This volume deals with Islamic sects in the Near East such as the Alevis (Turkey), Druzes (Libanon), Alawis (Syria), Ahl-i Haqq (Iran, Iraq) and Shabak (Iraq), which have in common a syncretistic system of belief with a strong Shi'ite influence, as well as secrecy and endogamy. The contributions in this volume focus on the present situation of these communities, their relation to mainstream Islam, their involvement in national and ethnic politics, aspects of faith and rituals, the relevance of sacred texts, modes of religious and social transformation, and the recent revival of Alevism. In view of the new visibility of these formerly "hidden" sects and their increasing social and political importance, this volume provides important information for all scholars interested in the religious and political situation of the region.

Les classiques continuent de fasciner les artistes de la scène, qui ne cessent de s'interroger sur la manière dont ces œuvres sont susceptibles de rejoindre le public. En inscrivant ce livre à l'enseigne de la célèbre formule « faire théâtre de tout » du metteur en scène français Antoine Vitez, nous désirons montrer la persistance d'une problématique qui oblige à tenir compte de l'évolution des formes dramatiques mais aussi du régime culturel plus vaste, numérique en ce qui concerne le XXIe siècle, au sein duquel s'insère la transposition de ces œuvres sur la scène. Les études rassemblées dans ce volume jettent un regard croisé sur les pratiques scéniques contemporaines qui recourent à des textes littéraires au Québec et en Europe, tout en éclairant plusieurs enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques. Classics from prior centuries continue to fascinate theatre artists. They never stop thinking of ways to stage these works to reach actual audiences. By referring, in the title of our book, to French director Antoine Vitez's famous quote "make theatre with everything", we want to point out the persistence of a problematic causing artists to not only take into account the evolution of dramatic forms, but also the broader cultural regime, digital for the 21st Century, within which these transpositions take place. The studies gathered in this volume bring a fresh perspective to the contemporary performing practices in Quebec and in Europe using literary texts, and illuminate many theoretical and methodological issues in the process.

The nine contributions in The Trade in Papers Marked with non-Latin Characters initiated by Anne Regourd (edition) approach global history through the paper trade. They cover, in addition to a paper used in 14th C Persia, papers used in Africa (Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tunisia) and Asia (the Ottoman Levant, Mecca, Persia, Russia, and Yemen) during the 19th-20th C. Primarily based on paper examination and quantitative data, the book invites us to treat papers as a source, and provides tools to determine the production of manuscripts in space and time for the area of interest. This methodology offers new insights on the competition between suppliers to the various markets particularly in respect of the emergence of import-export trading companies. Le commerce des papiers à marques à caractères non-latins , dont Anne Regourd (éd.) est à l'initiative, a pour projet de traiter d'histoire globale par le commerce du papier. Les neuf contributions réunies ici font apparaître un premier exemple de ce papier, persan, dès le xive s. sous les Moẓaffarides et, principalement, des papiers utilisés en Afrique (Éthiopie, Nigéria, Tunisie) et en Asie (Levant ottoman, La Mecque, Perse, Russie et Yémen), aux xixe et xxe s. S'appuyant sur l'observation des papiers et des données quantitatives, le livre invite à prendre le support de l'écrit comme source de l'histoire du commerce et donne des instruments pour déterminer la production de manuscrits dans l'espace et le temps pour une aire définie. This book delivers the first comprehensive analysis of the Peace Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99), challenging traditional Eurocentric views on early modern diplomacy. It demonstrates that peacemaking norms and practices were largely 'supra-cultural'-transcending cultural and religious divides across Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Carlowitz emerges as a significant multi-religious congress that introduced pioneering practices, particularly in ceremonial regulations. By confronting cultural essentialism, provincialising the Westphalian congress-model paradigm, and demythologising Carlowitz as a decisive political turning point-notably marking the adoption of a Western European-style diplomacy by cultural 'outliers' such as the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy-this study offers fresh insights into the complexity and polycentric nature of early modern multilateral diplomacy.

The introduction gives the methodological principles of the work and explains how to use it. Tables enable the student to visualise all the parallels quickly. Notes explain the choices that have been made. In order to study the laws, it is essential to compare them. This book facilitates research into the pentateuchal collections and lists, as it does into special prescriptions, rites or institutes.
