Abū Yazīd al-Basṭāmī (d. ca 234/848), popularly known as "Bāyazīd", remains one of the most celebrated yet controversial figures in the history of Islamic mysticism. This in-depth study of his life and teachings is based on the earliest available sources. The book sets out in detail what is known of Bāyazīd's family, his education, his disciples and associates. It explores the distinctive rhetoric that has made some of his sayings so memorable, and shows how his mode of expression adds a sense of urgency, often drama, to quite conventional doctrines of Sufism. Through the varied corpus of his sayings, this study traces Bāyazīd's teachings concerning many aspects of the mystical path, as well as his reflections on God, the Prophet, heaven and hell. Clementis Alexandrini Paedagogus /

The Paedagogus of Clement of Alexandria is almost completely preserved almost completely in a single manuscript, the famous Codex Arethae, copied in the second decade of the tenth century for Arethas, the Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia. The text was copied from an exemplar in poor shape, to the extent that the codex (P) is full of textual corruptions. Most of the first book of the Paedagogus is lost in P. For this part the author had to rely on two old apographs of P. The only extant critical edition of the text was provided by Otto Stählin in 1905. Although in later editions (1936, 1972) corrections and additions were appended, the author was of the opinion that this predecessor was not attentive enough to the meaning of Clement's text and to the textual problems involved. As a result scholars still lack a reliable critical text of the treatise. Marcovich has tried to improve Stählin's remarkable edition by emending the transmitted text wherever it did not make sense, while relying on Clement's sources and on his lexicon and expression employed elsewhere in his opus.

During the early 20th century, a group of ex-slaves established a frontier society in the no-man's-land of the extreme Southern Highlands of Madagascar. First settlers skilfully deployed a fluid set of Malagasy customs to implant a myth of themselves as tompon-tany or "masters of the land". Eventually, they created a land monopoly to reinforce their legitimacy and to exclude later migrants. Some of them were labelled andevo ("slave" or "slave descent"). The tompon-tany prohibited the andevo from owning land, and thereby from having tombs. This book focuses on the plight of the tombless andevo, and how their ascribed impurity and association with infertility, illness, death and misfortune made them an essential part of the tompon-tany world-view.

The papers in this volume are organized around the ambition to reboot the writing of history about Jews and Christians in the first two centuries CE. Many are convinced of the need for a new perspective on this crucial period that saw both the birth of rabbinic Judaism and apostolic Christianity and their parting of ways. Yet the traditional paradigm of Judaism and Christianity as being two totally different systems of life and thought still predominates in thought, handbooks, and programs of research and teaching. As a result, the sources are still being read as reflecting two separate histories, one Jewish and the other Christian. The contributors to the present work were invited to attempt to approach the ancient Jewish and Christian sources as belonging to one single history, precisely in order to get a better view of the process that separated both communities. In doing so, it is necessary to pay constant attention to the common factor affecting both communities: the Roman Empire. Roman history and Roman archaeology should provide the basis on which to study and write the shared history of Jews and Christians and the process of their separation. A basic intuition is that the series of wars between Jews and Romans between 66 and 135 CE - a phenomenon unrivalled in antiquity - must have played a major role in this process. Thus the papers are arranged around three focal points: (1) the varieties of Jewish and Christian expression in late Second Temple times, (2) the socio-economic, military, and ideological processes during the period of the revolts, and (3) the post-revolt Jewish and Christian identities that emerged. As such, the volume is part of a larger project that is to result in a source book and a history of Jews and Christians in the first and second centuries.

Ernst Meyer was one of the most important figures of the German Communist Party in the Weimar Republic. He was a founding member of the Spartacus League, a member of the KPD Centre after the First World War and party chairman in 1921-22. A passionate defender of the necessity of inner-party democracy against the "ultra-left" leadership around Ruth Fischer and later the Thälmann Central Committee, as well as a supporter of revolutionary realpolitik, Meyer played a significant role in the development of the communist united front strategy and, as a critic of Stalin, later argued against the disastrous thesis of "social fascism". Despite this, Meyer has largely been forgotten. Florian Wilde now traces for the first time the political and private life and work of this disciple of Rosa Luxemburg, highlighting the strategic debates within the KPD and the alternatives to its Stalinisation, inherent in the development of the party.

In the magical texts provided to Egyptians to transition to the afterlife, the mythological precedent set by the rebirth of Osiris created gendered theological principles, which remained central to funerary beliefs throughout Egyptian history. At the point of mummification, the body of the deceased, male or female, temporarily took part in the Osirian rituals and was transformed. As restrictive guidelines for the use of texts started to fall away in the Third Intermediate period, and even more so in the Graeco-Roman period, there were many new, appropriate ways to connect a funerary text to a single person. This article addresses how ancient scribes accommodated allusions and adapted religious content to the text’s owner more extensively in later periods. Rather than the basic grammatical changes found in pharaonic sources, later scribes inserted gendered mythological references and biographical material as textual alterations to create personalized documents for either gender. They creatively pushed the boundaries of individualization as far as possible, but remained within the idealized context of funerary beliefs. Instead, they differentiated male or female gender roles to accentuate the character of the deceased only where appropriate without jeopardizing access to the next life.

The book relates to the Uzbegs and provides an account of their origin, antecedents, early exploits, conquests and finally the occupation of Central Asia in the sixteenth century. Since three kingdoms namely the Mughals of India, the Safavids of Persia and the Uzbegs of Turan had been established simultaneously, their mutual relations are a natural part of the study in this book. The tripartite relations among these powers indicate how the medieval diplomacy rehearsed what was to follow in the shape of a Big Game in the later centuries. Due to the lack of adequate material on the Uzbeg history and its culture, even their cultural heritage and contribution to the fine arts had been passed off as being a Persian legacy. The present work presents this warrior group with all their mundane aspirations and medieval imperialist achievements along with a depiction of their keen interest in the sphere of culture. The ruling dynasty of the Uzbegs produced men of talent who possessed command over the sword and the pen alike. Even well-known warriors from amongst them had excelled in mastering and patronizing various fine arts. The florescence of art, learning and culture as ensured by the Uzbegs in the best traditions of Central Asia has also been described in this work alongside their battles and annexations.
