and its political implications.

Changing values, persisting cultures : case studies in value change /

: In 1981, the European and World Values surveys started the empirical investigation of cultural values on a global scale. This volume builds upon the findings of these surveys and analyzes value change in a number of key countries around the globe. The authors track value change and stability in their respective countries during the last decade (the last two decades where data are available) of the 20th century. All authors have been actively involved in value surveys and have a great deal of expertise in countries that they write on. Thus, the volume is a valuable complement to studies that deal with the topic from a global perspective without providing any detail about individual societies. The countries covered are: Argentina, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United States.

Christianity in Latin America /

: Winner of the 2013 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award Christianity in Latin America provides a complete overview of more than 500 years of the history of Christianity in the 'New World'. This book specifically focuses on conquest, exploitation of slave- and forced labor, mission, the formation of the Catholic Church after the council of Trent, Inquisition, popular religiosity, and postcolonial state formation. Attention is also given to the emergence of Protestant immigrant and mission churches, modern forms of exploitation of indigenous and Afro-American workers, Catholic-Protestant antagonisms from the beginning of ecumenism, liberation theology, the proliferation of Pentecostal churches, and the military dictatorships in the second half of the 20th Century. The inclusion of German research in this book is an important asset to the Anglo-American research area, in which information is disclosed that was previously unavailable in English. This book will present the reader with required handbook material on the history of Christianity on the South American continent, based on a tremendous breadth of literature. During his years as Technical Director in Central America, the author studied Mesoamerican Indian Cultures as well as the social conditions of the impoverished sectors of the population. This book is a compilation of the author's extensive research while a lecturer of church history at the Theological Faculty of São Leopoldo (Brazil), as well as during visits to nearly all countries of Latin America, and as a visiting professor in Portugal, Brazil, Nicaragua, Cuba, Argentine and Peru. Thorough research was also completed while lecturing at the University of Cologne (Germany) on Iberian and Latin American History, as well as during his term as professorial chair of Richard Konetzke and Günter Kahle. This publication is an amalgamation of the knowledge and expertise the author gained during research from his entire career.

: Sistan is a region straddling the eastern border between Iran and Afghanistan and on the Iranian side part of the province of Sistan-Baluchistan. Irrigated by numerous rivers coming from the mountains of central Afghanistan, the fields of Sistan produce mostly barley and wheat. Located on the trade routes between north and south and east and west, Sistan's strategic importance has always been recognized. The last conflict involving control over Sistan dates back to the nineteenth century when Persia and Afghanistan disputed the region, the border finally being fixed by the second Sistan Border Commission in 1903-05. There are not many local histories on Sistan, until recently only the anonymous Taʾrīk̲h̲-i Sīstān (5th-7th/11-13th cent.) and Malik Shāh Ḥusayn's Iḥyāʾ al-mulūk (11th/17th century). The history of Sistan published here is especially interesting because it runs until the beginning of the nineteenth century. Until now, we possessed little information beyond the early eighteenth century. Mathnawī, imitating the Shāh-nāma.

“Isisblumen” au Pays de Kouch: Bilan et Perspectives /

: This article summarizes and critically assesses current data about the “Isisblumen,” a term coined by Günther Roeder to describe the way in which the encounter between Egypt and Nubia produced a new religious landscape in the last centuries of paganism. After providing an exhaustive catalogue of the materials, the present author will explore how this motif illustrates the interaction between the two worlds and how it relates to the nomadic populations who had been living along the southern frontier of Egypt, i.e., the Blemmyes and the Noubades. A discussion will also be given on their role in the maintenance of religious activity of Philae.

The fall of the Seleukid empire 187-75 B.C. /

: "The concluding part of John D Grainger's history of the Seleukids traces the tumultuous last century of their empire. The Seleukid dynasty (founded by one of Alexander the Great's generals) ruled an empire which at one time was the largest state on earth. Although it was still a major power following the defeat by the Romans at Magnesia, in the ensuing period their realm was riven by dynastic disputes, secession and rebellion, the religiously inspired insurrection of the Jewish Maccabees, civil war and external invasion from Egypt in the West and the Parthians in the East. By the 80s BC, the empire was disintegrating, internally fractured and squeezed by the expansionist powers of Rome and Parthia. This is a fittingly dramatic and colourful conclusion to John Grainger's masterful account of this once-mighty empire, whose decline and eventual extinction reshaped the ancient world."--Book jacket.

The second cataract fortress of Dorginarti /

: "The best-known sites along the length of the Nile River's Second Cataract are the ruins of Egyptian towns and fortresses occupied during the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. The fortresses were part of Egypt's lines of defense and facilitated trade in this region. Trade, military, and cultural contacts existed between Egypt and Nubia throughout history because many desired commodities-raw materials and animal and plant products-stemmed from lands under Kushite control or beyond to the south, east, and west. Although shipping via the Red Sea and the long haul through the western desert became more common from the later first millennium BC on, the Nile remained a vital conduit regardless of which state or tribal power controlled the regions along it. One of the fortresses in the Second Cataract region, Dorginarti existed in a later era than the better-known Middle and New Kingdom forts. The earliest ceramics found at the site date from the later tenth or early ninth century BC, and those from a later occupation stem from the early eighth century. The latest phase of occupation did not extend far beyond the first phase of Persian dominance in Egypt beginning in the last quarter of the sixth century BC. This volume is the final report of the emergency excavations undertaken at Dorginarti for five months in 1964 by the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute as part of the UNESCO Nubian salvage project necessitated by the building of the Aswan High Dam. Following a description of the fortress's landscape and resources, the book describes Dorginarti's architecture in detail and then presents the selection of artifacts brought back from the Sudan and stored in the Oriental Institute Museum. The picture that emerges from the archaeological record shows the continuing importance of Lower Nubia after the withdrawal of Egyptian control in the late second millennium BC and before the rise of the Kushite empire in the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty"-- Provided by publisher

Shiraz-I Hind : A History of Jaunpur Sultanate /

: South Asian history of early modern period especially the provincial sultanates is a comparatively less explored area. The emergence of Jaunpur Sultanate in the middle Gangetic belt at the close of the fourteenth century enthused a new dynamism in the economy and culture of the region. Its mono-metallic copper based currency enabled this tiny and short-lived kingdom to maintain its economy and richness of culture. The last work on Jaunpur Sultanate had come out about half a century ago (Saeed, 1972) and it covered only political and cultural history. The present work explores how the Sharqi rulers, with constant help and support of their subjects specially the Rajput allies and landlords maintained a regular flow of money that enabled them to give a new shape to the economy of the entire middle Gangetic belt. Not only new crafts were introduced and promoted by them, new market centres also emerged during the period of this vibrant regional kingdom. Along with extensive use of contemporary Persian literature and numismatic sources the author has for the first time meticulously explored contemporary Hindi literature resources like Kirtilata and Ardhakathanaka to delineate his contention. Hindi epic love-lores or Premakhyan like Chandayan, Mrigavati, Madhumalati and others have been for the first time tapped here at length to trace the influence of the Sharqi kingdom in the field of composite culture. It is hoped that the volume will generate enthusiasm for inquisitive scholars, general readers, students and researchers in India and abroad.
