Les fatimides et la mer (909-1171) /

The Fatimids (10th - 12th centuries C.E) are known to have been the first Shiite caliphal dynasty and to have founded Cairo, the city that became their capital in 973 when they left Tunisia for Egypt. During their reign, the Fatimids built an effective war fleet that inflicted several defeats on Christian navies. This is the first study on the Fatimid naval force and, more generally, on the role of the sea for the Fatimids whose territories touched both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The documentation presented in this study demonstrates how, in the course of two centuries, this Ismaeli dynasty set up a maritime policy and developed a communication strategy in which their control of the sea helped legitimize their universalist claims against competing powers. J.-C) sont connus pour avoir été la première dynastie califale chiite et pour avoir fondé Le Caire qui devint leur capitale à partir de 973 lorsque la dynastie quitta la Tunisie actuelle pour s'installer en Egypte et prendre possession d'un empire qui s'étendait de l'Algérie orientale jusqu'à la Syrie en passant par la Sicile et certains territoires de la péninsule arabique. Durant leur règne, ils disposèrent d'une flotte de guerre efficace qui infligea plusieurs défaites aux marines chrétiennes. Au-delà de la chronologie des batailles navales, aucune étude n'existait sur le rôle de cette force navale et plus généralement sur le rôle de la mer pour les Fatimides dont les territoires touchaient à la fois la Méditerranée et la mer Rouge. La documentation met pourtant en évidence que sur durant plus de deux siècles, les Fatimides mirent en place une politique maritime qui dépassait largement les considérations militaires. Ils développèrent ainsi une stratégie de communication dans laquelle la mer jouait un rôle majeur pour à la fois légitimer les prétentions universalistes de cette dynastie ismaélienne face à des pouvoirs concurrents et pour lui permettre de survivre.

Ce recueil permet de comparer la diversité de leurs questionnements dans les sociétés polythéistes ou monothéistes de la Méditerranée antique. Il interroge premièrement la construction rituelle des signes au sein des institutions divinatoires ; deuxièmement, des phénomènes naturels spontanés, qui, apparus hors de toute institution, ont néanmoins valeur de présages ou d'avertissements ; troisièmement, l'intentionnalité manifestée à travers l'intervention divine dans l'histoire des peuples ou les vies singulières ; quatrièmement, l'épistémologie des signes dans des élaborations philosophiques ou théologiques qui éclairent la tension entre données oraculaires et contrôle ritualisé des signes, entre données révélées et argumentations raisonnées visant à neutraliser les injonctions du destin. How to foresee the unknown and master the unexpected? Ancient people tried to answer those questions by interpreting signs considered as divine messages. In this volume, the writers compare and examine this manifold questioning in the polytheistic and monotheistic societies of the ancient Mediterranean Sea. In the first place, it is shown how signs were ritually constructed within instituted practice of divination ; second, how, although some spontaneous natural phenomena appeared out of any instituted context, may nevertheless constitute omens or monition ; third, how the gods' intervention may reveal a sort of intention in the course of national history or individual life ; finally, the essays study the epistemology of signs at work in some philosophical or theological elaborations, which may enlighten the tension between oracular evidence and ritual control of signs, and between revealed facts and reasoning arguments intending to neutralize the injunctions of the divine.

Les << Magasins nord >> de Thoutmosis III sont un ensemble de huit salles accessibles par le couloir périmétral de l'enceinte en grès du temple d'Amon-Rê à Karnak. Bâties par Thoutmosis III pendant son règne autonome après la disparition de la reine Hatchepsout, ces salles forment un complexe à l'accès restreint qui a subi plusieurs transformations architecturales dont les plus remarquables sont la modification de son accès ouest au cours du règne même de Thoutmosis III et la décoration d'une des salles du complexe par Ptolémée XI Sôter II près de quatorze siècles après sa construction. Cet ensemble entretient des liens étroits avec les autres structures du règne de Thoutmosis III dont l'Akh-menou, nouveau cœur cultuel du temple d'Amon-Rê, mais aussi avec les zones d'accès et le centre du temple de Karnak. The "Northern Storerooms" of Thutmosis III are a set of eight chambers accessible through the corridor within the sandstone enclosure of the Temple of Amun-Re at Karnak. Built by Thutmosis III during his autonomous reign after the death of Queen Hatshepsut, these chambers form a complex with restricted access that underwent several architectural transformations. Among the most remarkable are the modification of its western entrance during Thutmosis III's own reign and the decoration of one of the chambers by Ptolemy XI Soter II, nearly fourteen centuries after its construction. This complex maintains close connections with other structures from the reign of Thutmosis III, including the Akh-menu, the new cultic center of the Temple of Amun-Re, as well as the access areas and the central part of the Karnak Temple. This volume presents, for the first time, all of the epigraphic material, largely unpublished, from this sector (including facsimiles, hieroglyphic texts, and translations), along with complete photographic coverage, undertaken after the completion of a major restoration and conservation programme in 2016.

Domitianè - Kaiè Latomia (Umm Balad) : Le praesidium et les carrières /

The excavations carried out at Domitianè/Kainè Latomia (Umm Balad) in 2001‑2003 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs/IFAO have added to our knowledge of the occupation of the Eastern Desert of Egypt in Roman times. This site, located in the Porphyrites massif, has a rock deposit of "granito verde fiorito di bigio" (gray flowered green granite). The attempt to exploit it led to the construction of a small fort by the army under Domitian. It served as a base for the quarry workers. The gate inscription, although very mutilated, indicates a date of construction around 88–92. This early phase does not seem to go beyond the beginning of Trajan’s reign. The praesidium was probably abandoned thereafter, until around 146, when it was reoccupied for only a short period of time, before being abandoned again.The examination of the two quarries provides a lot of information about the organization of the work, but what can be established about their respective histories remains speculative for the most part. The use of Kainè Latomia finally ended in failure, probably due to the poor quality of the stone. However, some blocks were sent to Rome where they were used first of all for the decoration of the Domus Flavia (Flavian Palace) on the Palatine. 4e de couverture .

Francis Schmidt also played an essential role in transmitting to a new generation of scholars the complex issues and debates concerning the Dead Sea scrolls and Qumranic research. The Aghlabids and their Neighbors focuses new attention on this key dynasty. "17 novembre 1869 : le canal de Suez est inauguré en grandes pompes, en présence de l'impératrice Eugénie. Mais la construction du canal, débutée en 1859, ne s'est pas faite sans heurts. Ferdinand de Lesseps et la France ont en effet bataillé durant de longues décennies avant de convaincre l'Empire ottoman, dont l'Égypte n'était qu'une province, de son bien-fondé. Accusée d'être un instrument de colonisation de l'Égypte au profit de la France, la Compagnie universelle du canal de Suez, "État dans l'État", est très critiquée par l'Empire ottoman. Celui-ci craint qu'un canal maritime séparant matériellement l'Égypte du reste de l'Empire rende illusoire la souveraineté du sultan sur ce territoire, et ouvre la porte à une domination occidentale inacceptable. Clément d'Alexandrie (150-215 Ap. J.-C.) est l'un des penseurs les plus brillants des premiers siècles chrétiens. Son enseignement, tout autant pétri de la Bible que de la pensée grecque, nous révèle la nature des débats aux premières heures de l'expansion du christianisme. Ce livre aborde un sujet peu étudié à ce jour, à savoir sa pensée sur l'Église. C'est pourtant un sujet récurent de ses ouvrages, où il réfléchit longuement sur l'Église à partir de l'être et la mission du Logos divin. L'analyse du discours de Clément sur l'Église permet donc de revisiter les intuitions principales de sa christologie tout en apportant un éclairage sur sa perception de l'identité chrétienne à une époque où celle-ci est encore en construction. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement's discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.
