Myth, History and Archaeology : Essays and Reviews, 2000-2025 /
:
A bronze mirror of the fourth century BC shows a she-wolf suckling infant twins. You may think that's a familiar story, but who are the other figures in the scene, and why is there a lion so prominent in the foreground? The image typifies the problems involved in studying the history and evolution of mythic stories in the ancient world. This collection of studies, prompted by a famous archaeologist's quasi-historical reinterpretation of the Romulus legend, seeks to achieve greater clarity by avoiding abstract concepts like 'oral tradition' or 'cultural memory' and paying close attention to what the primary sources presuppose.

Holistic Qumran : trans-disciplinary research of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls /
:
Much of the previous sixty years (1949-2009) have been devoted to the cleaning of the Dead Sea scrolls, their piecing together and their translation. The present volume is a scientific study of the various archaeological relics that have been found in the three units at Qumran: The settlement, the caves with the scrolls and the cemetery. With the aid of neutron activation of Qumran's pottery we established its human relations with neighboring sites, by radio carbon dating we placed the relics in their time frame, by DNA we study the provenance of the animal hides that served the scribes as parchment. The ink is studied for examining the degradation processes that started when the scrolls were written, 2000-2300 years ago.

Yoga and Yantra : Their Interrelation and Their Significance for Indean Archeology /
:
The author asks to what extent a knowledge of the concepts of yoga may prepare the way to a better understanding of Indian archaeology. The yoga at the basis of this study is that which forms the core of the Tantras . In the first chapter the author surveys the system of Tantrik yoga. He then continues with a discussion of the various forms of yantras , that is all the means employed by yogis in their meditational exercises as aids to the concentration of thought. The author provides in-depth studies of ritual objects of the Lamaistic cult in Tibet and Nepal, the sacred cemeteries of Nepal, and pantheons in Java and Bali. See Less

Girirāj Kiśor's Yātrāeṁ : A Hindi Novel Analysed /
:
This book is one of the first to present a detailed analytic study of a novel written in Hindi. Its in-depth analysis of the complete text of Kiśor's Yātrāeṁ (1971) is based on narratology and a study of connotations and cultural background. The extensive introduction - especially into narratology - and the inclusion of the integral Hindi text of the novel together with a Hindi-English glossary and word index allow the reader, not only to follow the analysis in all its detail but also to use the book as a practical example of how modern Hindi prose literature may be analysed. Yātrāeṁ is no exception to a trend in modern Hindi novel writing to focus on individual experience and on love and sexual relationships, but its concentration on the way in which a man experiences his wedding night and honeymoon lends it a special character. It is the groom himself who narrates and interprets the couple's lack of success in fully consummating the marriage. Since he is personally involved in the events, his account is highly subjective, and it is left to the reader to find out what could be the real cause of the events. Reviews of Yātrāeṁ propose diverse interpretations, which are all based on intuitive readings. This book shows how a systematic analysis of the text leads to a different interpretation. The analysis highlights how conscious and unconscious ideas about gender roles, activeness and passiveness, dominance, passion, control, and balance determine the man's behaviour towards the woman. As observed in the Introduction, the philosophy of disinterested action as taught by the Bhagavadgītā is found to be relevant even today.
