Lectures on Polish value theory /
:
This book offers a synoptic introduction to an important chapter of Polish 20th century philosophy, by introducing the studies of Kazimierz Twardowski, Tadeusz Czeżowski, Tadeusz Kotarbiński, Władysław Tatarkiewicz, Roman Ingarden, Henryk Elzenberg, Maria Ossowska, and Józef Maria Bocheński and how they contributed to value theory, ethics and aesthetics. These philosophers differed in their more definite interests, methodological approaches, and main results and yet their investigations share a number of characteristic features. Questions of value, considered as extremely vital, are treated with care and precision. In spite of the richness of their insights and an impressive number of detailed results these philosophers refrain from hasty conclusions, trying here, as elsewhere, to conduct their studies in an intellectually and morally responsible way.

The quest for the real Jesus : Radboud Prestige lectures by Prof. Dr. Michael Wolter.
:
The Radboud Prestige Lectures in New Testament 2010 were presented by Prof. Michael Wolter (University of Bonn). His prestige lecture was entitled: 'Which is the real Jesus?'. In this lecture he challenged many of the current views within the historical Jesus research by critically evaluating the approaches in various categories. Afterwards this lecture was presented to a variety of scholars from different disciplines who approach the problem from their particular perspectives, thus bringing a rich texture of insights, apart from engaging critically with Wolter's views. Thus one can appreciate the role the quest for the historical Jesus plays within a wider framework. This resulted in interesting articles that not only deal with historical, but also with philosophical and hermeneutical issues.

Creation stories in dialogue : the Bible, science, and folk traditions : Radbound prestige lectures in New Testament /
:
This book is about creation stories in dialogue, not only between different religious views, but also between current day scientific perspectives. International specialists, like Alan Culpepper, David Christian, John Haught, Randall Zachman, Ellen van Wolde from various disciplines are reflecting on the interface between science and religion relating questions of creation and origin. This multi-disciplinary discussion by some of the leading exponents in this field makes the book unique, not only in its depth of discussion, but also in it wide ranging interdisciplinary discussion. The point of departure of all the contributions is the prestige lecture by Alan Culpepper where he argues for bringing Biblical material into discussion with modern scientific insights relating to creation and origin.

Was 70 CE a watershed in Jewish history? : on Jews and Judaism before and after the destruction of the Second Temple /
:
The destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem in 70 CE, which put an end to sacrificial worship in Israel, is usually assumed to constitute a major caesura in Jewish history. But how important was it? What really changed due to 70? What, in contrast, was already changing before 70 or remained basically - or "virtually" -- unchanged despite it? How do the Diaspora, which was long used to Temple-less Judaism, and early Christianity, which was born around the same time, fit in? This Scholion Library volume presents twenty papers given at an international conference in Jerusalem in which scholars assessed the significance of 70 for their respective fields of specialization, including Jewish liturgy, law, literature, magic, art, institutional history, and early Christianity.

Making history : Josephus and historical method /
:
The encounter between interpretation and history in the writings of Josephus provides the conceptual framework for this collection of essays. The contributions in this volume, which were presented at an international colloquium entitled "Josephus: Interpretation and History" held in Dublin in 2004, are united, not by a single view of Josephus, but by the question of historical method, both ancient and modern. These essays take up aspects of a problem basic to all researchers who would use Josephus for historical purposes, namely: What is the relationship between narratives and history? Organized thematically, the volume reflects a critical engagement with the texts of Josephus, other literary texts, case studies of particular events, and material remains.

Scribes and translators : Septuagint and Old Latin in the Books of Kings /
:
Scribes and Translators is a critical reflection on the textual pluralism as reflected in the book of Kings. The first part of the book examines the diverse texts transmitted by the manuscripts. Special attention is paid to the Antiochene text of the Septuagint that is being edited in Madrid. The second part is devoted to the analysis of Old Latin readings, transmitted by a Spanish family of Vulgate Bibles, with no support in any of the known manuscripts. Finally, the whole evidence is discussed in the frame of the plurality of texts confirmed by the Qumran documents for those books. Based on Old Latin material recently published it sheds light on the text transmission of Kings and on the translation techniques and the history of the Biblical texts in general.

Brill's companion to Leo Strauss' writings on classical political thought /
:
Brill's Companion to Leo Strauss' Writings on Classical Political Thought offers clear, accessible essays to assist a new generation of readers in their introduction to Strauss' writings on the ancients, and to deepen the understanding of those who have already benefitted from his work. Strauss rediscovered esoteric writing. His careful explications of works by classical thinkers- of Socratic political philosophy, pre-Socratic philosophers, and of poets tragic and comic-have therefore opened those works up in a way that had been lost for centuries. Yet Strauss' writings, especially his later works, make considerable demands on any reader. These essays are written by scholars who bring to bear on their reading of Strauss many years of study.

Energy metabolism in animals : Proceedings of the 15th symposium on energy metabolism in animals /
:
At the 15th Symposium on Energy Metabolism in Animals, 10-16 September 2000 in Denmark, a wide variety of subjects came up for consideration covering both basic aspects and applied animal science. The symposium was organised around four main session themes:- I Methodology and techniques- II Environmental and dietary aspects- III Tissue and whole body metabolism- IV Growth, lactation and maintenance This time, different from before, the papers are dealing with all kind of animals, i.e. cattle, sheep, goat, pig and poultry, fish, ostrich, emu, mink, dog, cat, yak, rat, mice and man and not restricted to farm animals only. Professor Jens Christian Skou, Nobel Prize Winner showed up for the keynote lecture "The identification of the sodium-potassium pump, and its significance", an interesting contribution about the importance of the Na/K pump in animal physiology and energy metabolism. Results of a workshop on "Stable isotopes and indirect calorimetry" are reported as well as a "Glossary of terminology in animal and human energy metabolism". To focus the attention to new developments summaries of discussions per theme are included. The book provides a wide variety of readers in animal science and nutrition a lot of information to be used in research, teaching, extension service and animal production practice.

The ancient traditions before the VIIIth century concerning the final fate of Mary constitute a large and very complex group. The literary traditions on the dormition and the assumption represent the major part of this dossier. We can only situate and classify them if we also study their topological traditions. The present volume completes the volume published in 1995 ( Dormition et Assomption de Marie. Histoire des traditions anciennes ). It is the final result of a research started in 1986. In the current compilation we regroup thirteen contributions published between 1992 and 2007. These different articles, rectified and completed, present a fundamental contribution, literary and doctrinal: particularly those on the history of the research, the Lives of the Virgin and the Apocalypses of the Virgin.

Jewish and Christian communal identities in the Roman world /
:
Jews and Christians under the Roman Empire shared a unique sense of community. Set apart from their civic and cultic surroundings, both groups resisted complete assimilation into the dominant political and social structures. However, Jewish communities differed from their Christian counterparts in their overall patterns of response to the surrounding challenges. They exhibit diverse levels of integration into the civic fabric of the cities of the Empire and display contrary attitudes towards the creation of trans-local communal networks. The variety of local case studies examined in this volume offers an integrated image of the multiple factors, both internal and external, which determined the role of communal identity in creating a sense of belonging among Jews and Christians under Imperial constraints.

Gregory of Nyssa: Homilies on the Our Father. An English Translation with Commentary and Supporting Studies : Proceedings of the 14th International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa (...
:
Gregory of Nyssa's Homilies on the Our Father are the second explanation of this central prayer of Christian worship in Greek Antiquity. Composed at the end of the 4th century, these five homilies offer a spiritual and pastoral commentary of the Pater Noster. The present volume, edited by Matthieu Cassin (Paris), Hélène Grelier-Deneux (Paris) and Françoise Vinel (Strasbourg), offers introductory materials, a new English translation, the first edition of the 15th century Latin translation by Athanasios Chalkeopoulos, together with five studies that form a commentary for the different homilies, and nineteen shorter contributions on various aspects of the text. The contributors envisage the text according to exegesis and theology, but also to philosophy, rhetoric and history of Christian communities.

Theology in Intercultural Design /
:
Among the consequences of the all engulfing process of globalisation is the experience that not only it promotes interdependence among peoples, folks, cultures and religions, but it also creates problems and tensions. The assignment of a thoughtful and practice-oriented accompanying of this development poses itself subsequently. From this background different lectures are being conducted in different places; research initiatives as well as projects are started and executed while several publications are featuring. Visible here is the fact that although there abound rich reservoirs of knowledge, there is still no clarity as to the contents and the theoretical and methodical contrasts that are yet to be examined.

Early Christian Epistolarity /
:
Many surviving early Christian writings are in the form of letters, some sent by and to those named, others imagined. What did the authors, copyists, and later collectors intend by authoring or reworking letters , as opposed to other genres? How did the first or subsequent readers respond, differently perhaps than to a novel or history? In her Radboud Prestige Lectures in New Testament, published in this volume, Judith Lieu explores these questions by drawing on the concept of 'epistolarity.' Her lectures are followed by chapters by leading experts in the field who engage her work from different angles, finding points of contact and potential conversation between different texts and authors, together with possibilities for further exploration and application.

Rashīd al-Dīn Hamadānī (d. 718/1319) came from a Jewish family in Hamadan. His grandfather had been a courtier of Hūlāgū Khān (r. 1256-65) while his father was a court pharmacist. Rashīd al-Dīn converted to Islam when he was about 30 years old. Trained as a physician, he started his career under the Il-khanid Abāqā Khān (r. 1265-82), rising to the rank of vizier under Ghāzān (r. 1295-1304), Öljeitü (r. 1304-16) and Abū Saʿīd Bahādur Khān (r. 1316-35) who had him executed in 718/1319. Rashīd al-Dīn is the author of the first world history ever, the Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh . Besides he also wrote a considerable number of texts on many different subjects. As a promotor of learning, Rashīd al-Dīn founded a cultural complex called the Rabʿ-i Rashīdī. Among the people invited there was the author of the present series of lectures on Sufism. Held seasonally between 712/1312 and 718/1318, these lectures survive thanks to an attentive student.

Philo of Alexandria and Greek myth : narratives, allegories, and arguments /
:
In Philo of Alexandria and Greek Myth: Narratives, Allegories, and Arguments, a fresh and more complete image of Philo of Alexandria as a careful reader, interpreter, and critic of Greek literature is offered. Greek mythology plays a significant role in Philo of Alexandria's exegetical oeuvre. Philo explicitly adopts or subtly evokes narratives, episodes and figures from Greek mythology as symbols whose didactic function we need to unravel, exactly as the hidden teaching of Moses' narration has to be revealed by interpreters of Bible. By analyzing specific mythologems and narrative cycles, the contributions to this volume pave the way to a better understanding of Philo's different attitudes towards literary and philosophical mythology.
