Making religion : theory and practice in the discursive study of religion /
:
Discursive approaches to the study of religion have received a lot of attention recently. Making Religion brings together leading theorists in the field who explore the theoretical and practical dimensions of the analysis of religious discourse. The volume provides an overview of current debates in the field, extends and improves upon contemporary theories and methodologies, and contributes to the discipline more broadly by flagging the importance of this emerging field of research. The combination of theoretical reflection and practical application of discourse analysis as a tool to study religion opens up new perspectives for future research.

Without any doubt Gersonides on method and knowledge /
:
Gersonides-Rabbi Levi ben Gershom (Provence, 1288-1344)-was a multifaceted thinker. Endowed with his original and critical mind, he did not accept the authority of his predecessors but investigated every matter for himself. His extraordinary attention to method-both of inquiry and of writing-stands out clearly in his own work and in his reading of certain biblical books. The eight articles on Gersonides' thought and method collected in this volume address four main topics: Gersonides' methods of inquiry and composition; the use of introductions in his own works and in biblical books; his method in the supercommentaries on Averroes; and his methods of biblical exegesis. \'Klein-Braslavi's (sic) book...is highly recommended for all libraries that take seriously philosophy, the life of the mind and cognition.\' David B. Grounding Critique : Marxism, Concept Formation, and Embodied Social Relations /
:
Grounding Critique: Marxism, Concept Formation, and Embodied Social Relations argues that marxism must have a robust understanding of embodied social relations, such as race, gender, and sexuality, in order to produce the knowledge necessary for transformative social change. Tanyildiz subjects two important strands of marxist social theory -marxist-feminism and social reproduction theory- to a methodological examination and demonstrates their shortcomings. Focusing on these strands' critiques of intersectionality as a moment of crystallization in concept formation, Grounding Critique explores alternative ways of using Marx's method to understand contemporary human praxis. Faith in African Lived Christianity - Bridging Anthropological and Theological Perspectives offers a comprehensive, empirically rich and interdisciplinary approach to the study of faith in African Christianity. The book brings together anthropology and theology in the study of how faith and religious experiences shape the understanding of social life in Africa. The volume is a collection of chapters by prominent Africanist theologians, anthropologists and social scientists, who take people's faith as their starting point and analyze it in a contextually sensitive way. It covers discussions of positionality in the study of African Christianity, interdisciplinary methods and approaches and a number of case studies on political, social and ecological aspects of African Christian spirituality.

Socio-economic Relations in Ptolemaic Pathyris : A Network Analytical Approach to a Bilingual Community. Volume 1. /
:
This study tackles pertinent questions about daily life and socio-economic interactions in the late Ptolemaic town of Pathyris (186-88 BCE) through an empirically grounded network analysis of 428 Greek and Demotic documents associated with 21 archives from the site. The author moves beyond traditional boundaries of Egyptological and Papyrological research by means of an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology - zigzagging back and forth between archaeological field survey, close reading of ancient texts, formal methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and explanatory theories and concepts borrowed from economics and other social sciences. This is volume 1 of a two-volume set.

Galen and Chrysippus on the soul : argument and refutation in the De placitis, books II-III /
:
This volume deals with books II and III of the On the Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato by the medical scientist and philosopher Galen of Pergamum (129-c. 210 CE ). In these books Galen offers an extensive critique of Stoic psychology, quoting a large number of passages from the otherwise lost treatise On the Soul by the great Stoic philosopher Chrysippus. This first full-scale study of Chrysippus' mode of argumentation considers the fragments both in their Galenic context and in relation to Stoicism in general. A separate discussion is devoted to Galen's aims and methods and the traditions he is indebted to. Though designed as a foil for the treatment of Chrysippus, it can also be read by those interested in Galen's methodology for its own sake.
