Dreambooks in the Middle Ages : A Global Perspective /

: This volume explores the intricate art of interpreting dream symbols by tracing the evolution of oneirocritical traditions across Asia, the Middle East, and the Latin West. Spanning the classical, medieval, and modern periods, it reveals how diverse cultures have used dreambooks to translate imagined realities into personal insight. A collection of scholarly essays, this volume vividly portrays humanity's enduring fascination with dreams as profound sources of knowledge-rooted in the past, experienced in the present, and foreshadowing the future. Also included is the "Conspectus of the Western Manuscripts and Early Printed Editions of the Somniale Danielis ," an essential reference for next generations of scholars. Contributors are Valerio Cappozzo, Gabriela Cerghedean, Lászlo Sándor Chardonnens, Lorenzo DiTommaso, Boyda Johnstone, Jesse Keskiaho, Pierre Lory, Bronwen Neil, Steven Oberhelman, Lotte Reinbold, and Brigid E. A History of Roman Literature (2 vols.) : From Livius Andronicus to Boethius with special regard to its influence on world literature /

: Michael von Albrecht's A History of Roman Literature, originally published in German, can rightly be seen as the long awaited counterpart to Albin Lesky's Geschichte der Griechischen Literatur. In what will probably be the last survey made by a single scholar the whole of Latin literature from Livius Andronicus up to Boethius comes to the fore. 'Literature' is taken here in its broad, antique sense, and therefore also includes e.g. rhetoric, philosophy and history. Special attention has been given to the influence of Latin literature on subsequent centuries down to our own days. Extensive indices give access to this monument of learning. The introductions in Von Albrecht's texts, together with the large bibliographies make further study both more fruitful and easy.

Doing Justice to a Wronged Literature: Essays on Arabic Literature and Rhetoric of the 12th-18th Centuries in Honour of Thomas Bauer /

: Doing Justice to a Wronged Literature, a Festschrift for the Arabist and Islamicist Thomas Bauer, includes 17 essays by established academics on various themes and aspects of Arabic literature and rhetoric of the Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods (12th-18th centuries).
Doing Justice to a Wronged Literature is a Festschrift for the Arabist and Islamicist Thomas Bauer. It includes 17 essays by established academics on various themes and aspects of Arabic literature and rhetoric of the Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods (12th-18th centuries). Notoriously neglected and maligned by earlier scholarship, Arabic literature and rhetoric of the 12th-18th centuries is an understudied area of Arabic studies that Thomas Bauer has over the last two decades succeeded in developing and promoting. A tribute to his pioneering work on this field, the contributions highlight the wealth, complexity and importance of Arabic literature and rhetoric of the said period by offering close readings of paradigmatic texts or examining specific topics and trends in larger corpora.

The Literature of the sages /

: The literary creation of the ancient Jewish teachers or Sages--also called rabbinic literature--consists of the teachings of thousands of Sages, many of them anonymous. For a long period, their teachings existed orally, which implied a great deal of flexibility in arrangement and form. Only gradually, as parts of the amorphous oral tradition became fixed, was the literature written down, a process that began in the third century CE and continued into the Middle Ages. Thus the documents of the rabbinic literature are the result of a remarkably long and complex process of creation and editing. This volume gives a careful and succinct analysis both of the content and specific nature of the various documents, and of their textual and literary forms, paying special attention to the continuing discovery and publication of new textual material. The contributors are all engaged in academic teaching and research in Israel. Incorporating ground-breaking developments in research, their essays give a comprehensive presentation published here for the first time.

Handbook of Georgian Literature /

: This Handbook of Georgian Literature is a philological study carried out by contemporary Georgian literary critics. This book traces the pivotal stages in the development of Georgian literature, showcasing not only its unique trajectory but also its deep connections to global literary currents. This study delves into the rich history of Georgian writing, tracing its evolution from the early Middle Ages to contemporary literary movements. Rejecting outdated Soviet methodologies that long skewed the perception of Georgian literature, the book reaffirms the deep-rooted connection between Georgian and European literary traditions. Alongside a sweeping overview, it offers detailed analyses of key periods, authors, and texts, shedding new light on the intellectual heritage of Georgian literature. While many women writers and poets played a significant role in shaping Georgian literature, their work has long been underappreciated in historical narratives. This book corrects that omission, giving these voices the recognition and space they deserve.

Lost in a Sea of Letters : Saʿd al-Dīn Ḥamūya and the Plurality of Sufi Knowledge /

: In Lost in a Sea of Letters , Cyril Uy explores the life and work of Saʿd al-Dīn Ḥamūya (d. 1252), a Mongol-era Sufi whose arcane treatises inspired generations of mystics and messiahs. Reading Ḥamūya in dialogue with contemporaries across Central Asia, Iran, and the Eastern Mediterranean, Uy excavates a world in which knowledge was an embodied sensibility: a way of being that could improvise across all dimensions of human experience. Ḥamūya's performative writing reworked the foundations of this knowledge, provoking readers to live reality through the cacophony of his Sufi free jazz. Foregrounding Ḥamūya's deconstructive ethos and radical openness to interpretation, Uy reveals how embracing plurality could thrive as a mode of social, intellectual, and spiritual competition.
