Muslims in British local government : representing minority interests in Jackney, Newham, and Tower Hamlets /

This book investigates whether the presence of Muslim representatives in city councils improves substantive representation of Muslim interests across 32 London boroughs. It theorizes that descriptive representation of minorities leads to improved responsiveness to minority interests contingent on the percentage of minority representatives, the proportion of minorities in the district, level of party fragmentation among minority representatives, their political incorporation, and the electoral competitiveness of the district. It uses multivariate regression analysis to test the effects of these five explanatory variables. It validates the quantitative findings with case studies of three London boroughs while also investigating the role of representational styles of Muslim councillors on their political attitudes and behavior.

Islamic foundations ( waqf , pl. awqāf ) have been an integral part of Yemeni society both for managing private wealth and as a legal frame for charity and public infrastructure. This book focuses on four socially grounded fields of legal knowledge: fiqh , codification, individual waqf cases, and everyday waqf -related knowledge. It combines textual analysis with ethnography and seeks to understand how Islamic law is approached, used, produced, and validated in selected topics of waqf law where there are tensions between ideals and pragmatic rules. The study analyses central Zaydī fiqh works such as the Sharḥ al-azhār cluster, imamic decrees, fatwā s, and waqf documents, mostly from Zaydī, northern Yemen.

The Indian federal system has been dynamic in accommodating political and societal changes since its constitutional blueprint was drawn in 1949-50. However, there has been a fundamental transformation in the operative principles of federalism particularly during the last decade or so. This volume examines how Indigenous theatre and performance from Oceania has responded to the intensification of globalisation from the turn of the 20th to the 21st centuries. It foregrounds a relational approach to the study of Indigenous texts, thus echoing what scholars such as Tui Nicola Clery have described as the stance of a "Multi-Perspective Culturally Sensitive Researcher." To this end, it proposes a fluid vision of Oceania characterized by heterogeneity and cultural diversity calling to mind Epeli Hau'ofa's notion of "a sea of islands." Taking its cue from the theories of Deleuze and Guattari, the volume offers a rhizomatic, non-hierarchical approach to the study of the various shapes of Indigeneity in Oceania. It covers Indigenous performance from Aotearoa/New Zealand, Hawai'i, Samoa, Rapa Nui/Easter Island, Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. Each chapter uses vivid case histories to explore a myriad of innovative strategies responding to the interplay between the local and the global in contemporary Indigenous performance. As it places different Indigenous cultures from Oceania in conversation, this critical anthology gestures towards an "imparative" model of comparative poetics, favouring negotiation of cultural difference and urging scholars to engage dialogically with non-European artistic forms of expression.

The years between 1680 and 1720 saw the intensification of the regional slave trade in West Africa. Previous scholarship has focused almost exclusively on Africans and Afro-descendants as brokers in the region, placing Europeans as Atlantic intermediaries. Europeans as Coastal Brokers in the West and West-Central African Slave Trade (1680-1720) argues that not only was European mediation in Africa deeply interwoven with endogenous trade networks, but also that it was eagerly desired by the powerful potentates of the hinterland as a means of increasing their political and economic power over the region. Examining the interconnected interests of coastal authorities and Europeans, this book demonstrates that Europeans were the key brokers in the diversification of slave trade routes to the shore.
