The Double Voice of Her Desire : Texts by Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes /

To the attentive listener, women's texts speak with a "double voice." Women are quite capable of telling a conventional story, reflecting the expectations of the dominant culture. However, at the same time they tell their own, muted story. Such stories are fragments of resistance, and anyone who has experience of living on the margins can track them down. Such was the view of Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes (1943-1994). This is a comprehensive collection of the late scholar's groundbreaking work in feminist biblical interpretation, in English translation. The essays document Van Dijk-Hemmes' development and show how her work relates to contemporary developments in feminist thinking. There is a Foreword by Mieke Bal, an in memoriam by Athalya Brenner, and an overview of van Dijk-Hemmes' extensive output of books and articles completes the volume. Fokkelien van Dijk-Hemmes taught Women's Studies and Old Testament at the University of Utrecht. Her pioneering work of feminist interpretation, tragically cut short, was highly influential both inside and outside the Netherlands. Translated by David E. Orton

Around twenty years ago, with the digitisation of almost every facet of life, most businesses started including their own review system, so that their products could be rated and reviewed. This was the first wave of online reviews, called online consumer reviews (OCRs). The emergence of the smartphone and the proliferation of social media in the 2010s, however, resulted in a new ecosystem in which peers could share their assets, review other peers and be reviewed. This is the second wave of online reviews, or the emergence of online peer reviews (OPRs). This book explores the three differentiating discursive practices found in BlaBlaCar in Spanish and in English (emotive, relational and metacommunicative) as representative of this new wave. It demonstrates that OPRs have characteristics of their own, and proposes a new definition that captures the latest developments in online reviews in the context of peer collaboration.

In the Arab world, people belong to kinship groups (lineages and tribes). Many lineages are named after animals, birds, and plants. Why? This survey evaluates five old explanations - "totemism," "emulation of predatory animals," "ancestor eponymy," "nicknaming," and "Bedouin proximity to nature." It suggests a new hypothesis: Bedouin tribes use animal names to obscure their internal cleavages. Such tribes wax and wane as they attract and lose allies and clients; they include "attached" elements as well as actual kin. To prevent outsiders from spotting "attached" groups, Bedouin tribes scatter non-human names across their segments, making it difficult to link any segment with a human ancestor. Young's argument contributes to theories of tribal organization, Arab identity, onomastics, and Near Eastern kinship.

Was there, in different periods of Egyptian history, a clearly defined political and cultural western border? How was the western limit of Egyptian territory perceived and experienced by the central power and local populations? Keeping these questions in mind, the proceedings of the international conference held in Cairo on 2-3 December 2017 explore the western margins of Egypt along four lines: 1) definition, conception, representation; 2) occupation, control, administration; 3) economy; 4) populations, networks, religion. They allow us to sketch a portrait of a key region of Egypt from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Once the phase of territorial fixation of the Egyptian state was completed, the low population density in the Western Delta and the absence of a real threat did not encourage the definition and defense of an actual western border. However, the arrival of new Libyan groups at the gates of Egypt during the Ramesside period was a turning point. The emergence of the Saite Dynasty placed this region in a new dynamic--that of border with the Greek world and pioneer front--which prefigured the development of this territory under the Ptolemies. During the Roman period, Egypt was part of an empire that extended much further west and whose decision-making center was outside the country, which changed the status of the western limit. Still, the nomadic incursions into the Great Oasis at the end of the period show that the question of the frontier remained an issue. This issue continued after the Arab conquest when Egypt became again part of a vast empire.

Violence can be physical and psychological. It can characterize personal actions, forms of group activity, and abiding social and political policy. This book includes all of these aspects within its focus on institutional forms of violence. Institution is also a broad category, ranging from formal arrangements such as the military, the criminal code, the death penalty and prison system, to more amorphous but systemic situations indicated by parenting, poverty, sexism, work, and racism. Violence is as complex as the human beings who resort to it; its institutional forms pervade our relational lives. We are all participants in it as victims and perpetrators. The chapters in this book were written in the hope that violence can be explicated, even if not fully understood, and that such clarification can help us in devising less violent forms of living, even if it does not lead to its total abolition. The problem of the limits of science is twofold. First, there is the problem of demarcation, id est, the boundaries or "barriers" between what is science and what is not science. Second, there is the problem of the ceiling of scientific activity, which leads to the "confines" of this human enterprise. These two faces of the problem of the limits - the "barriers" and the "confines" of science - require a new analysis, which is the task of this book. The authors take into account the Kantian roots but they are focused on the current stage of the philosophical and methodological analyses of science. This vision looks to supersede the Kantian approach in order to reach a richer conception of science.

In international law interpretation is ubiquitous. However, whereas in the case of treaty interpretation, this process has been codified in Articles 31-33 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, the interpretation of rules of customary international law has remained largely unexplored. This monograph demonstrates not only that rules of customary international law can be interpreted but also that they have continuously been interpreted by international and domestic courts. Through an examination of this case-law, the various methods of interpretation of customary rules and their limits are identified as well as the similarities and differences with the rules of treaty interpretation.
