A "Community of Peoples": Studies on Society and Politics in the Bible and Ancient Near East in Honor of Daniel E. Fleming draws together a diverse community of scholars to honor the career of Daniel E. Fleming as a historian of the Bible and ancient Near East. Together, these scholars participate in a dynamic historical enterprise, each one positioning themself along a Middle Eastern spatial-temporal continuum stretching from the Old Babylonian to the Persian periods. Each contributor attempts to touch a sliver of ancient history, whether a particular person or community, a text or visual image or scribal process. They do so through a diversity of methods and disciplines, which together reflect the possibilities and promises for history writing. The Harvard Semitic Studies series publishes volumes from the Harvard Semitic Museum. La Ciotat, a small port-town in the French Mediterranean, underwent a profound metamorphosis during the nineteenth century. Once a small maritime community, it was transformed into the technical base and shipbuilding centre of the Compagnie des Messageries maritimes , France's largest steam navigation company. This book charts the journey of a maritime society through its industrial grown and discovers its economic, demographic, labour, and social changes. Drawing on unpublished archival material, it explores how technological changes and the dominance of a single private shipping company reshaped the town's identity and redefined its relationship with the sea.

The title of this volume is 'Administration, Prosopography and Appointment Policies in the Roman Empire'. The papers contained in this volume focus on all three of these themes, within the context of the impact of the Roman empire upon the regions it dominated. The papers contained in the first part of the volume concentrate on appointment policies, career structures and the impact of military presence and recuitment, esp. in border provinces, in the period of the Principate (27 B.C. - A.D. 284). In the second part of the volume the reader will find papers on Roman jurists, administrators, and bureaucrats and articles about administrative procedures, the administration of justice, rescripts and the influence of learned juridical treatises in various regions of the Roman empire. The last section of the volume presents contributions on the impact of the Roman imperial administration and appointment policies on communal rights and politics, the composition of local councils, local administrative structures, Romanisation, and social mobility of regional and local notables in various provinces of the Roman Empire.
