The Rome Statute and Islamic Law : A Comparative Analysis with Special Reference to Saudia Arabia /

: This book examines in depth the degree of compatibility and incompatibility between the general principles and jurisdiction of Islamic law and international criminal law (the Rome Statute). It discusses the controversy related to the non-ratification of the Rome Statute by some Islamic and Arab countries. The author analyses arguments that maintain that Islamic law cannot be compatible with international criminal law, and makes it clear that there are no fundamental differences between the principles of Islamic law and the principles of international criminal law. The book considers Saudi Arabia as a case for reference. See Less

Onomasticon of the Hittite pantheon.

: The Onomasticon of the Hittite Pantheon by Ben van Gessel was published in 1998. In three years time the work has established itself as the ultimate comprehensive reference work concerning the Hittite pantheon. With the publication of Part Three, the main work will be made accessible to a wider circle of all those interested in the ancient Near East. Moreover, it will prove to be an indispensable key to the abundance of information until now only to be found scattered throughout the Onomasticon . The easy-reference glossaries contain all the (word )forms quoted from Hittite texts in the Onomasticon . A special feature of these glossaries is that they not only give the (English) meaning of the (word) forms, but that they also indicate, where appropriate, in relation to which deities they may appear. Also of importance are the lists of personal and geographical names and festivals included. Part Three further includes additions resulting from new discoveries and corrections of earlier references in the Onomasticon .

Excavations of Gebel Adda (lower Nubia) ancient nubian leatherwork : part I sandals and shoes /

: The excavations of Gebel Adda (Lower Nubia) by the American Research Center in Egypt's Nubian Expedition (1962-1966), directed by Nicholas B. Millet) yielded large quantities of objects, including an impressive collection of leatherwork. The finds, which show a remarkable degree of preservation, date from the Meroitic Period (about AD 100-400) through the Christian (AD 641-1400) and Islamic Periods (AD 1400), and were mainly recovered from tombs. The large variety of leather objects, currently housed in the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, clearly indicates the high degree of the leatherwork technology of the Nubian people. Among the objects are the famous (post-)Merotic quivers, scabbards, and wrist guards. The present work - the first of two volumes on the leatherwork - however, presents only the footwear (sandals and shoes). It includes detailed descriptions, accompanied by colour photographs and, where necessary, drawings. The preliminary analysis, in which the Gebel Adda material is comprehensively compared with the finds from other sites, discusses topics such as typological development, diachronic change, and geographical variations. Dr. Andre J. Veldmeijer, Visiting Research Scholar of the American University in Cairo, has worked as an archaeologist in Egypt since 1995, specializing in, among other things, leatherwork and footwear.-- publisher's website. : 271 pages : illustrations (some color), 28 cm. : Includes bibliographical references and index. : 9789088904127

The imperial cult in the Latin West. studies in the ruler cult of the western provinces of the Roman Empire /

: This volume analyzes the priesthood of the provincial cult in every province of the Latin west where evidence has survived in the period from Augustus down to the mid third century. Particular attention is paid to the epigraphic record, notably the Testimony of honorific statues especially at provincial centres, but discussion also focusses on the origin and background of provincial priests, their office and duties, and their careers both before and after holding provincial office. Of special interest are the sixteen tables that list the main facts preserved by the epigraphic record, also a concluding overview that summarizes the principal features of the institution including the office of priestess and the role of administrative officials. Some fifty plates illustrate the text.

The imperial cult in the Latin West : studies in the ruler cult of the western provinces of the Roman Empire. Vol. 3, Provincial cult. Part 1, Institution and evolution /

: This volume deals with the institution and evolution of imperial cult at the provincial level from the earliest foundations under Augustus down to the mid-third century A.D. On the basis of detailed examination of evidence from the different regions or provinces of the Latin west the emphasis of provincial cults can be seen to move first from the living emperor and Roma to the deified emperor, then from a composite cult of living and deified dead emperors to a renewed emphasis on the reigning emperor in the late second and early third centuries. Analysis is based primarily on the study of epigraphical, numismatic and iconographic evidence, generously illuminated by plates. The volume concludes with a series of essays summarizing the main lines of development in the light of various related issues.

The list of Abbreviated Titles comprises all Abbreviations used throughout the four Parts while the Bibliography consolidates the books and articles cited in the four sets of References. Lastly, the list of errata in the Corrigenda consists mostly of typographical errors that escaped notice in the original manuscript.

Audacity of the spirit /

: Audacity of the Spirit by A.F. Losev (1893-1988) dares us to think holistically, dialectically. Translated from the Russian original Дерзание духа (Politizdat Moskva, 1988) by Peter R. Weisensel and Vitali I. Betaneli, the book falls into three parts: the dialectical method; Losev's application of dialectics to history and culture; and his personal reflections on studying philosophy. Losev's insatiable intellectual curiosity probes a remarkable variety of areas. Positions he considers, though, are not always easily reconcilable, as with Marxism-Leninism and Orthodox Christianity. In Losev's conception of culture, however, culture and the intrinsic unity of any given cultural order is the common element that underlies everything living, even the order's incompatibles. The given culture cannot be reduced to any single position nor to all of them taken together. Audacity of the Spirit is an introduction to dialectics for beginners, but it is also a major philosopher's summing-up of his reflections to a non-specialized audience.

Essays in the philosophy and history of logic and mathematics /

: The book is a collection of the author's selected works in the philosophy and history of logic and mathematics. Papers in Part I include both general surveys of contemporary philosophy of mathematics as well as studies devoted to specialized topics, like Cantor's philosophy of set theory, the Church thesis and its epistemological status, the history of the philosophical background of the concept of number, the structuralist epistemology of mathematics and the phenomenological philosophy of mathematics. Part II contains essays in the history of logic and mathematics. They address such issues as the philosophical background of the development of symbolism in mathematical logic, Giuseppe Peano and his role in the creation of contemporary logical symbolism, Emil L. Post's works in mathematical logic and recursion theory, the formalist school in the foundations of mathematics and the algebra of logic in England in the 19th century. The history of mathematics and logic in Poland is also considered. The Poetics of Aristotle and the Tractatus Coislinianus : a bibliography from about 900 till 1996 /

: The bibliography of Aristotle's Poetics by Cooper and Gudeman, most welcome in 1928, has now become antiquated, even for the period it covers. The present one registers all editions, translations, commentaries and studies bearing on the Poetics or the major concepts that have been associated with it, correctly or incorrectly, from 1481 up till 1996. Moreover, a survey is given of the medieval translations and commentaries written in the Orient and in Europe. Special attention has been given to the reviews. The oldest one registered dates from 1697. The second book of the Poetics being lost, publications related to the Tractatus Coislinianus , which partly rests on Poetics II , have been included. There are seven indices. Especially those on passages and subjects should prove to be useful instruments. In the author's text Greek nouns and adjectives have been transliterated.

The Battle of Mohács /

: The story of the battle of Mohács and of King Louis II's dramatic escape, only to meet his end by falling from his horse and drowning in the stream of Csele, is well-known. These traumatic events have been seen as symbolizing the fall of the independent Hungarian Kingdom and the dawn of an age of oppression. This volume presents new research on these events and their interpretation, focusing on topics such as battlefield reconstruction, troop involvement, firearm use, and later political use and abuse of the memory of the battle. Contributors are Pál Fodor, Péter Gyenizse, Erika Hancz, Máté Kitanics, Sándor Konkoly, Dénes Lóczy, Tamás Morva, Norbert Pap, Júlia Papp, Gábor Szalai, and Gábor Varga.

A catalogue of the Turkish manuscripts in the John Rylands University Library at Manchester

: During the six hundred years of its existence, innumerable of manuscripts with, mostly, Turkish texts were produced in the Ottoman Empire. These are mainly preserved in libraries in the countries that once were part of that extended empire; a lesser number of such manuscripts had their origin in central Asia, Persia and India. From the sixteenth century in particular, interest for these handwritten books increased in Europe and found their way to the libraries of scholars, book collectors and universities. The John Rylands University Library is one such repository of Turkish manuscripts of both Ottoman and wider Asian provenance. Most of these manuscripts, among which a number of unique, rare and luxuriously produced items, were originally gathered by a rich mine owner, the 25th Earl of Crawford. In this book, the collection is for the first time described in a detailed and systematic way.

Portrayals of Antigone in Portugal : 20th and 21st century rewritings of the Antigone myth /

: Portrayals of Antigone in Portugal gathers a collection of essays on the Portuguese drama rewritings of this Theban myth produced in the 20th and 21st centuries. For each of the cases analysed, the Portuguese historical, political and cultural context is described. This perspective is expanded through a dialogue with coeval European events. As concerns Portugal, this results principally in political and feminist approaches to the texts. Since the importation of the Sophoclean model is often indirect, the volume includes comparisons with intermediate sources, namely French (Cocteau, Anouilh) and Spanish (María Zambrano), which were extremely influential on the many and diversified versions written in Portugal during this period.

In the Remains of Progress : Utopia and Suffering in Brazilian Popular Entrepreneurship /

: This book proposes an ethnographic approach to popular entrepreneurship based on the experience of the wageless life in Brazil. It starts from the historical premise that self-employment is at the heart of the popular way of life, whose main characteristic is the desire for autonomy. In turn, the global discourse of self-realisation carries a strong attempt at modernisation aimed at young people, but which is also capable of embarrassing older people. From the shopping streets, social entrepreneurship and Pentecostal cults, this process is giving shape to political conflicts that are redrawing the sense of community in São Paulo, the country's largest city.
