In Kosovo: History in Maps , the story of Kosovo's history is told through maps which take us through space and time, from antiquity to the present day. Placed at the intersection of the Ottoman, Habsburg, and Serbian Empires, Kosovo attracted the attention of cartographers and mapmakers from various imperial and cultural circles. Each of them embodied and circulated ideas of Kosovo and its geographical space in their own way, creating different visions of state power, historic memory, identity, imperial and national borders, and territoriality. In this regard, the book delineates the geographical reality of Kosovo in different contexts, namely war space, historical space, travel space, and sacred space. Moreover, Kosovo: History in Maps examines the diffusion of geographical knowledge and maps on Kosovo, contributing to the growing historiography on the circulation of knowledge and the translation of culture.

This volume contains the published proceedings of the conference on the Dead Sea Scrolls, held at Provo, Utah, July 15-17, 1996. Forty-three articles, all dealing with various aspects of the Scrolls, are placed under the following divisions: Technology, Editions and Analyses of Texts, The Qumran Community, Calendar, Levi and the Priesthood, Messianism and Eschatology, and Wisdom and Liturgy. The volume offers the most recent scholarship on a number of issues and topics pertaining to the Qumran community, newly translated biblical and non-biblical texts, and technological advances that assist scholars and researchers in accessing and studying the scrolls. The section that pertains to technology, for example, focuses on DNA techniques to analyze Scroll fragments and an imaging radar system that has archaeological applications to Qumran and its environs. A Place in the World : New Local Historiographies in Africa and South Asia /

Local histories, written and published by non-academic historians, constitute a rapidly expanding genre in contemporary non-Western societies. However, academic historians and anthropologists usually take little notice of them. This volume takes a comparative look at local historical writing. Thirteen case studies, set in seven different countries of sub-Saharan Africa, India and Nepal, examine the authors, their books and their audiences. From different perspectives, they analyse the genre's intellectual roots, its relationship to oral historical narratives, and its relevance and impact in local and wider arenas. Local histories, it turns out, pursue a variety of agendas. They (re)construct local and communal identities affected by rapid social change. Often, they (re)write history as part of cultural and political struggles. Openly or implicitly, all of them place local communities on the map of the world at large.
