David, a member of the Platonic school in Alexandria in the sixth century, is credited with several commentaries on Aristotle's logic: those commentaries, and their Armenian translations, form the subject of this book. An introduction, which discusses David and his place in the Greek and the Armenian traditions, is followed by a series of studies of the relations between the Greek texts and their Armenian translations: the aims are, first, to assess the value of the translations for the constitution of the original Greek, and secondly, to consider the ways in which the Armenian translations adapted the texts to suit their new readership. More generally, the book is concerned with the ways in which Greek thought was exported abroad-to Armenia and to Syria: it is required reading for anyone who is interested in the circulation of ideas between east and west. This work deals with Aristotle's Topics , a textbook on how to argue successfully in a debate organised in a certain way. The origins of the three branches of logic can be found here: logic of propositions, of predicates and of relations. Having dealt with the structure of the dialectical debates and the theory of the predicables, the central notion of the topos is analysed. Topoi are principles of arguments designed to help a disputant refute his opponent and function as hypotheses in hypothetical syllogisms, the main form of argument in the Topics . Traces of the crystallization of their theory can be found in the Topics and Analytics . The author analyses a selection of topoi including those according to which categorical and relational syllogisms are constructed.

In From Onomatodoxy to Aesthetics: Aleksei Losev's Concept of Symbol , Teresa Obolevitch analyzes the category of symbol in broad historical and philosophical context, with a focus on Losev's exploration of symbol over his prolific and tragic career. A survivor of the Stalinist camps, Losev is recognized as the "last classic" of Russian Silver Age philosophy. This book addresses Losev's critical role within the divisive debate over onomatodoxy (imiaslavie), or the divine name, which occupied the minds of Russian thinkers in the early nineteenth century. Obolevitch presents the ancient and patristic roots of onomatodoxy and elucidates its importance for Losev's work in a range of fields, including aesthetics, mathematics, philosophy of language, and religion. Models of Desire in Graeco-Arabic Philosophy : From Plotinus to Ibn Ṭufayl /

This study argues that late ancient Greek and medieval Islamic philosophers interpret human desire along two frameworks in reaction to Aristotle's philosophy. The investigation of the model dichotomy unfolds historically from the philosophy of Plotinus through the Graeco-Arabic translation movement in 8th-10th century Baghdad to 12th century al-Andalus with the philosophy of Ibn Bāǧǧa and Ibn Ṭufayl. Diverging on desire's inherent or non-inherent relation to the desiring subject, the two models reveal that the desire's role can orient opposed accounts of human perfection: logically-structured demonstrative knowledge versus an ineffable witnessing of the truth. Understanding desire along these models, philosophers incorporated supra-rational aspects into philosophical accounts of the human being.

State and Peasant in the Ottoman Empire studies the dynamics of Ottoman peasant economy in the sixteenth century. First, it shows that contrary to the conventional wisdom about the 'stationariness'of the Asian agrarian economies, Ottoman peasant economy witnessed substantial growth in response to population increase, urban commercial expansion and to increased taxation demands. Second, the book argues that economic development did not take place independently of political structures, of the state. This meant that in the light of the fiscal and legitimation concerns of the Ottoman state and contrary to the assumptions of the models of economic development, changes in population and in commercial demand did not result in the disruption of the integrity of the small peasant holding as the primary unit of production. The book develops these arguments in the context of a detailed empirical study of the economic trends, of the state rules or institutions that embodied the relations of revenue extraction, and of exchange in Ottoman Anatolia.
