Western philosophy has created a false dichotomy. A better solution can be found in an organic philosophy that functions through micro-macro interactions. According to biologists, the twentieth century was the century of the gene, while the twenty-first century is destined to be the century of the organic. Micro and Macro Philosophy attempts to establish such a view in philosophy: by highlighting micro-macro patterns found in history, it seeks to design new ways of "organic thinking" in the human sciences.

Ancient Roman trade was severely hampered by slow transportation and by the absence of a state that helped traders enforce their contracts. In Trading Communities in the Roman World: A Micro-Economic and Institutional Perspective Taco Terpstra offers a new explanation of how traders in the Roman Empire overcame these difficulties. Previous theories have focused heavily on dependent labor, arguing that transactions overseas were conducted through slaves and freedmen. Taco Terpstra shows that this approach is unsatisfactory. Employing economic theory, he convincingly argues that the key to understanding long-distance trade in the Roman Empire is not patron-client or master-slave relationships, but the social bonds between ethnic groups of foreign traders living overseas and the local communities they joined.

English Bazar in Colonial Bengal : An Urban History of Malda (1813-1947) /

India has a long history of urbanization from the time of the Indus Valley civilization to the modern age, and it bears specific characteristics relating to their historical circumstances. The urban centre that developed in Malda district of West Bengal during the period specified is categorically different from urbanization in the pre-colonial period. The urbanization at Lakhnauti in Bengal is archaeologically not very notable. The second urbanization that started there in the thirteenth century was the beginning of the process of urbanization in Malda and was identical to the features of any Muslim capital centric urban centre. The first British urban establishment that took place in the district during the pre-colonial phase originated with the establishment of the commercial factory of the East-India Company at English Bazar in 1680. However, a new type of urbanization took place after the formation of the Malda district in 1813. The nucleus of the administrative headquarters was located in the pre-colonial English settlement area popularly known as English Bazar. The gradual expansion of the city necessitated by administration and the need to accommodate the influx of migrants over the years from different areas of Bengal, led the district to assume a definite shape after establishment of the English Bazar Municipality in 1869. This book is an important contribution to the literature on the urbanization of colonial India at the micro level. It discusses conceptual as well as theoretical issues relating to urbanization, urban experiences of pre-colonial and colonial India, and the origin and growth of the English Bazar town.

The present study deals with the comparison of rural settlements, aiming to compare developments in various settlements of the Iberian Peninsula during the Roman era. This is to show to what extent structures in the hinterland show parallels or are different from one another and to explore the causes of these similarities and differences. Aspects of the Roman economy must be taken into account as well as the micro-regional influences of pre-Roman settlement or topographical conditions. To achieve this goal, various aspects of rural settlements such as the dating, size or status of a place and its location and environmental conditions are analyzed and related. Archaeological, geographic and statistical methods of investigation are used. These methods, along with the complete resulting data, are fully disclosed in order to allow the comparison to be extended to other regions.

Working with the past : towards an archaeology of recycling /

Recycling is a basic anthropological process of humankind. The reutilization of materials or of ideas from the past is a process determined by various natural or cultural causes. Recycling can be motivated by a crisis or by a complex symbolic cause like the incorporation of the past into the present. What archaeology has not insisted upon is the dimensional scale of the process, which operates from the micro-scale of the recycling of the ancestors' material, up to the macro-scale of the landscape. It is well known that there are direct relations between artefacts and landscapes in what concerns the materiality and mobility of objects. An additional relation between artefact and landscape may be the process of recycling. In many ways artefact and landscape can be considered as one aspect of material culture, perceived at a different scale, since both have the same materiality and suffer the same process of reutilisation.
